South Africa may not reach WTC final 2027, Sri Lanka have better chance: Aakash Chopra

India Today13 hours ago
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that Sri Lanka have a better chance than defending champions South Africa of reaching the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) final. The upcoming 2025-27 WTC cycle will see both teams face varied challenges, but Chopra feels the scheduling of the series favours the Lankans. It has been a decent start for Sri Lanka in the new cycle of the WTC. Playing against Bangladesh at home, they drew the first Test and beat their arch-rivals comprehensively with an innings victory in the second and the final match of the series. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said Sri Lanka's fixtures offer them a realistic path to reach the final.advertisement'Sri Lanka flatter to deceive. Their home series are against India, South Africa and Bangladesh. Their schedule is excellent because their away tours are to New Zealand, the West Indies and Pakistan. They should do well in the West Indies and Pakistan,' he explained.
The cricketer-turned-commentator added that even if Sri Lanka struggle in New Zealand, the strength of their home advantage could prove decisive in helping them reach the finale of the championship.'Even if they get stuck in the two away matches in New Zealand, they have India, South Africa and Bangladesh at home. It is not a bad draw at all. Sri Lanka actually have decent chances. I feel Sri Lanka's chances of qualifying are better than South Africa's,' Chopra observed.Back in 2023, the team had a golden opportunity to seal a spot in the finals. The Dimuth Karunaratne-led side had to beat New Zealand in both the tests to qualify for the summit clash at the Oval, London, but ended up losing both the matches. In the previous 2023-25 cycle, they finished sixth on the points table with a win percentage of 38.46.Tough sub-continent tours could keep SA out of WTC Final: ChopraAnalysing South Africa's schedule, Chopra noted that their home matches will be far from straightforward. 'Australia and England series will be tough, while hosting Bangladesh will be comparatively easy,' he admitted. The away leg looks equally challenging for the Proteas, with tours to Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka. All three are sub-continent series where spin is likely to play a key role, which Chopra believes will be tough for the defending champions.South Africa are coming off a high, having beaten Australia by five wickets in the 2023-25 WTC final to claim the World Test Mace. However, the road to another final will require them to adapt to spinning conditions away from home while still performing against competitive sides like Australia and England on home soil.- EndsMust Watch

Would have told Virat Kohli to retire after England Tests: Ex-India chief selector

Former India captain and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar has said the national selectors should have persuaded Virat Kohli to delay his retirement from Test cricket until after the recent five-match series in announced his decision to retire from Test cricket just days before the start of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, shortly after Rohit Sharma also retired from Tests. Their absence left India with a fresh leadership group under Shubman Gill, who impressed both as captain and batsman, steering the side to a 2-2 who served as chief selector from 2006 to 2008, said Kohli's experience could have been crucial in the series. "If I were the Indian chief selector, I would have persuaded Virat to bid goodbye to Test cricket after playing the England series. We needed his class and experience in this series," Vengsarkar told The Times of India. Kohli's record in England has been mixed. After a disappointing debut tour in 2014, he returned in 2018 to score 655 runs as captain. However, he struggled during the 2021-22 visit, which included the World Test Championship final. In total, he has scored 1,096 runs in 17 Tests in England at an average of a month after his shock announcement, Kohli finally spoke about his decision to retire from Test cricket during a charity event for former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh's foundation, YouWeCan. Explaining his choice, he said: "I just coloured my beard two days ago. You know it's time when you are colouring your beard every four days."Neither Kohli nor Rohit has played competitive cricket since the IPL 2025 season. With India not scheduled to play ODI cricket until the end of the year in Australia and South Africa, their extended absence has added to speculation about their international retired with 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, placing him fourth on India's all-time list behind Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar. As captain, he led in 68 Tests, winning 40 - the most by any Indian skipper and the fourth-best in is expected to return to action in a three-match ODI series against Australia in October, followed by a home series against South Africa.- EndsYou May Also Like

Asia Cup: Jasprit Bumrah in contention, Gill-Axar for vice captaincy says report

Shubman Gill is the flavour of the season after his stupendous show in the recent Test series against England but he will face a contender in Axar Patel for vice-captaincy in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup T20 scheduled in the UAE next pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is set to play in the tournament and might be rested for the opening Test against the West Indies in early Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is likely to select the squad for the Asia Cup on August 19 or 20 depending on when the Centre of Excellence's (CoE) Sports Science team sends the medical bulletin of all players, including that of skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who has already started batting at the nets in Bengaluru. There will be some tricky selection calls but the Indian selectors would certainly like to maintain continuity which has given them a lot of success from the time Suryakumar took over as T20 Axar was the designated vice-captain during India's last series against England at home, Gill was the deputy when Suryakumar was first appointed full-time skipper of the T20 squad in Sri Lanka last is understood that the selection committee won't be too keen to tinker with the set-up as Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya form a solid top five."Abhishek Sharma is world's No. 1 T20 batter in last ICC rankings. Sanju Samson has been fantastic last season with both bat and gloves. So it will certainly be a tough call but Shubman in current form (although in Tests) can't be ignored. He had a good IPL also. Problem for selectors is, there are too many performers at the top of the order," a BCCI source privy to developments told so many players in top-order, it would be very difficult to find a slot for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai KL Rahul, who is now the first choice keeper in ODIs, is unlikely to be considered as he doesn't bat in the keeper's slotWhile Samson is all but certain to be the first keeper, the choice for the second keeper's slot will be between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel. While Jurel was a part of the last T20 series, Jitesh had been impressive for RCB during their IPL winning campaign. He has also revelled in the role of a unlikely to be fit in timeWhile Hardik Pandya remains India's first choice white ball seam bowling all-rounder, Nitish Kumar Reddy, who suffered injury during the England series, is unlikely to get fit in time. Shivam Dube, who made a good comeback against England, is likely to find his place in the and Washington Sundar are set to be the other two spin-bowling all-rounders in the will be third seamer, Prasidh Krishna or Harshit Rana? The main bone of contention will be the seam-bowling attack where Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh have locked their slots. The third slot is a fight between Prasidh Krishna, who has 25 wickets in last IPL, and the burly Harshit Rana, who has ability to bowl some really heavy contenders: Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Verma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana/Prasidh Krishna, Hardik Pandya, Jitesh Sharma/Dhruv Jurel.- EndsMust Watch

KL Rahul's unique birthday wish for 'Ajja' Suniel Shetty

KL Rahul and Suniel Shetty (Image credit: KL's Instagram) NEW DELHI: India star batter KL Rahul on Monday shared a heartfelt post for his father-in-law and actor Suniel Shetty on his birthday. Rahul took to Instagram and posted a picture with Suniel and brother-in-law Ahan Shetty. "Happy happy birthday Ajja. Keep inspiring us with everything you do. And pls rest more," KL Rahul wrote. Rahul's wife Athiya also penned a loving note: "Happy birthday to the best father and now the best Ajja. We love you sooo much! Thank you for all that you are." Both Suniel and his son Ahan shared moments from the game as they celebrated India's historic win. Rahul himself had an impressive series in England, scoring 532 runs at an average of 53.20, including two centuries and two half-centuries. After India registered a 2-2 draw in the five-match series against England, Rahul said the result "will rank right at the top" among the biggest moments of Indian cricket, especially since it was achieved by a team that "wasn't given a chance" in the absence of giants like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma . Led by Mohammed Siraj's extraordinary bowling effort, which fetched him a five-wicket haul in the second innings, India scraped past England by six runs in the series-deciding fifth and final Test. The victory sealed the 2-2 draw in a hard-fought series that saw India repeatedly claw back from difficult situations. "We have seen India lift the World Cup, I mean nothing compares to lifting the World Cup. But so many doubts, so many questions from everybody about whether Test cricket will stay or not. I think both the teams and the way we've played in this series, I think we've answered that question," Rahul said at the post-match press conference. "For us as a team, that wasn't given a chance in this series. And for us to fight back and to fight in every game and to get a result which is 2-2 might seem like a drop. But for us and for Indian Test cricket going in the future, I think this will rank right at the top," he added. He expressed confidence that the Indian Test team will go on to win many more series "outside of India" and credited the entire squad. "For the start of the series, we had Virat Kohli retiring, Rohit Sharma retiring, we had Ashwin retiring. So three big names out of the roster in India's team," he pointed out. Poll How do you feel about KL Rahul's tribute to Suniel Shetty on his birthday? Very Heartwarming Somewhat Heartwarming Neutral Not Heartwarming at All Now a senior player, Rahul emerged as one of India's standout performers with 532 runs across the five Tests, forging a solid partnership with the young Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top. "Yeah, I think it hit me when I joined the team. I was here about two weeks earlier playing India A's and it didn't hit me back then. But once I joined the team and I looked around and I didn't have Rohit and Virat and Ashwin who I played all my cricket with... "Just to look around and not see them felt a bit weird. But yeah, that's when it hit me that everyone else is looking at me, coming to me to ask about English conditions, what they need to do, how they need to prepare." Rahul said he leaned on his experience to not only perform but also guide the younger players. "And that's when it hit me that, okay, I've stepped into a different role now and it's time for me to help the younger guys. Use all the experience I've had of playing Test cricket and international cricket over the years and really put my hand up and stand up for this team. "This moment almost feels like this is a young team that's going to stay there for a long time." While new skipper Shubman Gill topped the scoring charts with over 700 runs, Rahul wasn't far behind, providing stability at the top of the order with his calm and composed batting.
