PM files appeal notice against decision on legal questions referral

By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ( pic ) has filed a notice of appeal against the High Court's decision to dismiss his application to refer eight legal questions to the Federal Court, including whether a sitting Prime Minister enjoys immunity from civil lawsuits. Anwar's lawyer, Datuk Seri K. Rajasegaran, when contacted, confirmed the filing of the notice by Messrs Zain Megat & Murad.
Advertisement 'The notice of appeal was filed immediately after the proceedings ended yesterday. We hope to secure a hearing date before June 16,' he said. Yesterday, High Court judge Roz Mawar Rozain dismissed Anwar's bid to refer the eight legal questions after finding that none of the articles of a Federal Constitution (FC) cited by Anwar's legal team give rise to any real, substantial or justiciable question of constitutional law requiring determination by the Federal Court under Article 128(2) of the FC or Section 84 of Courts of Judicature Act 1964. On May 23, the Prime Minister filed the application to refer the eight legal questions, which also include whether, under Articles 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution, a sitting Prime Minister enjoys limited immunity from lawsuits concerning allegations of personal conduct that occurred before his appointment. The legal questions relate to a lawsuit filed by Anwar's former research assistant, Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, concerning an alleged sexual assault seven years ago. However, the Attorney General's Chambers on Jan 14, 2020, announced that it would not pursue the matter further, citing insufficient evidence and contradictions of material facts that could not support the prosecution of any person under Section 354 of the Penal Code. PETRONAS had previously stated that it needs to right-size its workforce to ensure the company's sustainability in the decades to come. It has nearly 50,000 employees, according to its website. Separately, Anwar said he would contact his Thai counterpart, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, regarding the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia. Anwar said that as the Asean Chair, Malaysia took note of the developments in both countries. 'We will issue a statement (on the outcome of the discussion with Paetongtarn) later,' he told reporters. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops were involved in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, which resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice. Thailand, meanwhile, has reportedly reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully in accordance with international law, as well as existing agreements and memoranda with Cambodia. Earlier, Anwar received a courtesy call from the new Malaysian Ambassador to the United States, Tan Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob. Anwar said that they discussed, among others, measures to strengthen bilateral ties between Malaysia and the United States, including strategic efforts to attract quality and high-impact foreign investments. 'Among (the topics) touched on included strengthening Malaysia-US ties as well as efforts to attract quality and high-impact foreign investments from the country,' he said in a Facebook post today. The Prime Minister also wished Muhammad Shahrul all the best on his appointment, while stating his confidence in the former to elevate Malaysia's aspirations, image and reputation to the highest level. On June 3, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, presented the instrument of appointment to Muhammad Shahrul in a ceremony at Istana Negara.

Malaysia to continue diplomatic efforts for Palestinian cause

Malaysia ready to facilitate Cambodia-Thailand border talks
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is ready to help facilitate peaceful negotiations between Cambodia and Thailand over their ongoing border dispute, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. Anwar said he had spoken with both Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who informed him that their respective governments had agreed to hold talks on June 14 regarding the issue.
