Kelantan open to talks with AIDS council, cops over LGBT event
PETALING JAYA : The Kelantan government has expressed its willingness to meet with police and the Malaysian AIDS Council regarding the recent organisation of a programme related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities in Kota Bharu.
Deputy menteri besar Fadzli Hassan said they were seeking to discuss and gain a clearer understanding of the event so the matter can be resolved diplomatically, and to dispel any unfounded allegations.
'Perhaps the mistake was not the organiser's. That's why it needs to be investigated first so that police are not wrongly blamed by the public.
'The police have their job, the AIDS council also has its responsibilities.
'Any programme that goes against the state government's policies and the customs of Kelantan's people is something we simply cannot accept,' Bernama reported him as saying at the Kota Darulnaim Complex today.
Fadzli said programmes touching on sensitivities, especially when held within village communities, require permission from the relevant authorities such as the Kelantan Islamic religious affairs department, police and others.
He said the state government can also take appropriate action if any event is found to have violated any of its regulations
In mid-June, Kelantan police raided an LGBT-related event involving more than 20 men at a bungalow on Jalan Kemumin in Kota Bharu.
Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat was reported as saying the operation was conducted based on tip-offs and intelligence gathered by a special task force, following complaints.
A search of the premises uncovered hundreds of condoms and several boxes of HIV medication stored in a special room believed to be used as a storage place by the organisers.
The Malaysian AIDS Council said it had conducted an outreach session on June 17 in Kemumin to engage with high-risk communities as part of HIV prevention efforts before the police raid.
The programme, which ran from 8pm to 2am, was part of a strategic approach by the health ministry to deliver more inclusive and community-centred HIV treatment services.

Malaysia secures US tariff cut to 19% after strategic negotiations
KUALA LUMPUR: The United States has agreed to lower tariffs on Malaysian exports from 25% to 19%, marking a diplomatic win for Malaysia after months of negotiations. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz attributed the outcome to Malaysia's firm yet methodical approach in safeguarding national interests. Tengku Zafrul highlighted that Malaysia maintained its stance on critical policies while securing the reduced rate. 'The 19% tariff aligns with regional benchmarks and preserves Malaysia's sovereign right to implement socio-economic policies,' he said. The negotiations, which began on May 6, concluded on July 31, 2025. The minister noted that the agreement reflects six decades of strong Malaysia-US trade relations. 'This result was achieved through sustained bilateral engagement, demonstrating mutual economic benefits,' he added. To mitigate the tariff's impact, Malaysia will leverage its 18 free trade agreements and diversify export markets. 'MITI is coordinating with Bank Negara Malaysia and other agencies to assess GDP effects and support exporters,' Tengku Zafrul said. The government will also advance industrial reforms under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and National Semiconductor Strategy. Amid global economic uncertainties, Malaysia remains resilient. 'While external risks persist, domestic demand and policy reforms position us well,' he said. MITI will conduct outreach programmes to guide businesses on the revised tariff's implementation. - Bernama

Court convicts worker of raping minor in Serian met via app, imposes 15-year jail term, three strokes of the cane
KUCHING, Aug 1 — The Sessions Court here today sentenced a general worker to 15 years in prison and three stokes of the cane for raping a 16-year-old girl. Judge Iris Awen Jon convicted the unrepresented accused on his own guilty plea to a charge of committing physical sexual assault, framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and punishable under Section 14 of the same Act. The court also ordered to undergo rehabilitation and counselling during his imprisonment, and to be placed under police supervision for two years upon his release. The accused committed the offence in a container room for contract workers in Serian between 7pm and 8pm on June 19, 2025. The facts of the case stated that the victim was asleep in the container room when she was approached by the accused, whom she had become acquainted with via a social media app. He then held the victim by the neck and pulled at her shirt until it tore before raping her. The victim reportedly cried out for help but no one heard her, with the accused then threatening to kill her if she continued to scream. He is said to have raped her three times, and during the third incident, several individuals heard her scream and came to her aid, taking her to another room. Acting on a report lodged by the girl, police arrested the accused at a workers' quarters in Miri on July 17. During mitigation, the accused pleaded for leniency on the grounds that he is supporting his stroke-afflicted father and has a three-month-old child. However, deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence, citing public interest, nature of the offence, and frequency of such cases. The DPP also referred the court to a similar case in the Kota Samarahan Sessions Court in 2022 where the court had imposed a jail sentence of 15 years and three strokes of the cane. — The Borneo Post * If you are experiencing sexual violence, the following hotlines offer free and confidential support: Talian Kasih at 15999 or WhatsApp 019-2615999 (24/7); All Women's Action Society at 016-2374221/016-2284221 (9.30am-5.30pm); and Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) at 03-30008858 or SMS/WhatsApp TINA 018-9888058 (24/7)
