Tennis: Alcaraz withdraws from Montreal event for Wimbledon recovery - Omni sports

World number two Carlos Alcaraz, a five-time Grand Slam singles champion, has withdrawn from next week's ATP Canadian Open in Toronto to recover from Wimbledon, organizers said on Monday.
The 22-year-old Spaniard lost to top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final earlier this month in a bid for his third consecutive crown in the grass-court classic.
"I'm really sad to have to miss the National Bank Open in Toronto," Alcaraz said in a statement.
"I tried my best to be ready for the tournament as it's one I really enjoy playing, but it comes just too soon for me as I recover after Wimbledon. I wish the event well and look forward to being back on the Canadian courts next year."
Alcaraz had his best Canada run in 2023, falling to American Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals.
"It's disappointing to lose a player of Carlos' quality, as we know our fans were looking forward to watching him," tournament director Karl Hale said.
"Although he has been on the scene for a while, he's still at the beginning of his career and there will be plenty of opportunities for Canadians to see him again in the future."
American Sebastian Korda, the world number 33 struggling with a leg injury, and Poland's 38th-ranked Hubert Hurkacz, fighting a knee injury, have also withdrawn.

Tennis: Sinner rehires the fitness coach he fired for playing a role in his doping case - Omni sports

Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner has rehired Umberto Ferrara as his fitness coach nearly a year after firing him for his role in the top-ranked player's doping case. The move comes after Sinner recently removed fitness coach Marco Panichi and physiotherapist Ulises Badio from his team. "Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level,' a statement from Sinner's team said Wednesday. Last year, Sinner tested positive twice for a trace amount of an anabolic steroid in March; the case wasn't made public until August, shortly before the U.S. Open, which he ended up winning for the second of his four Grand Slam titles. He initially was completely cleared, based on the defense that he accidentally was exposed to the banned substance, Clostebol, via a massage from his then-physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi. Sinner said his fitness trainer at the time, Ferrara, purchased a product in Italy and gave it to Naldi for a cut on Naldi's finger. Naldi then treated Sinner while not wearing gloves. Sinner then fired Naldi and Ferrara, and Ferrara was hired briefly by Matteo Berrettini, another Italian player. The World Anti-Doping Agency appealed the exoneration, and Sinner agreed to serve a three-month ban that ended right before the Italian Open in May of this year. Sinner, who won Wimbledon this month, will return to action at the Cincinnati Open next month as he prepares to defend his U.S. Open title. Venus Williams Becomes 2nd Oldest Woman to Win WTA Game

Rana Atef Early Wednesday, Venus Williams reached a new milestone in her career after being the second oldest female tennis player to win a WTA game. The seven-time Grand Slam champion said after the game, 'I had to come back because they informed me earlier this year I'm on COBRA.' s She defeated world No. 35 Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 at the Mubadala Citi DC Open. 'So I was like, 'I gotta get my benefits!' You guys know what it's like. I'm always at the doctor so I need this insurance.' Williams entered this tournament as a wild card and she didn't play on the WTA Tour since March 2024. She didn't win any official match in 709 days. Williams admits that she never officially retired. She never closed the door. In her last few years on tour, the results weren't good. Injuries piled up, as they tend to do for athletes who approach their 40s. 'There were so many times I wanted to coast and kind of chill,' Williams said. 'Do you know how hard it is to play tennis? You don't know how much work goes into this. It's 9-to-5 except you're running the whole time and then lifting weights and then you're repeating it the next day.' Williams is not the oldest women's player to win a match on the WTA Tour. That would be Martina Navratilova winning a first-round match at Wimbledon in 2004. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Zizo relishes fierce competition in revamped Ahly squad - Egyptian Football

'We have a strong squad, especially after all the new signings. There will be strong competition between all the players, and this is a good thing for the team and the coach, who has plenty of options,' Zizo told the club's official website on Tuesday. The 29-year-old completed a sensational free transfer last month from rivals Zamalek to Ahly, in one of the most high-profile moves in recent Egyptian football history. The record African champions have added eight players to their squad during the close season, including Zizo, defender Yassin Marei, Tunisian midfielder Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane, goalkeeper Mohamed Seha, defender Ahmed Ramadan, former Aston Villa midfielder Mahmoud Trezeguet, and striker Mohamed Sherif. 'All the players are motivated and will deliver their best performance to help the team win titles,' Zizo said. 'Ahly participates in many tournaments and needs a strong and ready roster with the same quality.' Zizo featured for Ahly in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, making three appearances and registering one assist, despite the team's early exit in the group stage. 'We put in strong performances at the Club World Cup, but we missed several scoring chances. We'll do our best to return to the tournament in the 2029 edition,' he added. Ahly are currently holding a pre-season training camp in Tunisia ahead of the domestic league season, set to kickoff in August. 'It's important for the players to be part of the preparatory camp. Everyone is eager for the new season and motivated to achieve victories,' Zizo said. 'I'm looking forward to scoring my first goal for Ahly. I hope to feature in the opening league match, but I know I need to be patient,' he added. 'I thank the fans for the warm welcome and hope to meet their expectations. I can't wait for the league to start and to play in front of the supporters at Cairo Stadium.'
