PM meets Chen Wenqing in Budapest

Budapest Times27-05-2025

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán met Chen Wenqing, Secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the Chinese Communist Party, in Budapest on Friday morning.
The prime minister said the stability of Hungarian-Chinese relations is greatly valued in the current challenging global economic environment. 'Hungary's position is that Europe's competitiveness is served by cooperation with China and strengthening connectivity, rather than an artificial separation of East and West,' PM Orbán said.
In 2024, China was the most important foreign investor in Hungary in terms of investment volume, Orban said. 'Chinese companies such as CATL, Semcorp, EVE Power or Sunwoda operate in our country and they significantly contribute to the performance of the Hungarian economy,' the prime minister added.

Orbán: War in Ukraine will be ‘longer and more brutal' than anticipated

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán warned that the war in Ukraine would be 'longer and more brutal' than anticipated at the start of the year, and 'we must be ready for intensified covert operations, smear campaigns and war propaganda against Hungary'. In a post on Facebook, PM Orbán announced that he has convened a meeting of the Defense Council for this afternoon, saying 'we must face the fact that transatlantic unity has sharply deteriorated', and referring to the recent intensification of armed action. The prime minister said there was a wide gulf between 'peace-oriented forces' led by US President Donald Trump and leaders in Brussels and Kyiv, who want to prolong the war'. Hungary, he added, must stay on the side of peace, 'even if this means disputes with Brussels will become louder'. 'We must prepare Hungary for attacks with double the force because Hungary is an ally of President Trump,' he wrote, warning of 'intensified covert operations, smear campaigns, and war propaganda against Hungary'. The prime minister concluded: 'We are ready to and will defend Hungary and Hungarian families!'

Palkovics: Hungary's National Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence is among country's top research institutions

László Palkovics, the government commissioner for artificial intelligence (AI), said Hungary's National Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence (MILAB) is among the country's top research institutions. Speaking at the SZTAKI (Computer and Automation Research Institute) in Budapest on Monday, Palkovics said MILAB is tightly linked to the Artificial Intelligence Coalition established by companies, universities, and scientific workshops in 2018, adding that it collaborates with other national laboratories that make use of AI. In a few weeks, the AI labs will have access to a dashboard showing who is doing what in the field of AI in Hungary, he said, adding that Hungary was at the forefront in this area. Hungarian research institutes, Palkovics noted, have been involved in artificial intelligence since the 1970s and 1980s, which is why Hungary is well-positioned in AI research and development. In 2020, Hungary was the fourth country in Europe, after Finland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, to develop an AI strategy at the government level. A revision of the strategy will be completed soon, he added. Laszlo Bodis, deputy state secretary for innovation, said AI was not just a technological innovation but also carried the potential for economic and social breakthroughs. MILAB, he added, is bringing together ten partners, and they are identifying how to harness AI for the benefit of the economy.

Hankó: Government values all Hungarian talent

Balázs Hankó, the minister for culture and innovation, said the Hungarian government values all Hungarian talent and is committed to running a talent management system that supports and improves Hungarian talent around the world. Speaking at the 'Talent's Talk 2025' event in Vienna, Minister Hankó said the government has allocated 400 million forints (EUR 990,000) for the next academic year's Stipendium Peregrinum scholarship scheme for Hungarian students who have applied to the world's best universities. Meanwhile, Minister Hankó said the Pannonia scholarship programme has given more than 3,000 young Hungarians the chance to gain experience at Europe's and the world's leading universities over the past semester. The government has also increased funding for young Hungarian researchers this year to 40 billion forints from 19 billion, the minister said. He noted that Hungary's aim is to have a university among the world's top 100 institutions by 2030, and for Hungary to be among the ten most innovative countries in the European Union.
