Penang NGO offers RM20,000 to catch killers of strays
PETALING JAYA : An animal welfare group is offering a RM20,000 reward for information leading to the arrests and prosecution of anyone involved in harming or killing stray cats, dogs and wildlife in Penang.
The information must be 'direct and verifiable', the International Aid for the Protection and Welfare of Animals Penang (IAPWA) said.
'This reward applies to real evidence only, not reposted or viral content, and there is no deadline. Whether the abuse happened recently, including cases at Penang Hill, or in the past, we want to hear from you,' the group said.
The offer comes after Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) lodged a police report on Sunday over the discovery of several dead animals, believed to have been poisoned, at various locations on the hill.
PHC general manager Cheok Lay Leng said the carcasses of seven dogs, three cats and five birds were found over the past few days in open areas and spotted by the public.
'We suspect the main targets are the stray dogs. There have been claims by hikers and visitors in recent weeks that they had been bitten by strays,' he told FMT.
Penang veterinary services department director Dr Saira Banu Rejab said the department is investigating the deaths, having collected samples from the carcasses for analysis and to determine the cause of death.
The deaths are believed to have occurred on July 5.

Usuf also clarified that the case has no connection to singer Shila Amzah, who recently claimed that she was attacked by a senior artiste during a concert rehearsal.

Kelantan open to talks with AIDS council, cops over LGBT event

PETALING JAYA : The Kelantan government has expressed its willingness to meet with police and the Malaysian AIDS Council regarding the recent organisation of a programme related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities in Kota Bharu. Deputy menteri besar Fadzli Hassan said they were seeking to discuss and gain a clearer understanding of the event so the matter can be resolved diplomatically, and to dispel any unfounded allegations. 'Perhaps the mistake was not the organiser's. That's why it needs to be investigated first so that police are not wrongly blamed by the public. 'The police have their job, the AIDS council also has its responsibilities. 'Any programme that goes against the state government's policies and the customs of Kelantan's people is something we simply cannot accept,' Bernama reported him as saying at the Kota Darulnaim Complex today. The programme, which ran from 8pm to 2am, was part of a strategic approach by the health ministry to deliver more inclusive and community-centred HIV treatment services.

Labourer in Kelantan charged with raping teen daughter
The 38-year-old man faces eight to 30 years in prison and at least 10 strokes of the rotan if convicted by the court. PETALING JAYA : A 38-year-old labourer has been charged in the Kota Bharu sessions court with raping his teenage daughter in March. The accused claimed trial after the charge was read to him before judge Zulkifli Abllah, Harian Metro reported. He was charged with raping his 16-year-old daughter in a car at Jalan Pasir Mas-Salor in Kota Bharu at about 4am on March 31. The charge was framed under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which provides for between eight and 30 years in prison and at least 10 strokes of the rotan, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri did not offer bail for the accused, who was unrepresented, saying the charge against him was serious. The court fixed Aug 24 for mention.
