Down extend Clare's wait for win in All-Ireland series as three goals inspire 17-point rout for Tailteann Cup holders
The Tailteann Cup holders made light work of Peter Keane's men at Cusack Park as the hosts failed to recover from a Munster final throttling by Kerry.
The Banner are in their third year in the Sam Maguire series but have yet to taste victory.
There was little suggestion that Down would inflict such a setback here but based on last year's NFL Division 3 meeting in Newry — which the Ulster men won 3-15 to 1-10 — it was a game fraught with danger.
Emmet McMahon kicked off the scoring for Clare but 13 minutes later, Down had 1-4 on the board with John McGeough netting.
The Banner rallied in the second quarter especially when Alan Griffin ended a confident Clare move with a major.

Pat Havern and Danny Magill were constant thorns in Clare's defence and both scored at will.
After 23 minutes, Down increased their lead to ten and Clare were barely hanging on.
Ryan McEvoy, Havern, and Danny Magill kept Down's score tally ticking over and with nearly ten minutes of injury time in the first half, the visitors struck four more with Havern hitting three and McGeough on the mark to leave the them 2-17 to 1-6 to the good at the break.
Clare now had the breeze but it was of little use as the Mournemen were in no mood to surrender ground. Mark McInerney led a mini-revival for the home team with five points, including a two-pointer, before Eoin Cleary added another score but the nearest the Banner got to their rivals was ten points.

Sub Caolan Mooney hit the third Down goal as Clare failed to score for 15 minutes before Emmet McMahon fired a two-pointer.
Up next for DOWN is a home battle with Leinster champions Louth a week on Saturday, while CLARE face a trip to Monaghan the following day.

Drogheda United paired with Shamrock Rovers in FAI Cup quarter-finals
Holders Drogheda United will take on Shamrock Rovers in the quarter-finals of the Sports Direct FAI Cup. The draw was made this afternoon with Kevin Doherty's side facing a tough task against the champions-elect Hoops. Stephen Bradley is eyeing a double and must overcome the side third in the Premier Division table as it stands. Elsewhere there is another all-Premier Division clash with old rivals Stephen Kenny and John Caulfield to meet again as St Patrick's Athletic host Galway United. Cork City face the long trip to Donegal to take on Finn Harps. Former Dublin footballer Michael Darragh Macauley steps down as CEO of Sanctuary Runners
The eight-time All-Ireland winner, who has worked for Dublin's Northeast Inner City (NEIC), took over from Sanctuary Runners' founder Graham Clifford a year ago. The former Dublin GAA star will conclude his time with the Sanctuary Runners in the coming weeks. 'I've had an amazing year at the helm of this very positive movement,' Macauley said. 'I've made the difficult decision to move on to other projects, but I am still very committed to the power of community integration through sport. 'Although I will no longer be Chief Executive, I plan to continue to show solidarity in my Sanctuary Blue and I truly value the great friendships I've made all around the country,' he added. Sharing the news on LinkedIn, he said it had been an 'absolute privilege' steering the blue ship for the past year. Sanctuary Runners was named 'Community Organisation of the Year' at this year's Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Awards under his stewardship. Anna Pringle, Chair of the Board of Sanctuary Runners, said: 'We have been honoured to have Michael Darragh as CEO during an exciting time for Sanctuary Runners where we have expanded our reach in Ireland and internationally. 'Michael Darragh brought a great understanding of community integration with him and built relationships throughout the Sanctuary Runners movement and helped us to grow. 'We wish him the very best in his future career.' The Board of Sanctuary Runners will now launch a recruiting process to appoint a new CEO.

Second edition of ‘1957' launched in Drogheda as Louth players unveil fundraiser
Prof. Cunningham, who grew up in Ballymakenny just outside Drogheda, is a distinguished figure in Irish medicine, having served as Consultant in Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at Beaumont Hospital and Professor of Anaesthesia at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland before retiring as Medical Director of Galway Clinic. Now living on the shores of Lough Corrib, he has never lost his deep affection for his native town and county. That connection inspired him to chronicle the year 1957, a landmark year in Louth and Irish sport and culture. It was the year the Wee County lifted the All-Ireland, Baltray's Philomena Garvey shone on the golfing stage, and Drogheda's Tony 'Socks' Byrne fought his way to international acclaim. Originally published several years ago, the book quickly sold out its first edition. The fresh launch comes at a poignant moment, with the current Louth senior football team bridging a 68-year gap earlier this summer by winning the Leinster Championship. Current players Conor Grimes and Tommy Durnin attended the event and received a rousing ovation when introduced by compere Gavin Duffy. Both spoke of the squad's joy at their Leinster triumph and their determination to build on that success. They also used the occasion to announce the launch of the Players Fund, a new initiative led by members of the squad to directly support the development and elite performance of the Louth senior football team. They acknowledged the financial pressures facing Louth GAA as the new stadium project progresses, and stressed that the fund will be player-driven, aimed at ensuring resources are available to sustain the team's upward momentum. The evening was rich in nostalgia, with footage shown of the 1957 All-Ireland final and of 'Socks' Byrne famously defeating Olympic gold medallist Dick McTaggart at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Welcoming the large crowd, Prof. Cunningham expressed his delight at the response his 'literary ramblings,' as he called them, had received from readers. He said it was a joy to see Louth football back on the rise and to have members of the current team present at the launch. He also reflected on the research behind the book, acknowledging those who had shared their memories and paying tribute to the many sporting heroes of 1957 who have since passed away. The event drew dignitaries and guests from across the sporting, medical and social worlds, along with many of Prof. Cunningham's friends. For those present, it was an evening of celebration – both of a year that still resonates deeply in local memory, and of the promise of a bright new chapter for Louth football.
