The Philadelphia Phillies were already short in the bullpen after Jordan Romano struggled at the start of the season. With Jose Alvarado's suspension, the bullpen is one man shorter.
A solution for the Phillies could be across the state in Pittsburgh as the Pirates continue to struggle. David Bednar is reportedly being eyed up by several teams, according to Bob Nightengale.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 14: David Bednar #51 of the Pittsburgh Pirates in action against the New York Mets at Citi Field on May 14, 2025 in New York City. The Pirates defeated Mets 4-0. More"Teams are scrambling to bolster their bullpens with the influx of injuries around baseball," wrote Nightengale. "The top targets: Kyle Finnegan of the Nationals; Felix Bautista, Seranthony Dominguez and Gregory Soto of the Orioles; David Bednar and Dennis Santana of the Pirates and Anthony Bender of the Marlins."
While Santana is mentioned as well for the Pirates, Bednar is expected to be the bigger prize as a result of being a two-time All-Star. The Pirates closer holds a 5.17 ERA entering Monday, but that is largely due to being awful earlier in the season.
Bednar has allowed just five runs in his last 11 outings, totaling 9 2/3 innings. Being sent to Triple-A Indianapolis allowed him to reset, and the Pirates are seeing performances they are used to seeing from Bednar.
The 30-year-old closer would be owed the remainder of $5.9 million by the Phillies this season before heading to his final year of arbitration next season. With the market likely to shift to a sellers' market once again, the Phillies may have to give up more than they would like for Bednar or any closer.
Pittsburgh would love to pry away Mick Abel from the Phillies, but the Pirates have a plethora of pitching depth in the minors themselves. Expect the Pirates to be asking for outfielder Justin Crawford (Phillies No. 3 prospect) as the starting piece.

Caitlin Clark Issues Apology To WNBA Fan After Pregame Accident
Caitlin Clark Issues Apology To WNBA Fan After Pregame Accident originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Caitlin Clark has been forced to watch the Indiana Fever from the sidelines over their last three games, still dealing with a quad strain that will keep her out at least one more. Advertisement Going into Tuesday, the Fever were riding a three-game losing streak, but that came to an end after an 85-76 win over the Washington Mystics. With Clark watching from the bench, Indiana turned to fellow All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell for the bulk of the scoring, notching 24 points on 7-of-14 shooting, two rebounds and three assists. Even though Clark is dealing with a multi-week injury, that didn't stop her from having some fun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Before Tuesday's game, she was seen playfully bouncing a ball up and down. Advertisement The former Iowa Hawkeyes star went to retrieve the ball as Sophie Cunningham, also sidelined with a right ankle injury, looked on. After stepping back onto the court, Clark turned and apologized to the fan for the accidental bounce. "Sorry," Clark said with a smile on her face. Clark was able to play in the Fever's first four games of the 2025 WNBA season, leading them to a 2-2 record. In those contests, she is averaging 19.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 9.3 assists. With Clark and Cunningham both sidelined, the Fever brought in guard Aari McDonald to fill a roster spot, and she stepped up against Washington as well. McDonald tallied seven points, five assists and three steals, making a strong case for a permanent place on the team. Advertisement The Fever will embark on a road trip to battle the Chicago Sky on Saturday, a game Clark will miss. However, she could potentially return in the following matchup against the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday. Padres Held Call With Red Sox Regarding Jarren Duran Trade, Second MLB Insider Reports
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Since Monday, Boston Red Sox fans have been all abuzz with a rumor that the San Diego Padres are attempting to make a trade for Boston's 2024 All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran. The buzz started with a report by Padres correspondent Dennis Lin of The Athletic, who noted that San Diego had first tried to get Duran prior to last season. With an offensive disaster in left field — Padres left fielders rank second-worst in MLB with a combined .533 OPS — San Diego president of baseball operations A.J. Preller is once again setting his sights on Duran as he searches for some way to improve the position, Lin reported. MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - MAY 28: Jarren Duran #16 of the Boston Red Sox poses for a photo with the Wally Home Run Head in the dugout before a game against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on May 28, 2025. More Maddie Malhotra/BostonThe following day, a veteran Boston baseball writer said he had independently confirmed with "an industry source" that Preller did, in fact, call the Red Sox to inquire about Duran's availability. But that writer, MassLive Red Sox columnist Sean McAdam, went on to say that while the Padres' interest in Duran is real, the Red Sox appear far less enthusiastic about parting with their 28-year-old leadoff hitter, who still has three years of team control after this one remaining before he hits free agency. More MLB: Watch: Tempers Flare Between Red Sox, Angels as Multiple Players, Coaches Involved "While Duran may represent the perfect fit for the Padres — relatively affordable for a team currently not in position to add much to its payroll," McAdam wrote, "the same can't be said from the Red Sox' perspective." Duran through the first two months of the season has lagged somewhat behind his pace from last season, particularly in May when the entire Red Sox team hit a slump and won just 11 games while dropping 17. Last season, Duran posted an OPS of .724 in April and March, and .767 in May. This year, those numbers are .762 and then, in May, .697. But it was in June that Duran really started to put together his All-Star credentials last year, hitting .360 with seven home runs, nine stolen bases and a sparkling 1.063 OPS for the month. While this June is just getting started, Duran through the first three games was showing signs that this is indeed his favorite month, with five hits including four doubles in 15 plate appearances, and a .933 OPS. It would not be surprising, then, if the Red Sox wanted to wait a few weeks to evaluate what Duran's performance actually looks like this season, before deciding whether to part ways with him. Saquon Barkley says his eventual retirement will probably be 'out of nowhere'
Saquon Barkley says his eventual retirement will probably be 'out of nowhere' Show Caption Hide Caption Five NFL games we can't wait to watch in the 2025 season The NFL schedule for the 2025-2026 season has been released. Here are a few games on our must-watch list. Saquon Barkley isn't hanging up his cleats yet, but don't expect to have a warning before he does. The Philadelphia Eagles running back dazzled during his first season in the City of Brotherly Love, playing a big role in delivering the second Super Bowl victory in franchise history. During the June 4th episode of the "Green Light with Chris Long" podcast, Barkley made a different headline this time after he was asked about retirement. The former Eagles defensive end, Long, posed the question about how the star running back will one day walk away from the game. "I'll probably be one of those guys that it'll be out of nowhere," Barkley said. "I'll probably just wake up one day, whether it's next year or two years or four years, and just be like, 'Yeah, it's over.'" While it seems unlikely that retirement could come in the near future for Barkley, it could sound alarms in Philadelphia given the recent run of players calling it an early career. Most recently, it was 29-year-old Frank Ragnow that opted for retirement. The now-former Detroit Lions center was arguably the best in the sport at his position, but said he plans to prioritize is health now. In terms of passion for the game, however, Barkley doesn't envision losing that anytime soon. "I don't think I will ever lose that passion," Barkley said. "I'm just a competitor." He added that the competitive nature will always be there, but likened his eventual retirement to Barry Sanders, who shockingly stepped away from the game after just 10 seasons. The Lions Hall of Fame running back retired at age 30. "One of my favorite players of all time, probably my favorite player of all time, is Barry Sanders, so probably similar to that," Barkley said. "Maybe one day it'll be out of nowhere. I'll probably be ballin' and just be like, yeah, call it quits." Barkley has certainly achieved plenty in his career to this point. He has won a Super Bowl and was named an All-Pro, the Offensive Rookie of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and selected to the Pro Bowl three times. In 2024, he was just 101 yards away from setting the NFL's all-time single season rushing record. Despite that lengthy list of accomplishments, Barkley is still just 28 and only has seven seasons under his belt. If Barkley is using Sanders as a reference, that means he feels he still has some unfinished business – even if he's already checked off most of the boxes.
