Cooper Flagg returned for the second half of Duke victory despite injury to his eye
'As a basketball player, you don't think about injuring your eye,' Scheyer said. 'That doesn't cross your mind. I had never seen him look scared. I thought he was scared at first, rightfully so, because you don't know how serious or permanent. … I was really nervous about him."

Flagg sat out more than 11 minutes to end the half, while the team's eye doctor checked on him. He was back on the court for the first 12 minutes of the second half, finishing the game with 16 points on 5-for-9 shooting. He wasn't made available to speak to reporters after the game.
'He had some vision issues in the first half and tested it out and he said he was good to go, and he was. … He's so tough,' Scheyer said. 'His mom is yelling at him to rebound and defend if he's going back in the game, so I didn't have to say a whole lot.'
Classmate Kon Knueppel said he was surprised Flagg was in action for the second half.
'To see him go down and stays down that worries you a little bit,' Knueppel said. 'Just a couple of scratches on his face.'
For James, it was another example of the aura around Flagg.
'That's not the craziest thing we've seen him do all year,' James said. 'We've seen him do crazier things. That's what makes him who he is.'

Earlier, Flagg made a move toward the lane and was fouled by Florida State's Jerry Deng. Alier Maluk, a 7-foot freshman, also struck Flagg on the face during the sequence.
Flagg, who's considered the potential No. 1 overall draft selection for the NBA, walked gingerly off the court with the aid of teammate Mason Gillis and trainer Jose Fonseca with 11:27 remaining. Duke led, 14-11, at the time.
Flagg, a 6-foot-9 phenom, had just returned to the game after being treated on the bench by Fonseca for an apparent cut on his face.
Flagg exited the gym for additional evaluation before returning to the bench a few minutes later. But on the next timeout, he didn't join the rest of the Blue Devils in the huddle around Scheyer. He was cheering from the bench as the Blue Devils extended their double-digit lead. Then with about 5½ minutes on the clock in the half, he exited the gym again and returned to the bench a few minutes later.
Duke led, 47-30, at the break.
Flagg entered the game averaging 19.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists.
Duke was already without starting point guard Tyrese Proctor, who sustained a knee injury Tuesday night at Miami, and injured backup forward Maliq Brown,

Washington basketball big man Hannes Steinbach named No. 3 international recruit
247Sports has updated its international basketball recruiting rankings to Washington's benefit. Big man Hannes Steinbach is now the third-highest composite-rated international recruit in the incoming class of 2025, behind guards Dame Sarr (Duke) and Neoklis Avdalas (Virginia Tech). Steinbach is now also the No. 68 recruit in the class, which boosts Washington's composite rank to No. 15 in the country. Steinbach has exploded onto the American basketball radar since debuting for Wurzburg in the Bundesliga in September 2024. He averaged 7.2 points and 5.8 rebounds in 31 regular season appearances, but stepped up when the lights got brighter. His averages jumped to 14.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game in 10 postseason appearances. This summer, Steinbach also led Germany to a silver medal in the U19 World Championships, averaging 17.2 points and 14 rebounds a game and making the All-Tournament team. Steinbach and the Germans lost to now-fellow Husky JJ Mandaquit and the United States in the gold medal contest. Washington is now in the top 15 of both the composite prep and transfer ranks, according to 247Sports. Their prep class of Steinbach, Mandaquit, Jasir Rencher, Courtland Muldrew, and Mady Traore (from junior college) is No. 15. The transfer class of Desmond Claude and Wesley Yates III (USC), Christian Nitu (Florida State), Bryson Tucker (Indiana), Jacob Ognacevic (Lipscomb), Quimari Peterson (East Tennessee State), and Lathan Somerville (Rutgers) is ranked No. 13 in the country. Steinbach is expected to compete with Ognacevic, the reigning ASUN Player of the Year, for a starting job in the frontcourt this season. It's much more likely that the German will be a part of a potentially electric bench unit that could also include returning sophomore guard Zoom Diallo. Washington opens the basketball season with an exhibition against UNLV on October 19 before beginning the season in earnest with a showdown against Arkansas Pine Bluff on November 3.

Sixers guard Jared McCain goes No. 3 overall in 2024 NBA re-draft
The Philadelphia 76ers got themselves a steal in the 2024 NBA draft when they landed Duke guard Jared McCain with the No. 16 overall pick. The 6-foot-3 guard was showing off his full arsenal as he was in the running for Rookie of the Year before suffering a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee. In 23 games as a rookie, McCain was terrific averaging 15.3 points and shooting 38.3% from deep. He had scoring games of 34 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers, 29 against the Orlando Magic, and back-to-back 20-plus point games against the Miami Heat and Memphis Grizzlies. He was impressive as a first-year player. Sam Vecenie of The Athletic put together a re-draft of 2024 with McCain being selected No. 3 overall by the Houston Rockets: McCain only got to do it for about a month while the 76ers were dealing with injuries, but no player flashed more upside as an offensive weapon last season than him. From Nov. 8 until Dec. 4, he averaged 21.7 points, three rebounds and 3.2 assists while shooting 47 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3 and 85 percent from the line in 13 games. And these were games at the beginning of the season when teams were still highly competitive, as opposed to some of the late-season runs we saw after a large portion of teams were out of contention. We know he will likely develop into one of the NBA's truly elite shooters, with pristine mechanics and superb touch. However, his ability to create and attack for himself stood out and gave him what looks to be serious upside long term. As the Sixers prepare for the 2025-26 season, the focus will be on getting everybody healthy and on the floor together. As long as Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey are on the floor, then they will certainly have a chance. The health of McCain will be a factor for Philadelphia as well due to his offensive ability.
