In German, there is a word, verschlimmbessern. It is used to describe an intended improvement that turns out to have the opposite effect. Airbags were invented to save lives, but they explode with such force that they sometimes kill. Cane toads were introduced into Queensland to cut down on harmful pesticides, and whoops, an irreversible ecological plague.
There is no greater example of musical verschlimmbessern than that of the concept album – vaguely defined as a record designed around a central narrative, a unifying theme or a particular artistic device. The definition may be hazy, but the very whiff of it sends music critics into fits of schwärmerei (German for 'unbridled and excessive enthusiasm').
The intention is to elevate an LP into a literary work of art, and the artist into a mythical genius. Yet more often than not, the 'concept' serves only to confuse and complicate, resulting in a record that succeeds neither as a collection of songs nor a cohesive piece of storytelling – a half-built ship with a fancy paint job, lost in a desolate sea of compromised ideas.
The concept album emerged in the 1960s, with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles and its like, and it endures to this day. The Waterboys just released Life, Death and Dennis Hopper, inspired by the Hollywood icon, and Car Seat Headrest will release The Scholars in early May, told from the perspective of various students at a fictional college.
It's an exciting idea. Taking a listener on a sonic journey, immersing them in an experience that is both cinematic and enthralling. Occasionally, it works: Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d city, for example, transports us to one particularly wild day in the Compton of Kendrick's childhood, explores characters with depth and provides narrative payoff to those who listen from start to finish. The result is the greatest album of the 21st century.
But make no mistake: this is the exception, not the rule. Almost always, a concept album (no matter how good the concept might be on paper) quickly devolves into a conceited exercise in ego and forced-together puzzle pieces. Whether the artist is trying to tell an overarching story, write songs from different perspectives, or experiment with the form itself, it's nearly impossible to pull off.
Some concept albums try to reinvent the wheel, and find themselves buried beneath their ambition, with the gimmick swamping the songs themselves. Commercial Album by the Residents consists of 40 songs, all one minute long. It's a fun idea, but it runs out of juice quickly, becoming tedious and distracting. The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands sees the Turtles pretend to be 12 bands across 12 songs of wildly different genres, including country, psychedelia, surf rock, pop and R&B – a baffling listening experience.
Far worse is the narrative-driven concept album. If, when you look up a recipe online, your favourite part is the long, needlessly complicated story serving no purpose and obscuring the actual food, then concept albums are for you!

Priscilla Presley's former business partners have sensationally accused her of pulling her daughter Lisa Marie Presley's life-support in a bid to get control of her family name, according to a bombshell new lawsuit. Lisa Marie, the daughter of Priscilla and late rock and roll legend Elvis Presley, died in Jan. 2023 after she went into cardiac arrest in her California home. She was 54. According to documents obtained by The Post, Brigitte Kruse and Kevin Fialko, the heads of Priscilla Presley Partners, claim the 80-year-old 'ultimately wanted to control' her daughter's trust and Graceland — the iconic Memphis mansion that once belonged to the legendary crooner. Kruse and Fialko are suing Priscilla, who was married to Elvis from 1967 to 1973, for breach of contract and fraud. They are seeking at least $50 million. Priscilla is accused of being aware that Lisa Marie was preparing to remove her as the sole head of her trust and 'pulled the plug within hours of Lisa being admitted' to the hospital. 'Priscilla knew that Lisa's death neutralised the threat of Lisa's efforts to have Priscilla removed as the sole trustee of Lisa's irrevocable life insurance trust, and Priscilla ultimately wanted to control the Promenade Trust and Graceland,' the lawsuit alleges. 'At her house the following week, Priscilla allegedly exclaimed, 'I'm the queen. I'm in charge of Graceland.'' In response, Priscilla's lawyer, Marty Singer, slammed the filing as 'one of the most shameful, ridiculous, salacious, and meritless' lawsuits he had ever seen. 'This is nothing more than a sad and vicious attempt to falsely tarnish the reputation of an eighty-year-old woman in blatant retaliation for bringing a lawsuit to redress the wrongful conduct of Brigitte Kruse, Kevin Fialko, and their co-conspirators,' Singer told The Post in a statement. 'Accusing a grieving mother of contributing to her daughter's death is not savvy advocacy; it is malicious character assassination, and should be broadly condemned. These fabricated claims have absolutely no validity and we are confident this case will be dismissed,' Singer added. Last year, Priscilla filed a lawsuit claiming she was a victim of financial abuse — alleging that Kruse, among others, took advantage her and stole $1 million. After Priscilla and the Hound Dog crooner parted ways in 1973, the lawsuit claims 'she was supposed to stop using the surname 'Presley'' per the divorce agreement. Years after Elvis' death, Lisa Marie — his only child — came into her inheritance in 1993. The lawsuit notes that the estate was valued at around $100 million at the time. The suit further alleges that Priscilla filed a petition to challenge a 2016 amendment to the trust following Lisa Marie's death. At the time, the trust had removed Priscilla as a trustee and instead listed Lisa Marie's daughter, Riley Keough, and son Benjamin Keough, who died in 2020, as co-trustees. In 2023, following her mother's untimely death, the Daisy Jones and the Six actress, 36, was granted sole ownership of the estate following a lengthy legal dispute with Priscilla. In the lead-up to her death, Lisa Marie had a 'tumultuous and tenuous' relationship with her mum, with the legendary crooner's daughter even 'threatening to sue' Priscilla over the trust dispute, Kruse and Fialko allege in their filing. The duo claims that they 'worked to keep the family together.' An official autopsy report noted that there was 'no evidence of injury or foul play' in her death, adding that the 'manner of death is deemed natural.' 'The obstruction was in the form of a strangulated small bowel caused by adhesions that developed after bariatric surgery years ago,' the LA County medical examiner said at the time. 'This is a known long-term complication of this type of surgery.' Kruse and Fialko further alleged that Priscilla didn't adhere to her daughter's wishes of having her life 'prolonged as long as possible within the limits of generally accepted health care standards.' Elsewhere in the filing, the duo said they brokered a deal with Keough on behalf of Priscilla. They said the deal gave Priscilla a $2.4 million payout and 'a seven-figure deal for Priscilla's son, Navarone.' 'The evidence will establish that the real victims here are my clients, who invested millions and years of hard work into revitalising Priscilla Presley's brand, only to be betrayed and falsely accused once the money was on the table and every personal and business issue had been resolved,' Jordan Matthews, an lawyer for Kruse and Fialko, said in a statement. The 54-year-old only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley died suddenly on Jan. 12, 2023, hours after she was hospitalised in critical condition after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest at her Calabasas home. She was in an induced coma and on life support with a temporary pacemaker. Lisa Marie shared her daughter Riley, 36, and her late son Benjamin, with Danny Keough. She was married to Keough from 1988 to 1994. The late singer shared her 16-year-old twins, Finley and Harper, with ex-husband Michael Lockwood. The pair were married for a decade after tying the knot in 2006.

Anna 'Delvey' Sorokin says she has received hundreds of death threats since she was accused of dumping pet rabbits she posed with for a photo shoot in a New York City park. Sorokin, the fake German heiress who stole tens of thousands of dollars from banks, posed alongside three bunnies on the streets of Manhattan's posh Tribeca neighborhood last week. The bunnies were recognised and discovered in Brooklyn's Prospect Park days later, prompting fierce online backlash. But the headline-making New York City socialite — who vehemently denied responsibility for the discarded bunnies — said she's particularly shocked by the strong reaction to the incident. 'It just seems to me like everything I do is just wrong,' Sorokin said. 'I can never do right by these people.' Sorokin shared screenshots of dozens of hateful messages she has received within the last few days to her Instagram account — which she called 'unusable'. Some of them suggest that she should be killed or take her own life, including one that advises her to get someone to 'make a carpet out of your skin'. 'It seems like a lot of these people, just because they're engaged in animal rescue, they feel like they're entitled to insult you or talk to you or say anything because they're hiding behind this thing that they're doing,' she said. Sorokin, 34, whose life was depicted in Netflix's hit 2022 series Inventing Anna, took the photos with the bunnies on August 3 to create content for Instagram, where she has more than 1.1 million followers. Shortly before the shoot, Sorokin asked whether any of her followers in the New York City metropolitan area had a pet rabbit she could borrow, she said. Christian Batty, 19, a hairstylist Sorokin met briefly last year, reached out and offered what he described as a friend's rabbits, she said. Sorokin added that she paid Batty to provide the rabbits and for his Uber ride to return the rabbits to their owner in Yonkers — or so she thought. A screenshot of an Uber receipt Sorokin shared with NBC News shows the ride's drop-off location was just south of Prospect Park, where the rabbits were later spotted. Days later, she said, she started receiving messages on social media about the rabbits' being spotted in Prospect Park. A Facebook user posted images of the domesticated bunnies in the park to a public Facebook group dedicated to rabbits, House Rabbit Society, and other users connected them to Sorokin's photos. Sorokin initially thought the posts were fake, but the flood of messages did not stop. At first, Batty denied having dumped the rabbits, according to screenshots of text messages between Sorokin, Batty and photographer Jasper Soloff. Sorokin posted those messages on her Instagram story. 'Jasper had no knowledge or input as to how the bunnies were obtained or what happened to them after the photo shoot,' Soloff's attorney, Gary Adelman, said in a statement. Batty did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Hours later, Batty said, he did dump the rabbits, and he absolved Sorokin of any involvement, according to a statement on his Instagram account, which has since been taken down. 'When I realised the rabbits were being surrendered to me, I panicked,' Batty said in the statement, screenshots of which Sorokin provided. 'At 19, with no experience caring for animals, no pet-friendly housing, and no knowledge of available resources, I felt overwhelmed and made the worst possible choice.' 'Believing, mistakenly, that there were existing rabbits in that area, I released them there, thinking that was my best option,' he added. Sorokin pushed back against the notion that Batty's age was an issue. 'He's old enough to move to New York and live on his own. He should have enough common sense to handle rabbits,' she said. 'We're not, like, asking him to do anything that requires high IQ from him.' Sorokin said she was concerned about how the incident might affect her pending immigration case. A Manhattan jury convicted Sorokin in April 2019 on four counts of theft services, three counts of grand larceny and one count of attempted grand larceny after she was accused of defrauding banks and friends of tens of thousands of dollars. Prosecutors said she persuaded friends and businesses to lend her money to afford a lavish lifestyle under the guise that she was the daughter of an oil baron or a diplomat worth tens of millions of dollars. In 2021, Sorokin was released on parole, and she is fighting deportation. She has been required to wear an electronic ankle monitor and cannot leave a 120km house arrest radius based in New York. 'This time, I've done nothing wrong,' she said. 'And I had the best intentions, and it's really frustrating.' The New York Times reported that the rabbits were rescued by blogger Terry Chao, who spotted them in the park. Chao could not immediately be reached for comment. Sorokin said she donated $1000 to All About Rabbits Rescue in the aftermath of the scandal. She also denied harming the rabbits by putting them on leashes, as some have suggested online. 'I don't know, I'm not a bunny professional. I didn't know the leashes were such a big deal,' she said. 'We would put them down for, I don't know, a minute or two, take a picture and pick them up. We were not walking them by any means. And they seemed to be happy.'
