70 years on and Stalin's ‘gifted' skyscraper still looms over this Polish city

Independent6 days ago
Seventy years after Soviet dictator Josef Stalin 'gifted' Warsaw its towering Palace of Culture and Science, the skyscraper at the heart of Poland's capital still stirs strong feelings.
The Palace, marking its 70th anniversary on 22 July 1955 when Poland was part of the Soviet-led communist Eastern Bloc, was conceived by Stalin as a symbol of Soviet domination and initially bore his name.
"If you put a big palace, a kind of skyscraper at the time, in the middle of the city that can be seen from 30 km (19 miles)away, it shows the power," said Dorota Zmarzlak, a member of the palace's board.
Younger people no longer see it that way, she said.
After the end of communist rule in Poland in 1989, many Soviet-era monuments were removed and street names changed.
The Palace remained, even though prominent politician Radoslaw Sikorski, who is now Poland's foreign minister, called for it to be demolished in 2007.
It has been used as a concert venue and hosted political events, exhibitions and fashion shows. A riot broke out when the Rolling Stones played there in 1967, long before communist rule ended.
"It was an escape for me, I could go somewhere," said Zygmunt Kowalski, 89, a retired railway worker who moved to Warsaw a month after the Palace opened, and swam with his daughter in its pool as well as seeing films and concerts there.
"Everything can be torn down, but let this stay for future generations, as proof of what once was ... the next generations will have evidence that communism was here," he said.
The Palace still has four theatres, a large cinema and museums, and hosts exhibitions. The concert hall is being renovated.
Some younger Warsaw residents focus less on the Palace's political history than on its status as a Warsaw landmark.
Karol Los, a 23-year-old student, said the Palace, now surrounded by modern skyscrapers, is inseparable from the city's identity.
"For me, it's a symbol of Warsaw. I think young people see it very differently than the older generation," he said.
Ukrainian architect Valerii Shcherbak, 32, admires the palace's architectural detail and its popularity with tourists.
"This is history and we need to respect it," he said, noting that many Soviet-era buildings in Ukraine have been destroyed. "What happened in the past should be kept for history, not destroyed."

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Putin cancels navy celebration parades as Kyiv strikes near St Petersburg

Russia was forced to downsize its celebration parades honouring the navy on Sunday amid security threats from continuing Ukrainian drone attacks, Kremlin officials said. Annual parades of Russian warships to mark the Navy Day were cancelled in St Petersburg, in the Kaliningrad region on the Baltic and in the far-eastern port of Vladivostok. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the cancellation of the parades and said it was 'linked to the overall situation, security reasons, which are above all else'. Russian forces downed nearly 100 Ukrainian drones over several regions from Saturday night into Sunday. The drone threat also forced the shutdown of St Petersburg Pulkovo airport, leading to the suspension of dozens of flights in the early hours of Sunday. Meanwhile, Poland scrambled its warplanes in the early hours of Monday to protect its airspace after Russia launched missiles at western Ukraine, near the border with the Nato country. As of 1.30am local time, most of Ukraine remained under air raid alerts.

Jennifer Lopez's skirt DROPS to the floor in shock wardrobe malfunction on stage: 'I'm glad I had underwear on'

Jennifer Lopez didn't let anything like a little wardrobe malfunction upset her performance in Warsaw on Friday. The artist, 56, who has split from her record label, was in the middle of a wardrobe change when she was called back out on the stage so the crowd could sing Happy Birthday to her. The singer, who is traveling on her Up All Night: Live in 2025 tour, was wearing a gold sequined triangle bikini top and fiddling with her gold fringe skirt when she came out on stage. A backup dancer got behind her to attach it, and it seemed to work, for a couple of seconds at least. As she walked across the stage saying 'Thank you Warsaw,' the flimsy garment dropped to the floor. Lopez looked shocked for a second, but quickly recovered and took a sort of victory lap around the stage in her high waist gold lamé bottom and sparkling boots. She tried to attach it again, with the help of the dancer, as her crew broke out into the Stevie Wonder hit Happy Birthday. Wonder originally wrote the song to advocate for the establishment of a holiday honoring the late civil rights legend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Jenny on the Block singer doubled over laughing as her helper struggled, again, to attach the hooks on the skirt. As the song concluded she grabbed the offending piece of clothing and threw it into the crowd. 'I'm glad that they reinforced that costume,' the MTV Video Music Award winner said. 'I'm glad I had underwear on,' she admitted, adding, 'I don't usually wear underwear.' She also told the person who caught the skirt, 'you can keep it. I don't want it back.' Fans who saw the video on YouTube were eager to share their good wishes and admiration for the Billboard Icon Award winner. 'Unstoppable Force ! Happy Birthday Icon, wrote one admirer, and then using some of JLo's own words to describe the situation. 'One of my favourite quote of JLo is failure isn't falling down flat on your face failure is stopping !!!' 'Fantastic, thank you for the surprise,' wrote another. JLo was set to perform in Bucharest on Sunday night and then take off for Abu Dhabi. The tour was scheduled to conclude in Almaty in Kazakhstan on August 10.
