Ludhiana: Weeks on, government school students without books
Nearly a month into the new academic session, students at government schools are still waiting for their textbooks. Despite a requirement of nearly 21 lakh books, only around 15 lakhs have been made available so far, leaving many children without essential learning material.
Teachers and principals have raised the alarm, fearing the delay may affect student learning, classroom progress and even enrollments.
Jagjit Singh Mann, district president of the Government Teachers' Union (GTU), said, 'There are still entire subjects for which books haven't arrived. Teachers keep making repeated rounds to get the books. This should be sorted at the start of the session with block-wise counts.'
Charanjeet Kaur Ahuja, principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Cemetery Road, said Class 1 students had got only one subject's book so far. A teacher from School of Eminence, Model Town, also pointed out that Punjabi textbooks for senior secondary classes are yet to reach schools.
Although some schools maintain book banks, teachers say these are no longer enough. 'Students expect fresh books at the start of the year. But many pass-outs don't return their books, affecting studies,' said a teacher.
Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) superintendent Manish Kumar said 14.5 lakh books had been distributed and the pending books would reach the schools by the end of May. Regarding the delay, he said the books were earlier sent to Khanna and then brought to Ludhiana before being distributed. 'Now, the system has changed. Books are stored directly in Ludhiana and then delivered to different blocks,' he said.
According to officials, the delay in distribution was triggered by a dispute between the Punjabi Sahit Akademi and the PSEB over rental terms and maintenance of the board's regional office at Punjabi Bhawan. Due to this, books were earlier stored at a government senior secondary school in Khanna. The issue has been resolved, and the books are now arriving at Punjabi Bhawan, officials added.

‘Look at PM's love for Punjab, despite losing poll, I was made minister': Ravneet Bittu
Urging people of Ludhiana to vote for 'Viksit Bharat, Viksit Punjab, Viksit Ludhiana, Viksit West', Union Minister of State and senior BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu said Sunday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'love for Punjab can be gauged from the fact that even as he (Bittu) lost the election from Ludhiana, he was made the Union minister'. 'The only aim of BJP-led Central government is to develop the entire nation. For Punjab, a beginning in this direction can be made from Ludhiana. Look at PM Modi's love for Punjab. Even as I lost the Lok Sabha election from Ludhiana last year, he made me a Union minister. He did so because he wanted a Punjabi in his Cabinet who can work for Punjab's development. Earlier also there were Sikh faces in his Cabinet such as Hardeep Singh Puri but he wanted someone from Punjab. I urge people of Ludhiana to vote for BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta if they want that Ludhiana should be developed,' said Bittu, addressing a press conference. 'He has not just made me a minister but given extremely important portfolio like Railways. Recently, we opened Chenab Bridge worth Rs 43,000 crore in the border state of Jammu & Kashmir. Punjab is also a border state which deserves such huge projects. The only way to get them is to have BJP in power in Punjab. Otherwise, other states have already raced ahead of us,' said Bittu. Referring to the PM's security breach incident in Punjab in 2022, Bittu targeted the then CM and Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi. 'Why did Channi keep hiding in the US for one and a half year if he was so right? It is only because of his poor administration that PM Modi, who was scheduled to announce multi-crore projects for Punjab that day, returned without doing so,' said Bittu. Attacking the AAP-led Punjab government for 'widespread corruption' in the state, Bittu said: 'Recently, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation's superintendent engineer Sanjay Kanwar, who was arrested for corruption, has told vigilance in his statement that he used to give shares from the bribe amount to the incumbent MC commissioner and also his predecessors. Which corruption-free governance does Bhagwant Mann talk about?' Bittu alleged that AAP's own local MLAs from Ludhiana were not supporting the candidature of Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora from Ludhiana West. He cited Mann's recent acknowledgement that 'a Cabinet berth for Arora was not guaranteed'. 'The AAP's only objective behind fielding Arora appears to be the facilitation of Arvind Kejriwal's entry into the Rajya Sabha,' said Bittu. He said similarly, in the Congress, 'party's state president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring was not allowed entry in the West constituency and he is not campaigning for their candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu.' 'Warring goes in some other constituency, addresses workers and gets photos clicked. He is not allowed to enter the West where election is happening,' said Bittu. Bittu appealed to the electorate to cast their votes in favour of the BJP, and not to 'waste their votes on AAP and Congress'. Bittu also launched a scathing attack on CM Mann, alleging a 'profligate expenditure on a five-star hotel stay in Ludhiana during his campaign for the AAP candidate'. Meanwhile, BJP's senior leadership, including national general secretary Tarun Chugh and Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, too campaigned in Rishi Nagar. Chugh said that people should not consider this bypoll as a formality because it will help them lay foundation for the next Assembly elections in 2027. Sirsa said that people from Delhi voted out AAP and now they are sitting in Punjab to loot all the resources of this state. He said people in Punjab should give a befitting reply to the ruling party and send them from here as well because only then they can save their state.

Ludhiana: If I can influence VB, Mann should resign, says Ashu
Continuing with his attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, Punjab Congress working president Bharat Bhushan Ashu on Saturday said that if his writ really runs in the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), 'chief minister Bhagwant Mann does not deserve to hold his position even for a day as this means he has lost the confidence of and control over his government and departments'. Asked about his reaction over AAP leaders repeatedly claiming that he had himself got the summons issued from the Ludhiana VB SSP to gain sympathy, Ashu retorted, 'If that is really true, then don't you think Bhagwant Mann, who is the chief minister and heads the home and vigilance departments, deserves to resign as he has no control over his own departments?' 'The AAP is completely frustrated and panic stricken as it has started feeling the ground slipping out from beneath their feet. Right now, the AAP candidate is at the third place and you never know his fortunes may dip further to the fourth place,' he said while claiming that the AAP candidate had confided it to his close aides that he had taken an unnecessary plunge into electoral politics. To a question that CM Mann had justified the appointment of outsiders at various positions in the Punjab government by saying that talented people from one place can be posted at other places, Ashu asked, 'Tell us whether there has ever been any appointment of any Punjabi from Punjab in Delhi during over a decade of AAP rule there.' 'Their only aim and purpose today is to loot and rob as much as they can, knowing well that their time is up and over,' he observed, while adding, 'but let it be clear to them that they will be held to account for each and every penny they looted and robbed from Punjab'. 'You implicated people like me in false cases. Just remember the cycle of justice does take full turn and everybody will be held accountable,' he told the AAP government. Asked to comment about the AAP and the BJP candidates, Ashu said, 'It is for the people of Ludhiana to decide and judge and I leave it to their judgement by presenting my case in front of them. In a democracy, everyone has the right to put up and present his case in the people's court and let the people decide.'

Haryana: Chargesheet filed against Goldy Brar, 4 others in Gurugram grenade attacks case
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed charges in court against Canada-based gangster-terrorist Satwinder Singh alias Goldy Brar and four others for orchestrating grenade attacks on two Gurugram clubs in December, the agency announced on Saturday. The December 10, 2024 attacks targeted Warehouse Club and Human Club in Sector 29, with investigators linking the violence to a broader conspiracy by the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) to spread communal disharmony across Haryana. The chargesheet names Sachin Taliyan, Ankit, Bhawish and US-based Randeep Singh alongside Brar. All accused except Brar and Randeep Singh have been arrested. The NIA investigations revealed that Brar, a designated terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, masterminded the conspiracy from his base in Brampton, Canada. The agency said the terror syndicate actively extorts money, raises funds, procures explosives and weapons, and intimidates civilians to threaten national security. Brar, a close associate of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, faces multiple terror cases. The NIA has already charge-sheeted him for the December 2023 murder of Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi, president of the Hindu right-wing Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena, in Jaipur. He is also wanted for orchestrating the May 29, 2022 assassination of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Brar was designated a terrorist under UAPA in January 2024. From Canada, Brar allegedly supervises Bishnoi gang operations whilst assisting pro-Khalistan outfits including BKI in weapons smuggling, drug trafficking and targeted killings, the agency stated. How Ggm blasts are linked to Chandigarh A web of inter-state criminal links has emerged in the investigation into the Gurugram bar blasts, with UT police uncovering key connections to Chandigarh and Haryana's Hisar district. Two accused, Ajit and Vinay, played a direct role in the attacks carried out at two popular Sector 26 bars, acting on the instructions of gangster Randeep Malik. Ajit and Vinay, both Hisar natives, had allegedly delivered a bomb to a person for the Gurugram blasts and were arrested by Chandigarh police after a brief encounter in Hisar on November 29 last year. The duo was involved in hurling bombs at Seville Bar Lounge—owned by rapper Badshah—and De'Orra Dance Bar in Sector 26, Chandigarh, between 3:15am and 3:30am on November 26. Investigations revealed that gangster Randeep Malik, a Jind native now based in the USA, orchestrated the blasts. Malik directed the accused to collect explosives in Karnal and a pistol from Sahil, a murder accused lodged in Jind jail. The handover took place near Rohtak. According to Chandigarh police, Malik, previously booked in 2011 for assault and intimidation, recruits youth from Hisar and Bhiwani into crime. He advised the accused to turn off their phones and escape to Hisar and then Rajasthan after the blasts in Chandigarh. Malik coordinated the attack with gangster Goldy Brar, whose approval allegedly preceded the blasts, the cops said.
