Three high-profile cases, including Siti Bainun and Tun M, to be heard this week
KUALA LUMPUR: Three high-profile court cases involving prominent national figures are set to be heard starting tomorrow.
Among them is the final appeal of Rumah Bonda founder Siti Bainun Ahd Razali at the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya, where she is challenging her 12-year prison sentence for the neglect and abuse of a teenage girl with Down syndrome, known as Bella.
Siti Bainun, 32, is appealing to overturn the conviction and sentence upheld by the High Court. The appeal is scheduled to be heard by a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeal.
She was previously sentenced to 12 years in prison by the High Court on two charges of neglecting and abusing 13-year-old Bella three years ago.
On May 2, last year, the High Court dismissed her appeal, and she is now challenging that decision at the Court of Appeal.
At the Kuala Lumpur High Court, committal proceedings against former Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil will continue this Wednesday.
The Attorney-General is seeking a jail sentence or fine for Isham over alleged contempt of court concerning his comments on Datuk Seri Najib Razak's 1MDB case.
Meanwhile, the Kuala Lumpur High Court will also hear committal proceedings against former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, filed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi over alleged contempt of court in a defamation suit involving the issue of the term "Kutty."

NACCOL offers 100 subsidised sacrificial cows to Permatang Pauh residents
BUKIT MERTAJAM: The National Action Council on Cost of Living (NACCOL) has distributed 100 cows at half of the market price to ease the financial burden of Permatang Pauh constituents performing the sacrificial ritual in conjunction with Aidiladha this Saturday. Senior political secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, said NACCOL has taken the initiative to provide each cow weighing 220 kg or more. "Through this special programme, each cow is sold at RM2,800, with individual portions priced at RM399. For a start, it is being offered exclusively to the Permatang Pauh constituents, in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's intention to ensure that the underprivileged can perform the sacrificial rite. "Although Permatang Pauh is not the Prime Minister's parliamentary constituency, he feels a strong connection to this area. That is why he wants to help ease the burden of the people here and allow them to carry out the ritual at an affordable price," he told reporters after the ceremony to distribute the sacrificial cows at the Taman Arowana night market site today. Under the programme, 40 areas, including mosques and surau, as well as members of non-governmental organisations and staff of government agencies in the constituency, received the cows that they had purchased. Shamsul Iskandar noted that the initiative did not involve any government subsidies, as NACCOL purchased the cattle directly from farms in large quantities. He said the sacrificial cows were obtained through collaboration with the Johor State Farmers' Organisation and Johor Plantations Group, adding that the initiative will be expanded to other parliamentary constituencies next year. "For example, the congregation of Masjid Kubang Ulu in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency purchased 17 cows. The total would have reached RM95,000, but through this initiative, they only paid RM47,000, savings of nearly 50 per cent," he added. - BERNAMA

PM files appeal notice against decision on legal questions referral

Anwar's lawyer, Datuk Seri K. Rajasegaran, when contacted, confirmed the filing of the notice by Messrs Zain Megat & Murad. Advertisement 'The notice of appeal was filed immediately after the proceedings ended yesterday. We hope to secure a hearing date before June 16,' he said. Yesterday, High Court judge Roz Mawar Rozain dismissed Anwar's bid to refer the eight legal questions after finding that none of the articles of a Federal Constitution (FC) cited by Anwar's legal team give rise to any real, substantial or justiciable question of constitutional law requiring determination by the Federal Court under Article 128(2) of the FC or Section 84 of Courts of Judicature Act 1964. On May 23, the Prime Minister filed the application to refer the eight legal questions, which also include whether, under Articles 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution, a sitting Prime Minister enjoys limited immunity from lawsuits concerning allegations of personal conduct that occurred before his appointment. The legal questions relate to a lawsuit filed by Anwar's former research assistant, Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, concerning an alleged sexual assault seven years ago. However, the Attorney General's Chambers on Jan 14, 2020, announced that it would not pursue the matter further, citing insufficient evidence and contradictions of material facts that could not support the prosecution of any person under Section 354 of the Penal Code.
