Coronation Street star comes out as non binary and shares new relationship
The actor, known for their role as Sunita Alahan in the ITV soap and also for their iconic role in comedy Dinnerladies, disclosed that it was only recently that they discovered a term that encapsulated the feelings they've had throughout their life.
"Non-binary" describes a gender identity that falls outside of the traditional male/female binary, encompassing individuals who identify as both, neither, or somewhere in between.

In conversation with Kaye Adams on her How to be 60 podcast, Shobna, 58, said: 'I've become more happy describing myself as a person. What do people call it now? Non binary. So, I suppose that's who I am."

The star, who now uses the preferred pronouns 'she/they' on social media platforms, went on to say: 'I've never had a word for it, but I've learnt from our younger generation what that might look like in terms of a word, because I know what it feels like in terms of being me.
"All the way through my life I've never had the words for that and I've never managed to explain that and I suppose my immediate family have not really thought about it.
"They've just thought: 'Shobna is either extremely feminine or extremely masculine.'
"Because I was just accepted as a person who fell out of the tree and equally the person who put on all this makeup and did a dance."
Shobna shared that it was during a chat with a non-binary sound engineer on a job that they came to understand their own identity.
"The sound person said to me that they were non-binary and I said: 'what is that?' So, then they explained and I thought – 'well, I feel like that, but I didn't ever have that vocabulary."
Shobna added: "And now, I feel liberated to voice it out loud.
"I believe people around me have accepted my identity for a long time without needing any explanation, but I suppose when I'm asked now, I'll openly say it."
Shobna tied the knot with architect Anshu Srivastava in a Hindu ceremony in 1990 when they were both 23, but the couple parted ways four years later.
A year after their split, Shobna welcomed a son Akshay, who is now 30.
The actress was also romantically involved with Emmerdale actor Gary Turner for four years from 1999 to 2003 during their 12-year stint on Coronation Street, sharing on the podcast: "I did have relationships, but they were very public.
"It was unfortunate for me, because I felt that I didn't get enough time to nurture a relationship, expand my family, and maintain a private life, because it was so exposed and lacked privacy."
Shobna is currently in a relationship, revealing to Kaye Adams: "I think I've loved this person all my life."
When asked if they would consider dating all genders, the star added: "That is also something I'm exploring – what that signifies to me.
"So yes, I would absolutely be open to a relationship with a person, regardless of their gender."

Ridley season 3: Will the show return for another series of the gripping drama?
All we've been able to talk about lately is ITV's Ridley. But, can you blame us? Between the gripping storyline and Adrian Dunbar's singing, we've been kept on the edge of our seats thanks to season two. But, will there be a third season of Ridley to look forward to? Sure, the second season might not have officially ended yet (although you *can* binge all four episodes on ITVX), but we like to be prepared when it comes to our TV. All in the name of five star entertainment journalism, of course. Clearly, we're not the only ones feeling this way, either. "Please let there be a series three," one fan wrote on X, as another celebrated its return, posting: "Good to have #Ridley back." So, will Ridley return for a third season? Here's everything we know so far about a potential Ridley season three as well as which of the current Ridley cast might appear... ITV is yet to confirm if there will be a third instalment of Ridley, but the cast of the hit show have spoken out in hopes that there will be – which has to be a positive sign, right? Speaking to Country & Town House, Bronagh Waugh (who plays DI Carol Farman on Ridley, and who is also currently appearing in Channel 4's In Flight), said: "There are plenty of [plot] ideas if we are lucky enough to get a third series." Waugh went on to say that it would be "really interesting" for the show to continue delving into the private lives of its central detectives, as well as the cases. That being said, "let's see what happens," she added. Ridley wouldn't be Ridley without Alex Ridley himself, played by Adrian Dunbar, so if a third season is commissioned, we're sure this role would be reprised. However, scheduling conflicts could put a spanner in the works, as there's been talks lately of a Line of Duty season seven, which would surely take up a lot of Dunbar's time if it's given the green light from the BBC. Given her comments about a potential third season, we'd also hope to see Bronagh Waugh return as Ridley's former protege, DI Carol Farman. As for the rest of the show's cast, if a third season follows the current format – that being, a new case solved every episode – then we can expect to see plenty of new characters joining the likes of Dunbar and Waugh, in addition to the recurring cast that includes Terence Maynard as DCI Paul Goodwin, George Bukhari as DC Darren Lakhan, and Georgie Glen as pathologist Dr Wendy Newstone. Season one of Ridley was released in the UK on 28 August 2022, while season two arrived on 10 August 2025. Following that timeline – and, if cast scheduling conflicts don't add further delays – a third season could be on our TV screens in August 2028, but considering there's been no official confirmation of a Ridley season three, this is all speculative! In the meantime, both series of Ridley are available to stream on ITVX.

Why was Coronation Street star Jack P. Shepherd attacked in Asda?
Coronation Street star Jack P. Shepherd was "really beat" by an elderly woman in a supermarket when he was just 12 years old. The 37-year-old actor - who has played David Platt in the ITV soap since 2000 - recalled going shopping with his mum Janet when they were accosted by an "old" lady, who was unimpressed by his soap alter ego, prompting his parent to intervene when she lashed out. Jack told his Coronation Street co-star Ben Price, 54, and his former soap colleague Colson Smith, 27, on the latest episode of their On the Sofa podcast: "I was recognised by an old woman in the freezer section. I was with my mum doing the big shop. "And [the woman] started to hit me with a handbag. "Before saying anything. She was so furious to see me. "I was just cheeky. So I'd have been 12. "[The woman] full on really beat me with a bag. "My mum went up [to the woman]. I think my mum kind of like half laughed it off and went, 'It's not real.'" Elsewhere in the podcast, Jack remembered he once faked being a Co-Op worker so police could stop die-hard Coronation Street fans from mobbing him. The soap star switched on the Christmas Lights in the West Yorkshire town of Kippax, and thousands of people turned up to see him kick off the festive celebrations Once the lights had been switched on, Jack recalled a "siege" of people rushing towards him, and he had to seek refuge in a nearby Co-Op supermarket. He said: "There was a sea of people [that] turned up to see a young David Platt. I must have been about 13, 14, something like that. Really young. "And I turned on their Christmas lights, and there was a siege. "They all started to head towards [me] and tried to climb on the stage. "They tried to get on, and I had to be escorted into the Co-Op. "[The Co-Op staff] had to lock the doors of the Co-Op. All the Co-Op workers were in there, and we couldn't get out because they surrounded the building. "I couldn't get out and go through the crowds because there were too many [fans]." Worried that Jack's safety was at risk, police escorted him out of Kippax. He dressed up as a Co-Op worker and hid his face to avoid being seen by a rush of fans, but his disguise did not work. Jack revealed: "Honestly, [there were] too many [fans]. We had to then get a police escort out of Kippax. "The police were called because I was a small child. "And police escorts had to arrive on motorbikes, and they had to put blue lights on, blue light me out. "I had the hat and I had the t-shirt. "I was going out, I was going out through the crowds, keeping my head down [as a] Co-Op worker. And I got into the car. "And I handed the hat back to one of the Co-Op workers. "And then [all the fans] turned like zombies. And they all went, 'He's there!' And they all ran towards me. "And I dived in the car. And the police had to blue light me out [of Kippax]. "And I remember physically watching the police on the bikes, and they were kicking people back. They were literally kicking people back."
