
BHU professor Santanu Kumar Swain appointed as Sikkim University VC
Gangtok, Aug 8 (PTI) The Centre has appointed BHU professor Santanu Kumar Swain as the vice chancellor of Sikkim University, a central varsity in the Himalayan state, an official said Friday.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Education on Thursday, Swain will serve a term of five years or until he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.
The appointment was made by President Droupadi Murmu in her capacity as the visitor of the central university.
Swain, who currently holds an academic position at Banaras Hindu University, brings with him extensive experience from one of India's leading institutions, the official said.
He will replace Professor Abhijit Dutta, who has been serving as the officiating VC of Sikkim University.
The ministry has formally notified all authorities concerned, including the President's secretariat, University Grants Commission (UGC), and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), regarding the appointment. PTI CORR BDC

List of deceased voters, those with multiple cards shared with parties: EC
New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) On a day the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to publish details of 65 lakh deleted names from the voters list of Bihar, the poll authority on Thursday said it has been sharing the list of deceased electors and those with multiple voter cards with political parties. It also said that the enumeration form of special intensive revision already asks for the Aadhaar number as a proof of identity. The EC said list of deceased voters at two places and permanently shifted is being shared with political parties since July 20. The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the poll authority to publish details of 65 lakh deleted names from the voters list with reasons of non-inclusion to enhance transparency in Bihar's special intensive revision of electoral roll. Unity key to making India worlds greatest nation: Ladakh MP
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) Ladakh MP Mohmad Haneefa on Thursday said all communities and religious groups contributed to India's freedom struggle, and unity is key to making India the world's strongest nation. In a message a day ahead of the 79th Independence Day, the Ladakh MP paid tributes to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation. 'I congratulate everyone on the 79th Independence Day. This freedom was not easy to get, many sacrifices were made by people," Haneefa told PTI. 'Every time there has been a war, our brave soldiers sacrificed their lives on the borders. I salute all the soldiers who have laid down their lives for the country," he said. Haneefa, who is from the Kargil region of Ladakh, said he has spent his childhood around soldiers of the Indian Army. 'I know in what situation our Army guards our borders. I come from a border area, Kargil in Ladakh, where we have spent our childhood amid soldiers — whether snow, heat or rain, they stay there guarding the border," he said. 'I appeal to the people, there are many sacrifices behind this freedom," he said. The Ladakh MP said people of all communities and religions have sacrificed for the nation. 'We should contribute towards protecting the unity in the country. To make it the world's strongest nation, we should rise above narrow differences," he said. CM Naidu directs officials to focus on boosting Andhras revenue
Amaravati, Aug 14 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday directed officials to focus on increasing the state's income, which is estimated to grow by eight percent in the current fiscal compared to 2024-25. Reviewing income-generating departments, Naidu stressed the need to prioritise Central funds and tax devolutions, according to an official release. 'Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to focus on income generation amid estimates that the state income is poised to rise by eight percent," the release quoted him as saying. He instructed officials to monitor tax collections through the 'Andhra Pradesh Tax Information System' and identified scope for higher revenue from services. He also urged them to explore all possible avenues to boost the state's income. Naidu further said the NDA alliance government places 'higher priority on public health" than on excise revenue.
