Malaysia data centres battle higher power costs, unclear pricing
A key element of the uncertainty stems from the bands used to calculate power bills in the tiered pricing system, with industry players saying most major centres are expected to fall in the ultra-high voltage category with the highest tariffs.
With many in the industry unprepared for the scale of increases, some investors may now adopt a wait-and-watch approach, said Gary Goh, founder and director of data centre advisory firm Sprint DC Consulting.
"For a 100-megawatt (MW) facility, this could translate to an additional $15 million to $20 million per year without considering fuel surcharge," he added.
The government plans to announce a fuel surcharge every month that reflects changes in fuel prices and foreign exchange. This month the surcharge stands at zero, state grid operator Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) said on its website on Tuesday.
Malaysia is set for the region's fastest surge in data centre power demand, tripling to 21% by 2027 from 7% in 2022, a joint report in May by consultancy Bain & Co and firms such as Google and Singapore's state-owned Temasek showed.
The new tariff structure means operators of big data centre operators will now account for a higher share of grid management costs than smaller peers, said Cheam Tat Inn, managing director of the Malaysian arm of U.S. operator Equinix.
"If you are a large data centre, then you pay for a bigger share of the infrastructure or distribution network costs," Cheam said.
Equinix, with two data centres in Malaysia, was looking at various providers of alternative energy in anticipation of higher tariffs, Cheam said last month.
Tenaga declined to comment, directing queries to Malaysia's Energy Commission, which did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has defended the increases as necessary to boost social spending.
Until now, Malaysia had used lower power prices and a stable power grid to lure investment in data centres.
But tariff hikes could drive investment towards neighbouring Vietnam and Thailand, said Mahadhir Aziz, president of the Data Centre Association of Malaysia, which groups firms such as Bridge, AirTrunk and DayOne, as well as Equinix.
"The government would have to look at this now, at least regionally," he added.
"Data centres or digital infrastructure business, while they may have invested in land and buildings here, can actually still reconsider their investments."

In February, The Associated Press revealed previously unreported details about the tech giant's close partnership with the Israeli Ministry of Defence, with military use of commercial artificial intelligence products skyrocketing by nearly 200 times after the deadly Oct 7, 2023, Hamas attack. The AP reported that the Israeli military uses Azure to transcribe, translate and process intelligence gathered through mass surveillance, which can then be cross-checked with Israel's in-house AI-enabled targeting systems.

Google Photos introduces conversational AI editing: Here's how it will work

Google Pixel 10 launch event: All the biggest announcements including new AI features
Google's annual Made by Google hardware event was held on Wednesday, August 20, where the tech giant announced its tenth generation Pixel line-up with a total of seven new devices. Even though some of the upgrades unveiled by Google were leaked in advance, the tech giant still shared some announcements, including new AI-related features, that no one had heard about yet. Here's a roundup of all the big and exciting reveals from Google's Pixel 10 event. The Pixel 10 is the smallest and most affordable smartphone in Google's newest lineup. It comes with a 6.3-inch 120Hz OLED screen that can reach 3,000 nits of peak brightness. The device comes with stock Android 16 out of the box, with Google promising seven years of OS updates and security patches. The iconic pill-shaped camera island on the back now houses three cameras. Apart from a 48MP primary sensor and a 13MP ultrawide shooter, there is also a 10.8MP telephoto shooter with 5x optical zoom and 20x Super Res Zoom support. The Pixel 10 is powered by the Tensor G5 chipset which enables it to last up to 24 hours on a single charge. Another new upgrade is that the phone now supports Qi2-certified Pixelsnap wireless charging with speeds up to 15W. The Pixel 10 is priced at Rs 79,999 and available for pre-order today. The Pixel 10 Pro is powered by the same Tensor G5 chipset and comes with 16GB of RAM and at least 256GB of storage. The Pixel 10 Pro XL is fairly similar to its Pro sibling in terms of hardware, but there are some notable differences between the two. For instance, the Pro XL has a 6.3-inch OLED screen while the Pro model has a bigger 6.8-inch LTPO OLED screen. The Pixel 10 Pro XL is available for pre-order from today and is available at Rs 1,24,999. All three phones also come with one year of free Google AI Pro. There have also been some improvements made to the camera system and battery life of the Pro Fold. It is available in Moonstone and Jade colours. The India pricing of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold has not been revealed yet, but it costs $1,799 in the US. The latest smartwatch in the Pixel series – Pixel Watch 4 – features the first-ever Google Actua 360 display with 10 per cent more active area and 16 per cent smaller bezels. The smartwatch is 50 per cent brighter compared to its predecessor and gets a 3000-nit display. It is backed by the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 and an ML-powered co-processor. For the first time, the Pixel Watch is a serviceable device where the display and battery can be replaced. The watch can also track a user's sleep, monitor their temperature, offer real-time bike stats, provide personalised automatic tracking and offer new exercise options. It also features an AI-powered health coach alongside a fitness coach and a sleeping coach as well. The Pixel Watch 4 starts at $349. The Pixel Buds 2a are yet another addition to Google's lineup of truly wireless earbuds. It is powered by Google's Tensor A1 chip, allowing hands-free access to Gemini. The Buds 2a come integrated with active noise cancellation (ANC). Google also claims that with ANC on, the buds get seven hours of listening time and 20 hours with the charging case. And with the ANC off, the device can run for 10 hours and 27 hours with the case. The Buds 2a case also features FindHub to help users locate their buds if they go missing. The device features two microphones for crystal-clear calls and instructions and a touch control sensor for music control and more functions. The buds are water- and sweat-resistant with an IP54 rating and provide active in-ear pressure relief. The device will be available in two colours and will be priced at $129. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 buds has been upgraded with some new features, including a tone to the case to help users locate their buds. These wireless buds also get active noise cancellation (ANC) and transparency mode with active in-ear pressure relief. Pro 2 gets three microphones, a motion-detecting accelerometer, and a gyroscope to help users accept incoming calls or dismiss them by simply nodding or shaking their heads. It is powered by a Tensor A1 chipset. They are also compatible with the PixelSnap. The device features a listening time of 12 hours and 48 hours with the case. When the ANC is turned off, and with the AWS on, they can listen to uninterrupted music for up to eight hours and 30 hours with the charging case. The device will be available in five colourways, such as Porcelain, Iris, Hazel, Wintergreen, Peony, and Moonstone. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 will be priced at $229. Google also introduced Pixelsnap, a new magnetic technology like Apple's MagSafe that comes built into all Pixel 10 devices. This means users will now be able to effortlessly snap wireless chargers, stands, grips and other accessories. The tech giant also said that the new Pixel 10 series phones support wireless charging speeds up to 25W. Google announced a new AI feature to help users take better photos using the Pixel 10. Camera Coach uses Gemini to provide Pixel owners with tips such as the best angles and lighting for taking a photo in real-time. In addition, it also unveiled a new conversational photo editing tool that allows users to verbally tell Gemini what they want to change in a photo, whether it is increasing the brightness, removing objects, or changing the background. Google demoed another AI feature called Magic Cue that lets users take quick action across apps like Gmail, Calendar, Messages, and Screenshots by accessing relevant information. In Wednesday's live demo, Google showed how Magic Cue can pull hotel reservation details and suggest a ready-to-send message to a friend asking about dinner plans tonight. Users can send the message in just one click. It can also be used to suggest sharing photos or other info directly in Messages. Cue runs securely via the Tensor G5 chip and Gemini Nano, giving users control over data access and the ability to toggle it on or off, as per Google. Google is also bringing an AI-powered health coach to the Fitbit app. The coach creates tailored workout plans, adapts routines in real time, and offers sleep improvement tips. Launching in October this year, the new feature will be part of the redesigned Fitbit app and work with Pixel watches as well as Fitbit trackers and wearables.
