President Murmu honours Captain Deepak Singh with Shaurya Chakra
According to defence officials, Captain Deepak Singh was killed in action during the ongoing operation in Assar, Doda, in August 2024. He was from the 48 Rashtriya Rifles.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami paid heartfelt tributes to Captain Deepak Singh, expressing their deep condolences to his family. CM Dhami emphasised the heroism of Captain Singh and the significant impact of his ultimate sacrifice on the nation's spirit and the people of Uttarakhand.
'In August 2024, during an encounter with terrorists, despite being injured, he showed unmatched courage and attained martyrdom while protecting the nation till his last breath. The military land of Uttarakhand is proud of this brave son', said Dhami, taking to his Twitter(X).
President Droupadi Murmu conferred six Kirti Chakras, including four posthumous, and 33 Shaurya Chakras, including seven posthumous, to the personnel of the Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces and State/Union Territory Police during Phase-I of Defence Investiture Ceremony 2025 at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi on Thursday, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Defence.
The Gallantry awards were given to the personnel for displaying raw courage, unparalleled bravery and total disregard to personal safety in the line of duty, as per the ministry.
The bravery, which has been awarded, was displayed during various operations related to counter-terror/counter-insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir and the North-East. 'Dreaded terrorists were neutralised & apprehended during these operations, and arms & ammunition were recovered,' it added.
The Indian Navy officers led anti-piracy operations, resulting in the surrender of pirates and the rescue of hostages, while also demonstrating bravery during fire-fighting operations on a burning oil tanker, the statement added.
The statement added that the awardees from the Indian Air Force showed utmost courage in life-threatening circumstances during the rescue of aircraft while manoeuvring away from civilian areas to avoid any loss of life/property.
The gallant act of CRPF officers was performed in various operations in areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism. Maoist insurgents were apprehended and weapons recovered, it added. (ANI)

NCERT introduces modules on Operation Sindoor for school students
NEW DELHI: The National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced two special modules on Operation Sindoor, describing the military operation that struck at terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, 'a triumph of bravery, strategy, and innovation'. The modules also featured maps of target sites and photographs of destroyed Pakistani drones. The Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that killed 26 people was carried out on 'direct orders' by 'Pakistan's military and political leadership', the modules said, giving details of how the operation was planned. They also featured maps of target sites and photographs of destroyed Pakistani drones, and made references to India's air defence systems, including the S-400, which intercepted and neutralised enemy aircraft and drones. The module titled 'Operation Sindoor — A Saga of Valour' is meant for preparatory and middle stages (Classes 3 to 8), while 'Operation Sindoor—A Mission of Honour and Bravery' is for students at the secondary stage (Classes 9 to 12). NCERT modules are supplementary resources in English and Hindi that cover contemporary and culturally significant topics. They are separate short publications on specific topics that are not part of the textbooks but taught through projects, posters, discussions, and debates. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan with missiles and long-range weapons in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack. This triggered four days of hostilities that ended after the two sides reached an understanding on ending military actions on May 10. The module for the secondary stage said the country reacted in 'a very united way' after the terror attack in Pahalgam. 'Candlelight marches were held from across the country. Muslim communities in Hyderabad, Lucknow, and Bhopal wore black armbands and openly denounced the attack. In Kashmir, shopkeepers closed their shops in protest. Villages near the border demanded strong action and supported the Armed Forces,' it said. It added that the local population in Kashmir 'stood up and spoke against terrorists. Their response breaks stereotypes and shows the real voice of peace-loving people.' The modules also cite India's strong military responses — from the wars of 1947, 1965, 1971, and 1999 to the 2019 Balakot strikes and Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam attack — describing the latest Operation Sindoor as a decisive move against terrorism backed by the Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Pakistan's ISI. In June, defence minister Rajnath Singh said Operation Sindoor was the natural progression of the 2016 surgical strikes and the 2019 Balakot airstrikes in Pakistan, and it was conducted in a manner that forced Islamabad to ask for a ceasefire, articulating India's firm resolve against terror. Both modules start with quotes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In one, he described Operation Sindoor as 'a confluence of India's policy, intent, and decisive capability.' In the module for the secondary stage, PM Modi spoke about how Indian forces attacked terror hideouts in Pakistan and their training centres with precision. 'The terrorists had never imagined that India could take such a big decision. But when the country is united, endowed with the spirit of Nation First and national interest is paramount, then strong decisions are taken and results are achieved.' Former Northern Army commander Lieutenant General DS Hooda (retd) said, 'It is good that students, from an early age, learn about what the military has done—its achievements and how it has responded to the challenges we face. This will give them better exposure to the era, a deeper understanding of what we have been doing, and how India's independent history has evolved.'

Govt approves ₹62,000 crore deal to buy 97 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets
In a major boost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India in defence project, India on Tuesday cleared the project for buying 97 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force. The final approval for the acquisition of 97 LCA Mark 1A fighters was given by a high-level meeting today and will pave the way for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to produce the aircraft, defence sources told ANI. This will be the second order for the LCA Mark 1A fighters, as the government has already placed orders for 83 aircraft a few years ago for around Rs 48,000 crore. The programme will help the IAF to replace its fleet of MiG- 21s, which are finally being phased out by the government in next few weeks, they said. The indigenous fighter aircraft programme, fully backed by Defence Ministry and Air Headquarters is set to be a big boost for promoting indigenisation as well as give major business to the small and medium enterprises engaged in defence business across the country, they said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pushing for the revival of the HAL, which has bagged orders for building all types of indigenous fighter aircraft, helicopters, along with the engines for them under his government. The Prime Minister had also undertaken a sortie in the trainer variant of the indigenous fighter, which was first-ever sortie by the Prime Minister of India in any combat aircraft. The plan to acquire 97 more LCA Mark 1A fighter jets was also announced first by the then Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari on foreign soil in Spain when he told ANI about the mega plans to boost the indigenous fighter aircraft orders. The LCA Mark 1A plane has more advanced avionics and radars than the initial 40 LCAs being supplied to the Air Force. The indigenous content in the new LCA Mark1As is going to be more than 65 per cent. The programme has been the harbinger of the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives of the nation. More importantly, it is a flag bearer of India's self-reliance in the aerospace sector. The HAL is also set to bag deals for buying over 200 LCA Mark 2s and a similar number of fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft.
