Jamie George full of pride in Lions return despite ‘midweek massive' role

Jamie George full of pride in Lions return despite ‘midweek massive' role

The Guardian13 hours ago
There are plenty of reasons to question the British & Irish Lions' clash with a First Nations & Pasifika XV on Tuesday. To wonder what the point of it is, sandwiched between the first two Tests. That the Lions have shipped in five players specifically to keep their frontline stars wrapped in cotton wool suggests it is little more than an inconvenience to the tourists. Then you listen to Jamie George explain what it means to him to represent the Lions again and it immediately changes your perception. Bin juice has never tasted so good.
It took George 47 hours to make the journey from San Juan, not far from the Andes in Argentina, where he was preparing to represent England against the Pumas, to Brisbane to join up with the Lions before the first Test. Devastated at missing out on the initial squad, George jumped at the chance to come in as cover for Luke Cowan-Dickie, who is still recovering from concussion.
A flight to Buenos Aires was followed by another to Rio de Janeiro, another to Dubai and then on to Brisbane. 'I gave the world a good lap,' he says, explaining that the gangster series Mobland and 'some pretty horrific moves' including the Kevin Costner golf classic Tin Cup kept him busy while sticking to a strict sleep regime prescribed by the Lions.
George Jamie Osborne – cover for Garry Ringrose – as well as Thomas Clarkson, Darcy Graham, Ewan Ashman, Gregor Brown and Rory Sutherland all make the squad for Tuesday's fixture, along with Blair Kinghorn who returns after a knee injury. Andy Farrell insists he is keeping an open mind when it comes to selection for the second Test but in reality only Kinghorn and Ringrose, who is on the bench, have a realistic shot at making the XV. Owen Farrell is captain and he could conceivably make the 23, as could George. On the whole, however, those selected are the dirt-trackers, the bin juice or the midweek massive.
For his part, George is determined to make the most of his second chance on his third Lions tour. A cancelled flight delayed the arrival of his father, Ian, whose presence in Melbourne gives the fixture extra meaning to George. He lost his mother, Jane, to cancer last year and George cites having his parents on the 2017 tour of New Zealand as one of his happiest memories.
'My old man is on the way,' said George. 'Obviously it's sad that my mum is not going to be able to be here but being able to do stuff like this for people like my old man, giving him the opportunity to travel around Australia, to watch his son play for the Lions. That's the special bit about what I do and it's my biggest motivation about why I do what I do.
'It's emotional to be back out there because I never thought this opportunity was going to come, however many weeks ago the squad was announced and I was heartbroken and now I've got the opportunity to pull the jersey on again and it might be the last time, it might not be. But I'll try to put my best foot forward and play like it's the last time and when I do it like that I want to make people proud, I want to do the jersey proud and do everything I possibly can to win in a Lions jersey because I think international selection is one thing but winning as a Lions is different so that's what I'm here to do.
'It's absolutely about gathering momentum for the boys in the Test team and giving them confidence in terms of what they see from us. Of course it's an amazing opportunity to put your name forward for Test selection. That's the way that people have got to see it.'

George is a huge cricket fan and so the significance of the Lions playing the second Test at the MCG is not lost on him. The 34-year-old hooker admits that attending a Boxing Day Test is 'bucket list' and did not rule out leading a 'sprinkler' celebration, as Graeme Swann did when England retained the Ashes in the 2010-11 contest in Melbourne.
'What a great shout that is,' he added. 'I see myself as a sort of Graeme Swann figure. Similar characters, both talented blokes. It could happen, yeah, who knows. Bucket list stuff for me is watching the Boxing Day Test there. I'd be getting stuck in once I've retired. In the Barmy Army, 100%, I'd be in the mix, shirt off, I'd have anywhere between 15 and 20 pints. A tattoo of Joe Root on one arm, Ben Stokes on the other.
'How good is it going to be? 100,000 people at the MCG. I thought the atmosphere was good at the weekend but from experience it just goes like that [upwards] in the second and third Tests.'

Aussie family in hysterics over aunt's embarrassing mistake with common household item: 'Expensive error'

A woman captured the amusing moment her aunt mistook an Apple MacBook for a chopping board - leaving the family in hysterics. Bree Tomasel, an Aussie radio host living in New Zealand, shared the video on social media showing her Aunty Shirl being called out by a family member for slicing papaya on his brand new, expensive laptop. 'Jesus Christ that's my laptop, it's not a freaking cutting board,' he screamed. 'Christ. It's a bloody brand new MacBook.' Aunty Shirl's jaw dropped the moment she realised her mistake as the man shook his head in disbelief and jokingly said, 'Hopeless'. Bree can be heard laughing uncontrollably behind the camera as her mum Di gasped in horror: 'Oh my God'. Despite the mix-up, Aunty Shirl couldn't contain her laughter as everyone saw the funny side. 'Aunty Shirl used a MacBook as a cutting board... accidentally,' Bree said in the caption, adding the hashtag: #okboomer. The video was originally posted in December 2019 but it has been making the rounds on social media again in recent days, racking up more than 1.3 million views. 'That cutting board had to cost a lot,' one suggested. 'Omg I can't stop laughing,' another shared. 'Lucky you caught her before she chucked it in the dishwasher,' one joked. 'Cutting Edge Technology,' another joked in light of the situation. 'In her defense, it literally has an apple on it,' one pointed out. The video has gone viral once again, with Specsavers chiming in: 'Hey', a nod to its famous slogan, 'Should've gone to Specsavers.' Many saw the funny side to the situation, with one suggesting: 'At her age she can do whatever the heck she wants she deserves it! Keep laughing, it keeps you young.' Others pointed out the laptop should never have been left on the kitchen counter. 'Why did you leave it on the kitchen bench in the first place?' one asked, laughing. 'To be fair, that's a kitchen not an office,' another added. Meanwhile, many people shared their own experiences of family members, friends or acquaintances mistaking everyday items. 'One of my uncles did this after he saw an apple and assumed it was a chopping board,' one revealed. 'An old lady put a burning candle on my sister's iPad once because she "thought it was a mirror",' another shared.

Footy star makes shock announcement after he became the AFL's most inspirational story by beating cancer twice

One of the bravest and most resilient AFL competitors of all time has called it a day, with father time finally catching up to Carlton superstar Sam Docherty. The midfielder has announced that he will play his 184th and final AFL game when Carlton play Hawthorn on Thursday night at the MCG. The former skipper will be further acknowledged with a tribute at the club's next home game against the Gold Coast Suns on August 9. But after 183 AFL matches and a host of courageous comebacks, the 31-year-old has decided to call time on his decorated career immediately. When it comes to overcoming adversity to return to footy, Docherty wrote the book. Docherty has bravely battled testicular cancer on two separate occasions. He was first diagnosed in 2020 and underwent surgery and treatment before returning to AFL. In 2021, he revealed the cancer had returned, forcing him into another round of chemotherapy. Despite the physical and emotional toll, Docherty remained a key leader at Carlton throughout his recovery. On top of that, Docherty ruptured his ACL in Round 1 of the 2024 season at the Gabba, marking his third serious knee injury. Incredibly, he completed a full rehabilitation in just six months, hitting every milestone to give himself a shot at finals. Carlton confirmed his return for the elimination final against Brisbane - 183 days after the injury, and back at the same ground. Despite the high stakes, Docherty gathered 16 disposals, three intercepts, and even kicked a goal. His comeback was seen as one of the most courageous moments of the AFL season. Even as Carlton has faltered and stumbled its way through the 2025 season, Docherty has maintained strong form, consistently averaging just under 20 disposals per game - his highest career average to date. He's also been instrumental around stoppages, contributing around 5.9 clearances per match. After all the ups and downs, Docherty said he was just happy he was able to live his childhood dream. 'When I was a kid my entire family used to climb into a van and drive from Phillip Island to the MCG for Round 1 every year,' he said. 'For me to get the chance to go on and play in those games, and also captain the club that I grew up supporting – I can honestly say it's a dream come true. 'To have built the most incredible friendships over the last 14 years which I will take with me for the rest of my life, I am so incredibly thankful and I appreciate everyone who has supported me through it all.' Docherty said it was the connections he had made during his time in the sport that he would value the most. 'Perspective is such a valuable thing, and that is what I am most grateful for in my career,' he said. 'When my career started I thought a footballer had to define themselves by the accolades they achieved: while I am certainly grateful for those that have come my way, I will leave this game with so much more. 'The experiences I have had not just in my football career, but in life, have moved the goalposts for me – while there has been no shortage of challenges, because of what I have been through I have been allowed to meet so many amazing people and have had the opportunity to have an impact far greater than kicking or handballing a football ever could. 'My wife Nat has been my rock through everything: I knew when I faced every challenge, we would be doing it together. I cannot thank her enough for her support and I can't wait to begin the next chapter of our lives together with Ruby and Myles.' Coach Michael Voss praised the resilient midfielder for overcoming every challenge that came his way. 'For every challenge Sam has faced, he has turned it into a triumph,' Voss said. 'I still remember clear as day the first face-to-face conversation I had with Sam at the back end of 2021: we went for a walk and he told me he was going to play in Round 1 in a few months' time. 'To see him defy the odds and do that, to kick that goal against the Tigers – that typifies what a remarkable mindset he has. 'He has captained our club, won a best and fairest, All Australian and been a sounding board for so many of our younger players, and all those things only tell half the story of the Sam Docherty impact.

Double delight for Matildas fans as two of the team's stars drop huge news about their love lives

Matildas fans are cheering this week after the heartwarming news that both Clare Wheeler and Alex Chidiac have experienced happy milestones with the loves of their lives. Wheeler, who plays for Everton in the UK, announced her engagement to partner Jeremy with an Instagram post on Monday. Sharing a photo of herself showing off a sparkling ring alongside Jeremy on an Italian beach, Wheeler captioned the photo with six digits: '17.07.25'. The news sparked a wave of Australian teammates rushing to congratulate the newly engaged couple. Mary Fowler posted: 'Yayyy congrats you cuties.' Hayley Raso wrote: 'No way, this is sooooo beautiful. Congrats you two.' Teagan Micah posted: 'Screaming! So happy for you both.' Meanwhile, Melbourne Victory star Chidiac tied the knot with her long-term partner Erin. The A-League star posted a series of photos from the ceremony at the Sun Theatre in Melbourne's inner-west, which left her Matildas teammates overjoyed. 'Congratulations you two! Looked amazing,' posted Courtney Vine. 'Love it Chids, so happy for you both,' wrote Emily Gielnik. The dual celebrations come at an interesting time for the Matildas after some mixed results so far in 2025. However, new coach Joe Montemurro is confident the team will be ready for the 2026 Asian Cup. 'I've had less time to prepare teams for big tournaments,' Montemurro said earlier in the month. Chidiac, who plays for Melbourne Victory, also received many well wishes from teammates 'The good thing about it, we're going to have a lot of players who are in season [for the next window], so they're going to be at least physically - and from a rhythm perspective - in tune. 'That was the biggest thing over the last 20 days - you saw the players, the rhythms were up, down, everywhere. 'All of them had to be managed physically. 'We won't have that problem [next time]. So at least we can go forward with players that are ready to go.'
