Venus Williams, 45, to end 16-month layoff in Washington - Omni sports
The 45-year-old American overcame a serious health scare last year and after enjoying a visit to Wimbledon decided to accept a wildcard into the US capital tournament, the first hardcourt tuneup for the US Open.
"I think I know what I want to do, but I don't always want to talk about it," Williams said. "I'm just here for now. And who knows? Maybe there is more. I hold my cards close, but at the moment, I'm focused just on this."
Williams will open against 23-year-old American Peyton Stearns, ranked 34th in the world. Stearns won her only WTA title last year on clay at Rabat.
The older sister of 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams has not played since a first-round loss at Miami last year.
"My personal goal is to have fun I think right now and enjoy the moment, not put too much pressure on myself," Venus Williams said.
"I don't know if I define success at this moment in any sort of way other than believing in myself and sticking to my process. That's not easy to do, especially after a layoff. So those are my goals."
Venus Williams, the 2000 Sydney Olympic singles champion, has won five Wimbledon singles titles and two US Open crowns.
The most recent of her 49 WTA titles came in 2019 at the Taiwan Open. That was the last year she played a full tour schedule.
"I definitely feel I'll play well," Williams said. "I'm still the same player. I'm a big hitter. I hit big. This is my brand.
"So it's about hitting big and actually putting it in. So this will be my effort. Put it in the court. That's my main goal."
A year ago, tennis was far from the most important thing on her mind.
"Yeah, my health journey was very scary. You know, this time a year ago I was preparing to go to surgery," she said. "There was no way for me to play tennis or play the US Open... I was just trying to get healthy.
"In this last year, I have been through a lot physically, so to come back and be able to play and hopefully enjoy myself is a great opportunity."
Fun of the challenge
Williams was feeling well enough to accept a wildcard and a visit to Wimbledon added some inspiration.
"I had been hitting the ball and of course I love the game and the hard courts. It's my favorite surface, what I feel comfortable on. so all those different factors," Williams said of her choice to play in Washington.
"When I went to Wimbledon this year, I was there for a day and it was so beautiful and exciting. I remembered all the times that I had, and of course the adrenaline, all those things.
"I think just the pure fun of playing the game, the fun of the challenge, overcoming. Those things are very exciting."
The seven Slam singles titles by Williams match the rest of the Washington field, which includes four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka of Japan.

Seven-time Grand Slam single champion Venus Williams returned to competitive tennis after a 16-month hiatus on Monday with a doubles victory at the WTA and ATP DC Open. The 45-year-old American joined compatriot Hailey Baptiste to defeat Canada's Eugenie Bouchard and US teen Clervie Ngounoue 6-3, 6-1 in a first-round match. "After the match Hailey asked me, 'How did that feel?' It's probably even harder to play the doubles first because I'm not a doubles player," Williams said. "So it's great to have her to kind of hold the team up. She has had the experience. She served first because she has been playing all year and playing well. I think that helped me a lot. "I think also just to get the feel for the ball. Obviously singles I have a little more experience even though doubles I have had some great results. "It's just nice to be able to play. Where I am at this year is so much different where I was at last year. It's night and day, being able to be here and prepare for the tournament as opposed to preparing for surgery a year ago." Williams makes her return to singles on Tuesday in the main court night feature match against American Peyton Stearns. A crowd of about 3,000 spectators watched the doubles match, including NBA star Kevin Durant, who is from Washington. "We were both so focused and after the match, I was, like, 'Did you see Kevin Durant walk in?' She was, like, 'Yeah,'" Williams said. Fans chanting "K-D" made it tough for Baptiste to focus but she was happy to have a famous fan in the stands. "It's sick that he came out to support us," she said. "It's really cool." "I was, like, 'I want to show KD what I can do. Hit the ball to me,'" Williams said. "They hit every ball to you. I was, like, OK, whatever. However we win is fine." For Williams, who battled health issues during much of her layoff, just being back on the court was a victory. "I just want to be healthy. You can play all the matches in the world, can you do all the things in the world, but when your health is gone or when your opportunities are being taken away, it just puts a whole new perspective," Williams said. "I wasn't even thinking about tennis at that point. Just wanted to have a successful surgery that I lived through. "Tennis is a game, it's our life, literally our obsession, it's actually a cult, I think. But at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter if your health is not there. "Definitely put it in perspective for me and maybe made it easier to make the decision to maybe come back out here and maybe play even freer." 'She's such a legend' Williams said she enjoys sharing her emotions with spectators after a triumph. "It's so much work," she said. "I've been training for months to get to this moment, and then you train to be prepared to win in this moment, but it's not a guarantee. You don't win until that final point is over. "It's important to share those emotions with the crowd." Bouchard will retire next week in Canada and was pleased for one last meeting with Williams. "To play against her one last time is fun and special," Bouchard said. "I was like kudos to you to keep kicking it. She's 14 years older than me and still plugging away. Tennis: Alcaraz withdraws from Montreal event for Wimbledon recovery - Omni sports
World number two Carlos Alcaraz, a five-time Grand Slam singles champion, has withdrawn from next week's ATP Canadian Open in Toronto to recover from Wimbledon, organizers said on Monday. The 22-year-old Spaniard lost to top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final earlier this month in a bid for his third consecutive crown in the grass-court classic. "I'm really sad to have to miss the National Bank Open in Toronto," Alcaraz said in a statement. "I tried my best to be ready for the tournament as it's one I really enjoy playing, but it comes just too soon for me as I recover after Wimbledon. Olympics: Champion Marchand to focus on medleys at worlds - Omni sports
French swimmer Leon Marchand is skipping two of the four events which brought him gold medal success at the Paris Olympics last year in the upcoming world championships in Singapore in order to challenge the 200m medley world record, his club president in Toulouse announced on Monday. Marchand was one of the standout stars of the Paris Games when he claimed gold in the 200m breaststroke and 200m butterfly as well the 200m and 400m individual medleys. However, he is now set to concentrate purely on the medley events. "He won't be doing the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke," Michel Coloma of the Dauphins du TOEC club told AFP. "He wants to see what happens in the 200m medley, without having any other races on his plate." Marchand is already the world record holder for the 400m medley, having snatched it from American legend Michael Phelps in 2023, but he now wants a crack at Ryan Lochte's 2011 record of 1min 54.00sec for the 200m medley. He came close in his Olympic final, which he won in 1min 54.06sec, setting an Olympic record in the process. Marchand will begin his world championships on July 30 with the heats of the 200m medley, with the final the next day.
