Real-world evidence study uses SnapshotNIR on 4,000+ wounds to deliver targeted care and improve wound healing outcomes

CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA, July 7, 2025 / EINPresswire.com / -- Kent Imaging, a leader in near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) medical imaging, is proud to share the publication in the Journal of Wound Care titled 'Utilization of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) in Post-Acute Care: Analysis of Real-World Clinical Decision Making.' This is a pioneering study reporting real-world evidence of a data set of 19,192 wounds from 6,147 patients in post-acute care.
The study provided the most comprehensive real-world evaluation of SnapshotNIR, analyzing its clinical application across 35% of the dataset, in 2,165 patients, and 4,060 wounds. The data highlighted how numerous providers, across 22 states of the US, selectively deployed SnapshotNIR in cases of clinical complexity, particularly when conventional wound care approaches had plateaued.
SnapshotNIR directly impacted clinician's care plans for the imaged wounds including determining a wound goal as maintenance (20.76%), noting a wound goal as healable (17.39%), identifying the need for additional studies (11.60%), determining a wound goal as palliative (5.22%), and directing hospice referral (0.76%).
The study found that providers used SnapshotNIR for care plan evaluation (92.98%), tissue oxygenation trending (66.65%), evaluation of the necessity and effectiveness of debridement (29.16%), and microcirculation or vascular referral assessment (8.89%). The NIRS-imaged group included patients with non-healing wounds, systemic disease burden, and vascular risk factors—populations in whom diagnostic uncertainty is high, and healing trajectories are difficult to predict.

The study's results validated the targeted use of SnapshotNIR in a diverse patient population. It demonstrated healing rates of 36.5% for pressure ulcers, 38.15% for lower extremity wounds, and 39.68% for all wounds, compared to the previously published healing rate of 22.5% for the same practice when using standard of care. It represented an improvement of 62%–76% in healing rates compared to the previously published rate.

Half of requests for complex dental work are being rejected under national insurance plan
As federal dental care expands to cover most uninsured Canadians, providers say some procedures are being bogged down by paperwork and processing delays. Health Canada says 52 per cent of requests for pre-authorized dental work between November 2024 and June 2025 have been rejected. While the vast majority of claims don't need pre-authorization, it's required for more complex and often more expensive procedures, like crowns or partial dentures. Clinics must submit extra documentation like X-rays and dental charts to show the work is medically necessary before it can be covered and completed. "There's been a lot of confusion for dentists who send in what we would normally send in to a private plan, and it comes back rejected," said Dr. Bruce Ward, a Vancouver dentist and president of the Canadian Dental Association. "It's a much, much, much higher rejection rate than private plans." The multibillion-dollar Canadian Dental Care Plan helps cover the cost of dental work for Canadian residents with a family income below $90,000 who don't have access to private insurance. The program fully expanded to cover people aged 18 to 64 last month. Health Canada says 5.2 million people have been approved for coverage so far, but only about half — 2.2 million — have received care. And some new patients are getting an unexpected bill, while certain parts of the country are struggling to keep up with a huge influx of appointments, Ward said. Still, providers told CBC News the program is providing Canadians much-needed access to care — and that issues with the program are improving. Clinics submit the pre-authorizations through Sun Life, the insurance provider that the federal government contracted to run the program. Dental offices are sometimes waiting weeks or months for a response, only to be told Sun Life needs additional documentation — further slowing down the process, Ward said. "A lot of people have been waiting for crowns to be pre-authorized," Ward said. "There was an avalanche of approvals that got sent in." Health Canada said rejections and delays in pre-authorizations are caused by several factors, including an unexpected high volume of submissions that were missing information. Oral health-care providers also tell CBC News there were many technical issues with the submission software that have since been largely resolved. Health Canada has worked to streamline the process and educate providers about how to complete the applications, a spokesperson said. Eighty per cent of the pre-authorizations are now being processed within seven business days. And more than 90 per cent of the claims, like basic cleanings or fillings, don't require pre-authorization. But Donna Wells, manager of professional practice at the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association, said the program needs to better cover preventive care. The plan currently allots one hour of scaling per year for adults. Teenagers get just 15 minutes of scaling. "These are patients who have not had oral health care, in some cases, for a number of years, because it's been such a financial barrier for them," Wells said. She said pre-authorization applications for additional scaling are being rejected en masse. Health Canada says over a million Canadians signed on to the program when it expanded in June, and 94,980 of them received dental care. But that influx of patients has led to a backlog in some parts of the country, like Atlantic Canada."This program is wonderful, but it's putting a strain on providers," said Natalie Marsh, a dental assistant in North Sydney, N.S., and vice-president of the Canadian Dental Assistants Association. She said her clinic is already booking appointments for spring 2026. "You're seeing people who haven't seen a dentist in a long time. So they're coming in with a lot of work to be done," she said. Providers said patients continue to be under the impression their dental work will be free of charge. But the program reimburses clinics at a rate lower than provincial fee guides, which they often use to set their rates. That means dental offices can "balance bill," charging the difference between the price of the procedure and what Ottawa will pay them. "I just had somebody in my office a couple of weeks ago who was very upset, because they'd been told that they were covered 100 per cent," Ward said. Ward said patients, including seniors, should remember they need to reapply every year. Despite those challenges, Ward said overall he's found the dental care plan to be "very good" to work with. That sentiment is echoed by other oral health associations. "It's been a huge boon to a lot of people who frankly would never have been able to afford to have their mouths taken care of," Ward said. "It's remarkable," he said. "And yes, there's going to be some growing pains."

If You're Not Doing This One Thing, You May Not Be Pooping Correctly
Among the current wave of wellness obsessions, fibermaxxing is gaining major traction. This more-is-more approach to fiber is touted on TikTok as a way to boost digestion, satiety and overall gut health while also addressing the fact that most Americans aren't getting enough. But while increasing your fiber intake has clear benefits, nutrition experts say there's a right way to do it if you want to see results. Related: What is fibermaxxing? The TikTok trend is all about maximizing fiber intake by loading up every meal and snack with fiber-rich foods, and sometimes supplements, to support gut health, satiety, cholesterol levels, blood sugar stability and even cancer prevention. It reflects a growing shift away from protein-obsessed diets toward a stronger focus on digestive and colon health. But Jennifer House, a registered dietitian and owner of First Step Nutrition in Calgary, Alberta, cautions that if you have IBS or an inflammatory bowel condition like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, a high-fiber diet might not be ideal. 'And if you suffer from constipation, increasing fiber all at once could temporarily make the situation worse.' How much fiber do we actually need? Related: For women ages 18 to 50, the general recommendation is 25 grams of fiber per day, and 21 grams for those 51 and older, House said. For men, it's 30 grams daily. 'Most people only get about half of the recommended amount of fiber each day,' she added. Fiber is found only in plant-based foods, and there are five main groups that provide it: vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, and nuts and seeds. Of these, legumes pack the biggest punch. Just one cup of beans contains 10 to 19 grams of fiber, which can get you more than halfway to your daily target. 'Animal foods don't contain fiber, so an eating pattern that's disproportionately high in meat, dairy and eggs is more likely to fall short on fiber,' said registered dietitian Avery Zenker. The health benefits of fiber: Related: Fiber supports healthy digestion, helps regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and promotes a sense of fullness that can aid in appetite and weight management. It's also linked to a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers, including colorectal and colon, Zenker noted. 'Low fiber diets are linked to microbiome imbalances and lower microbial diversity, both of which are associated with increased risk of inflammatory diseases.' Different types of fiber offer different benefits. 'Soluble fiber helps regulate blood sugar and lower cholesterol — great for patients with diabetes or heart disease risk,' said Dr. Michael Ednie, founder of Bespoke Concierge MD based in Scottsdale, Arizona. This type of fiber dissolves in water to form a gel that helps lower cholesterol and regulate blood sugar. 'Insoluble fiber promotes regularity and helps prevent constipation, which is crucial for colon health,' Ednie said. Then there's prebiotic fiber, which serves as food for the beneficial bacteria in your gut. 'As those bacteria ferment prebiotic fibers, they produce short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which have anti-inflammatory effects and support gut barrier function. Prebiotics have also been linked to improved mineral absorption and even mood regulation via the gut-brain connection,' Ednie said. Garlic, onions, bananas and asparagus are all excellent sources. Just like variety in your overall diet supports better nutrition, eating different types of fiber helps build a healthier, more resilient gut microbiome. 'Different fibers feed different strains of beneficial bacteria, which leads to better gut health, stronger immune function and lower inflammation overall,' Ednie explained. While there's no strict formula for how much of each fiber type you need, he suggests aiming for about two-thirds insoluble fiber and one-third soluble fiber. Fibermaxxing can backfire on your digestive system. While there's no official upper limit for fiber intake, increasing it too quickly can cause gas, bloating and other digestive issues like cramping, constipation and diarrhea. 'The gut bacteria essentially go into overdrive trying to process the sudden influx of fiber, producing excess gas as a byproduct,' Ednie explained. 'In rare cases, if someone dramatically increases fiber without proper hydration or pacing, it can even lead to intestinal blockages that require medical attention.' The type of fiber you're increasing also affects the symptoms you may experience. 'Soluble fiber — found in foods like oats, apples and beans — tends to be gentler at first but often causes more gas because it's fermented by gut bacteria,' Ednie said. 'Insoluble fiber — from whole grains, vegetable skins and nuts — adds bulk and moves things along but can lead to more bloating and cramping if increased too quickly without enough water.' Zenker also notes that for some people, especially older adults and young children, the satiating effect of fiber may reduce overall food intake, potentially leading to unintended weight loss or nutrient gaps. Additionally, consuming too much fiber can interfere with the absorption of important minerals like iron, zinc and calcium by binding to them in the gut and preventing their absorption. Increasing your fluid intake is key. Related: Hydration is essential when increasing fiber intake to help it do its job effectively. 'Soluble fiber needs water to form the gel that helps regulate blood sugar and cholesterol,' Ednie explained. 'Insoluble fiber needs water to add bulk and move stool efficiently through the digestive tract.' He recommends aiming for at least eight to 10 cups of water a day when boosting your fiber intake, and more if you're active or in a hot climate, and pairing every fiber-rich meal or snack with a full glass of water to support digestion. How to safely increase your fiber intake. Nutrition experts agree that it's important to increase fiber gradually to give your digestive system time to adjust and minimize the risk of bloating or discomfort. 'Instead of jumping from 10 grams a day to 30 overnight, add just 3 to 5 grams of fiber per week,' Ednie said. He also recommends spreading your fiber intake throughout the day, like enjoying oatmeal with berries in the morning, veggies or legumes at lunch and dinner, and snacks like fruit with nuts or popcorn in between. 'Consistency makes it much easier for the body to adapt and helps create sustainable habits that support long-term gut health,' he added. Ednie also emphasizes prioritizing whole foods as your main fiber source to support digestive, metabolic and cardiovascular health. These foods naturally contain a mix of soluble and insoluble fiber, along with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that fiber supplements don't offer. 'He wants to live in this world': Edmonton paramedic's infant son in need of heart transplant
As a paramedic, JC Apuada is trained to stay calm under pressure. But nothing could prepare him for the moment when his three-week-old boy's heart stopped beating. Apuada performed CPR and helped save young Oliver's life but, over the past 53 days, his son has been fighting to stay alive through five more cardiac arrest episodes. Doctors at the Stollery Children's Hospital are still trying to diagnose what's causing his heart to give out. 'I just remember walking into the door with my (older) son Theodore after picking him up from daycare, and I heard my wife saying, 'Can you come here quick?' ' recalled Apuada. 'I went to the living room, and she was holding Oliver, and he just looked like a different baby. He was colourless, and he was barely breathing. She was asking if he was OK, and I just remember saying, 'I don't know.' 'We called 911, and I started CPR. It was so scary.' After being rushed to the Stollery, doctors stabilized Oliver and performed a series of tests, but the following day he went into cardiac arrest again. He was put on an Ecmo (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) machine, which is a life support system for patients with severe heart problems. It stabilized his heart for a period of time, but he continued to have cardiac arrest episodes — a pattern all the more mysterious because Oliver's twin sister has experienced no issues. 'They told us that this isn't sustainable anymore, which was very hard for us to hear,' said Apuada. 'When we've got a perfectly healthy twin baby (girl) at home, and our toddler is also healthy. They just kept telling us, 'We don't know what's causing this to happen.' ' Doctors told Apuada and his wife Britni that their next option was to place Oliver with a Berlin heart, which is a ventricular-assist device. Oliver had to go through open heart surgery, and now has two external pumps that act as his heart. Doctors have done a multitude of tests, including genetic testing on Oliver, JC and Britni, and also performed a biopsy during the open-heart surgery. Each test came back normal. Now, JC and Britni have been told that the best course of action for their infant is for him to receive a new heart. 'They still don't have any answers,' said Apuada. 'It still doesn't really feel real. It's like we're living a nightmare, and we just can't wake up from it.' Oliver will be placed on a donor list, but because of his age, they could be waiting for as long as up to two years. Through all of the cardiac arrests, Oliver's heart has been shocked a total of nine times. 'I remember having a talk with my wife, and it hurts me to say, but when one of the arrests happened, they ended up shocking his heart twice, and I remember hearing my wife saying, 'I don't think he's going to make it,' and in the back of my head, I didn't know if he was going to come out of it — but he has,' said Apuada. 'It's been a wild roller-coaster. Just going from the lowest of the lows, and then you see him improve. But throughout all of this, all you have is hope to hold onto.' The Apuadas have been thrown so much information, and faced decisions no parents should ever have to go through. JC admits they probably haven't processed everything they're truly going through right now — but they're staying as strong as they can despite so many unknowns. A GoFundme has been set up to help support the family. 'The Stollery doctors are some of the best in the world. They're experts. But the reality is when those experts are telling us we don't have an answer for you, it's very hard,' said Apuada. 'We're going to proceed with a transplant, and he will get a new heart, but even then, they don't know if his body is going to do the same thing, because right now, they don't have answers.' Apuada said his wife had no issues throughout the pregnancy. Outside of some minor hypertension one week before giving birth that led to her having a C-section, every ultrasound, blood work and other test came back with no concerns when Oliver and his twin sister Eloise were born. They didn't have any complications when their oldest son was born, either. Oliver remains in hospital, and as the Apuadas wait for him to be stabilized enough to go home, they also wait for that call for a new heart. That's crystallized the stark reality of their situation, but also made them feel proud of Oliver, who keeps fighting despite having spent more time in hospital than at home in his young life. 'In order for Oliver to have a new heart, another family somewhere would have to go through a situation way worse than what we've gone through so far and I remember Britni saying that it's hard, because we were so close to being that family, too,' said Apuada. 'We take a lot of inspiration from Oliver.
