Fonterra forecasts milk price at $10 per kg of milk solids for 2025/26

Farmers are in line for another bumper dairy season after Fonterra revealed its opening forecast for the new season.
Fonterra's 2025/26 milk price forecast is $10 per kilogram of milk solids, driven by ongoing strong demand.
"Looking at the season ahead, we expect this demand to continue for now, but we acknowledge the ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and the potential for a wider series of outcomes across the season," chief executive Miles Hurrell said.
The uncertainty meant the new season milk price sat within a wide forecast range of $8 to $11 per kg of milk solids.
The mid-point of its current season milk price forecast range remained unchanged.
"Our forecast Farmgate Milk Price for the current season is driven by strong demand for our milk price reference products and our range is unchanged at $9.70-$10.30 with a midpoint of $10.00 per kg of milk solids," Hurrell said.

Fonterra] said its after-tax profit for the nine months ended April was $1.08 billion, up 11 percent from a year ago, while revenue rose 15 percent to $19.7b.
Excluding one-offs, its normalised profit was $1.16b which was equivalent to 70 cents per share, and an operating profit of $1.74b, up 18 percent.
The co-op also narrowed its year-end earnings range to 65 to 75 cents per share, at the upper end of the guidance provided in March of 55 to 75 cents per share.
"We've delivered strong shareholder returns through FY25, including a 22-cent interim dividend, and as we get closer to the end of the year, we are focused on maintaining this momentum," Hurrell said.
"We're also pleased to tighten our year-end forecast earnings within the existing range, given the strength of our third quarter performance," he said.
Fonterra said its focus has been implementing its plans to sell its consumer business, which delivered just over $3b in revenue (up 11 percent) and $319 million (up 28 percent) in operating profit for the nine months ended April.
Hurrell said work on the sale of the consumer business was ongoing.
"We have been thoroughly testing the terms and value of both a trade sale and initial public offering (IPO) as divestment options," he said.
"This work is on track as planned and we will seek farmer shareholder approval to divest through a vote in due course."
Hurrell said the results showed Fonterra had an "impressive business" as a business-to-business dairy company.
Fonterra's ingredients business delivered just under $13b (up 17 percent) in revenue for the period, with operating profit up 37 percent to $1.02b.
"If we divest our consumer business, we will still be a co-op with global reach and scale, and a diverse product mix sold to customers in more than 100 countries," Hurrell said.

Fall armyworm ( Spodoptera frugiperda ) was detected at a maize farm in Nadi. The insect is a significant pest for crops like maize and sweetcorn. Fiji's Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Vatimi Rayalu, visited two affected farms in Uciwai, Nadi, last month. He said fall armyworm is an enemy to Fiji's agricultural production. "It jeopardizes our food security, farmer livelihoods, and national economic growth," he said. "This threat must be dealt with through all means possible - from scientific control methods to grassroots community action." The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, Sugar Research Institute of Fiji and the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways have been leading the response. The response includes field surveillance, awareness sessions for farmers, and deployment of control measures where necessary. Rayalu emphasized that fighting the pest requires full participation from everyone involved in agriculture. "We are mobilizing resources and technical support, but success depends on every farmer, extension officer, and stakeholder playing their part." The ministry is urging all farmers to remain vigilant, report any signs of infestation, and adopt recommended control strategies without delay. The pest, which can munch its way through more than 350 plant species, is believed to have blown over to New Zealand from Australia after a cyclone in early 2022. After a year of battling the pest, the Ministry for Primary Industries and industry partners agreed in 2024 to close the response and shift the focus to long-term management.

A warmer winter is on its way, NIWA says

Photo: Tom Kitchin Electricity bills may deliver less of a hammering this winter if NIWA's outlook for the next few months comes to fruition. It shows temperatures from June to August are "very likely" to be warmer than average this winter, meaning fewer cold snaps and frosts than usual. NIWA National Climate Centre forecasting principal scientist Chris Brandolino said El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions in the tropical Pacific remained neutral at present, but there were "residual signals" that indicated weak La Nina conditions were persisting. Occasional La Nina-like atmospheric patterns might still emerge over the next three months, he said. "However, international guidance indicates about a 70 percent chance for the tropical Pacific to remain in an Enso-neutral state over the next three-month period." He said higher-than-normal atmospheric pressure was expected to the east of the country, leading to northeasterly flow anomalies that might shift to a more northwesterly direction towards the end of the three-month period. That means seasonal air temperatures are expected to be above average across all New Zealand regions for the winter season. "While cold snaps and frosts will occur, they are expected to be less frequent than usual." On the West Coast, Southern Alps and foothills, inland Otago, and Southland, temperatures were very likely to be above average, he said. Rainfall totals, soil moisture levels and river flows are about equally likely to be near normal or above normal. Temperatures were also very likely to be above average along coastal Otago, he said. "Rainfall totals are most likely to be in the near normal range, and soil moisture levels and river flows are about equally likely to be near normal or above normal." Brandolino said for the remainder of the calendar year, ENSO-neutral conditions were expected to persist. "The guidance available, however, suggests the possibility for La Nina conditions to return by summer 2025-2026." Five lessons from Moana Pasifika and Fijian Drua matches at the weekend

On Saturday night, the two Pasifika teams lost their final Super Rugby Pacific matches for the season. Moana were thrashed 64-12 by the Hurricanes in front of just over 20,000 fans at the Sky Stadium. It was a match they needed to win to claim a sixth-place finish in the competition. But they were not able to withstand the Hurricanes' pressure, and lost out of getting into the quarterfinals. However, they finished seventh for the first time in the competition since 2022, the year they made their debut. In Brisbane, the Fijian Drua went down 52-7 to the Queensland Reds. So what went wrong? What could the teams learn from their respective encounters? Are there lessons they can take forward to 2026? Here are five lessons from the team's performances. There were some who said Moana Pasifika might have peaked early, with their best effort coming against the Blues a month ago. That argument comes in light of the team's big losses to the Chiefs and the Hurricanes in the last two weekends. Assistant coach Stephen Jones believes they had prepared well for both matches and just could not click on the day. He said both the Chiefs and the Hurricanes were just too superior and suffocated Moana Pasifika. Did the two teams suffer from the lack of mental toughness? It was a question both head coaches, Drua's Glen Jackson and Moana's Fa'alogo Tana Umaga, were asked now and then. How are their players handling the pressure? Would they come back from losses they had suffered and be ready for their next matches? Both teams showed a lot of promise early in the season and while the Drua struggled from the midway mark, Moana Pasifika showed they had a lot in their tank and won six matches. But the North Harbour-based side struggled against the Chiefs and the Hurricanes. To many, it looked as if the side had not been able to handle the high of winning against the Blues. The Drua had a 'on and off' season, winning one and then losing three on the road. One thing both sides had in common was the fact that a lot of their players were still new to Super Rugby. They need to be playing throughout the season, in competition that will make them seasoned campaigners. Drua's Jackson said they will also look at those local players in Fiji playing in the Skipper Cup competition. He lamented earlier that the majority of his players are not able to play in the New Zealand National Provincial Championship (NPC). Moana Pasifika, on the other hand, have a number of young players in the NPC. They all need to be getting games consistently. One of the biggest problems for both teams has been the injuries suffered by some of their key players. It proved to be critical in their campaign for the top six. What will it mean moving forward? How can the two teams ensure their players are injury-free for the season they are needed for? It is an ongoing issue that they both will have to work on moving into the new season. Not just new recruits but those who can be identified as key players who can help both clubs improve. There have been talks of some star players joining Moana Pasifika, following the inspirational Ardie Savea. Whether the club will have the resources to do that is another story. With almost seven months to go before the pre-season begins again, it is therefore important that both teams get their talent identification going early. One thing is certain though: both the Drua and Moana Pasifika are here to stay and have key roles to play in keeping Super Rugby Pacific going.
