The Hong Kong Observatory said it may issue the Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal as early as midnight on Saturday.
The forecaster said the decision hinges on how a broad area of low pressure currently affecting the central and northern South China Sea develops.
Located within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong as of noon, this system has the potential to become a tropical cyclone.
The observatory said it will assess the need for a warning signal to be issued based on the storm's intensity and proximity to the territory.
"Under the combined effect of the area of low pressure and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds will strengthen. Depending on the local wind change, the observatory will consider issuing the Strong Monsoon Signal," it said.
People should prepare for unsettled weather, as rainbands are currently impacting Guangdong's coastal waters.
Hong Kong can expect squally showers beginning on Sunday, with rainfall anticipated to increase significantly over the following days.

Strong Monsoon Signal may replace T1: HKO

Strong Monsoon Signal may replace T1: HKO The observatory said the tropical depression is moving away from Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Observatory said on Sunday afternoon that the Standby Signal No 1 will remain in force until at least 8 pm, but it no longer plans to issue a higher signal. Forecasters said the tropical depression is gradually moving away from Hong Kong, maintaining a distance of more than 600 kilometres away from the SAR. "The tropical depression is expected to skirt the southwestern coast of Hainan Island [on Sunday night] and will move further away from Hong Kong," acting senior scientific officer, Chong Sze-ning, said. "The observatory will then consider replacing the Standby Signal No 1 with the Strong Monsoon Signal." However, Chong said heavy rain and strong winds could still affect Hong Kong on Sunday night and Monday morning. She said showers will be heavy at times and seas will be rough with swells, and members of the public should refrain from engaging in water sports.

Hong Kong Observatory issues T1 typhoon warning signal

New users who download our updated app get a seven-day free trial. The Hong Kong Observatory issued the No 1 typhoon signal at 10.20pm on Saturday night, with the warning to be in place until at least 9am on Sunday before being upgraded to No 3, as the city was expected to face occasional squally showers and thunderstorms. The weather forecaster said an area of low pressure over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea had intensified into a tropical depression, and was estimated to be about 690km (429 miles) south-southwest of the city at 10pm. The Observatory is expected to upgrade the signal to the No 3 warning between 9am and noon on Sunday. The tropical cyclone would maintain a distance of over 500km from Hong Kong on Sunday, the forecaster said. 'Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds will strengthen tomorrow,' a spokesman said.
