Women rising against patriarchy's silent saboteurs

IN her essay Patriarchy and Women's Subordination: A Theoretical Analysis, Abeda Sultana observes that women today occupy positions of power and have made notable gains in various spheres.
Yet, she argues, this progress does not alter the fundamental reality: the system remains male-dominated. Women are often accommodated rather than empowered — permitted entry, but not granted equal authority. At the heart of this imbalance, Sultana identifies patriarchy as the primary barrier to women's true advancement. Despite variations in its expression, the core principle persists: men remain in control.
While patriarchy undeniably obstructs women's ascent to leadership and influence, a troubling irony emerges: the system often finds its most effective allies among women themselves. As Anna Mokgokong compellingly argues in her piece Women Are Their Own Worst Enemies, women frequently fail to support one another. There is a disturbing pattern of mutual distrust, jealousy, and competition — a dynamic that undermines collective progress.
This phenomenon is vividly illustrated in Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, where he recounts the 'crab bucket' analogy: when one crab tries to escape, the others pull it back down. Similarly, when a woman rises, others — conditioned by internalised patriarchy — may unconsciously conspire to bring her down. This 'pull her down' syndrome reflects deep-seated insecurities fostered by a system that pits women against each other for limited spaces at the table.

As Judith Butler writes in Precarious Life: The Powers of Mourning and Violence, 'We're undone by each other. And if we're not, we're missing something.' Solidarity is not optional; it is essential. If women are to dismantle patriarchal dominance, they must embrace the empowering mantra: 'If it is to be, it is up to us.'
Consider this powerful observation from a social media post I once read: 'If wealth were the
inevitable result of hard work and enterprise, every woman in Africa would be a millionaire.'
How true. For generations, African women have shouldered the dual burden of labour and caregiving — working the fields, raising children, sustaining families — yet were systematically denied access to land, property, capital, and secure employment. Their contributions were rendered invisible, their potential stifled. Recall that in the 1950s and '60s, single women teachers in many African countries were dismissed from their jobs if they became pregnant. These were not isolated injustices, but part of a broader architecture of oppression.
Yet, from this crucible emerged resilience. Women of the 1960s and '70s, forged in adversity, created self-help mechanisms like stokvels, lifting themselves through collective effort. They understood a hard truth: 'Women, you were on your own.'
In his article, Adam Minus (with Affiong L Affiong), poses a critical question: 'What have women not yet acquired, recognised, or claimed that would bring them to the table of power?' He highlights the glaring invisibility of women in African politics and public life. Despite their numbers, women often appear passive—unwilling or unable to leverage their collective strength. The result? A self-reinforcing cycle: men lead, women follow; men speak, women listen; men decide, women react.
Affiong asks: When will the dancing stop and the discussion begin?
When will praise-singing give way to negotiation?
When will catering make room for conversation?
These symbolic acts, women dancing to welcome male leaders at airports, must evolve into meaningful participation. The question remains: Can women stop playing on men's terms and begin charting their own path? Will they build autonomous political constituencies, redefine the rules of engagement, and demand power rather than beg for it?
There is inspiration to be drawn from history. Frantz Fanon, in The Wretched of the Earth, describes how, during Algeria's liberation struggle, women transformed their societal roles. No longer seen as mere complements to men, they forged new identities through courage and sacrifice. They redefined gender relations through action and agency, a powerful lesson in self-determination.
Globally, scholars offer both caution and hope. Francis Fukuyama, in Women and the Evolution of World Politics, suggests that while male tendencies toward dominance and aggression are deeply rooted, they can be redirected. He envisions a future — by mid-21st century — where ageing, affluent democracies in Europe and the US will see more women in leadership roles, driven by demographic and educational shifts.
Hanna Rosin's The End of Men echoes this: not that men are disappearing, but that male dominance is waning, particularly in economies that reward communication, education, and adaptability — areas where women are increasingly excelling. Yet, as Ralph Richard Banks cautions, this shift is not uniform. In many developing regions, economic parity remains distant. Still, to deny the global strides women have made would be disingenuous.
South Africa stands as a testament to women's resilience and leadership. We honour the legacy of Dr Margaret Mncadi, Victoria Mxenge, Zondeni Sobukwe, Winnie Mothopeng, Dorothy Nyembe, Philda Shange, Lilian Ngoyi, Winnie Mandela, and Helen Joseph — heroines of our liberation struggle. We celebrate global icons such as Miriam Makeba, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, and Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. Their courage reminds us that we can — and must — produce more.
I write not as a detached observer, but as someone shaped by the strength of women. I was once a boy who watched in awe as my mother navigated hardship with grace and power. I am now a husband who knows that there can be no true struggle between men and women — only a shared struggle for humanity. The real battle is not man versus woman, but humanity versus inequality.
The path forward demands solidarity, self-belief, and sisterhood. Women must stop pulling each other down. We must lift each other up. For when women rise together, the world rises with them.

'Our understanding is that Parliament has counsel, even senior counsel within its own members. We must use the services of legal counsel rather than external services,' Sangoni-Diko said. MK Party MP David Skosana said external legal counsel should not displace the MPs from their oversight duty. 'We propose that external legal counsel may propose a line of questioning, but members must retain control and the scope of inquiry,' he said. This was contrary to the proposal that the format of questioning of witnesses be determined by the external legal counsel in consultation with chairperson of the committee, Soviet Lekganyane. Skosana said the appointment of a vetted external legal counsel should be transparent and that they should be told about the costs of their services. 'We hope there are no people lined up already, like we have seen in State Capture corruption. We have seen that and we can back it up,' he said. ActionSA MP Dereleen James was unsure if the parliamentary legal services have the requisite exposure to the responsibilities of an evidence leader. James said an evidence leader should have demonstrable exposure in criminal law and prosecutorial experience to guide the evidential process, or a legal counsel with proven handling of complex and interconnected evidence, as demonstrated in the Zondo Commission of Inquiry. While the draft terms of reference propose that witnesses be allowed to have legal assistance at their own cost, the Red Berets want them to have legal access with the assistance of the Legal Aid Board. 'In the interest of making justice accessible to everybody, they should be able to access Legal Aid if they want to have legal representation,' EFF MP Leigh-Ann Mathys said. In its submission, the DA provided a new section in the terms of reference to deal with the confidentiality and protection of whistle-blowers. The party said all individuals providing evidence should be afforded appropriate protection from retaliation or threats. 'Whistle-blowers and other sources that come forward with sensitive information are protected under the law, possibly with the assistance of witness protection.' IFP MP Albert Mncwango said: 'We need to pay particular attention to the security and safety of our witnesses.' Regarding the venues for meetings of the committee, it is proposed that they be held in Parliament or any other suitable venue. It is also proposed that hybrid or virtual meetings be held to accommodate those MPs unable to travel to Cape Town. Skosana said they should have secure platform with identity verification and secure channels for sensitive evidence, in addition to avoid cost if it held meetings outside Parliament. 'We should avoid what the State Capture Commission has done at all costs,' he said. DA MP Diane Barnard Kohler said their meetings should be in Parliament since MPs were provided with accommodation and transport. 'I would vehement object to this being moved elsewhere,' she said.

Ramaphosa unaware of SANDF chief's controversial Iran visit

Addressing the media, Ramaphosa's spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said Ramaphosa did not sanction Maphwanya's visit. He stated that it was Defence Minister Angie Motshekga, not Ramaphosa, who approved Maphwanya's travel. 'As much as the president is the appointing authority and the commander-in-chief, he does not get involved in supervising the general's travel. That process sits with the minister. Magwenya said there was a concern about Maphwanya's trip. 'At this period of heightened geopolitical tensions as well as conflict in the Middle East, one can say the visit was ill advised and more so the expectation is that the general should have been a lot more circumspect with the comments he makes, which delve into the area of foreign policy that only the president, as well as the Department of International Relations, are responsible for.' Maphwanya's trip took place amid tensions between South Africa and the US President Donald Trump imposed 30% tariffs on South African goods, which were implemented this month. Magwenya said South Africa was in a process of resetting diplomatic and political relations with the United States, as well as balancing the trade relationship in a mutually beneficial manner between the two countries. 'Of resolving the relationship or resolving issues around the relationship with the US, you then have senior government or military officials in statements that will further inflame the situation. It is not helpful at all,' he said. Both the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and the Defence have distanced themselves from Maphwanya's remarks, citing that Ramaphosa and DIRCO were custodians of foreign policy. Magwenya said Ramaphosa will meet Maphwanya within the next week regarding his 'ill-advised' trip. 'I can't say when that meeting will happen, but there will be an engagement between the president and the general. So it's still early to say what the outcome of that engagement will be.' He would not comment on the possible consequence, if there was to be any, for the defence's chief amid calls by the DA for him to be hauled before a court martial. 'It is also difficult to speak to. One must consider what constitutes the grave nature of charges or accusations that would require a court-martial,' Magwenya said. Deputy Defence Minister Bantu Holomisa told Newzroom Afrika that he was unaware of the visit. 'I don't know what the purpose of his visit was. It is only the minister who will be in the know. If he did not ask for permission to leave from the minister, then he will have to swim in his stew,' he said. Holomisa also said such visits outside the country were authorised by Motshekga. 'The last word has been said by the Presidency, and the Presidency is the custodian of our foreign policy. There is nothing one can contest on that, but what we should be waiting for is either to hear the minister herself addressing this issue or alternatively wait for General Maphwanya to come back and tell the nation how he went there, what was the purpose.' He said since the matter was in the open, Maphwanya should be allowed to respond openly and be transparent about it. Holomisa added that it was too early to say what would happen to Maphwanya. 'If he went abroad without permission from the president or the minister, he will have to face the music and explain on what basis he had to utter such words, which are creating controversy,' he said.

Mbeki and Ramaphosa's relationship remains 'comradely cordial'

Image: Boxer Ngwenya / Independent Newspapers The relationship between President Cyril Ramaphosa and former president Thabo Mbeki remained 'comradely cordial' despite the latter's ongoing criticisms of both the president and his administration. This is according to Ramaphosa's spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, when he was responding to questions from the media on Thursday during a briefing on the president's upcoming public programme and other issues. 'Look for President Ramaphosa, the relationship with the former president is one that is cordial, or rather call it comradely cordial as well as professional,' Magwenya said. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading This comes after several foundations withdrew from the Preparatory Task Team for the National Dialogue and announced their non-attendance at the convention over issues of budget and the government's control of the initiative they deem is being rushed and ought to be driven by citizens. Magwenya would not be drawn into commenting on Ramaphosa's position in terms of Mbeki, who has not been shy to criticise Ramaphosa and the government. 'With observations around what the former president is attempting to do, the president will not venture into that. We'll leave that to your good self and others who observe developments as they occur in the political space,' he said. Magwenya said Ramaphosa was by far the most publicly criticised and attacked president by a former president, which was a slight departure from the unwritten rule in terms of the courtesy that a former president grants to a sitting president. 'The president also recognises and accepts that he is not above criticism, and that we live in a democracy where there's free speech and people are welcome to openly criticise him. That's not something that he loses sleep over from many issues that he has to worry about.' He said it would have been great to have Mbeki at the convention. 'If he is not there, he is not there. The reality is that the show will go on and South Africans will continue with the dialogue process, and hopefully at some point, not only the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, but also other foundations, will find it among themselves to participate in the process.' Magwenya was asked whether DA leader and Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen was still part of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) after his party announced that it would not be part of the National Dialogue. 'I don't know if he has been participating or not, but I think, to be honest with you, it's neither. The IMC has made significant progress in getting us to this point regarding the national convention,' he said. Magwenya also said the IMC has done a stellar job in ensuring that the costs for the national convention were reduced, securing a lot of sponsorship for the convention, and ensuring that there was no extra pressure that was placed on the fiscus. 'So the IMC has been operating quite well. If Minister Steenhuisen has not participated, I don't think that has created any gaps in the IMC. Maybe, some of his colleagues may have missed him, but I don't think IMC as such would have suffered consequences.' Ramaphosa will on Friday lead the government delegation and officially open the first national convention that will be held until Saturday at Unisa in Pretoria. The convention will bring together about 1,000 delegates representing the diversity of the South African nation.
