President Murmu honours Captain Deepak Singh with Shaurya Chakra
New Delhi [India], May 23 (ANI): In a grand ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu honoured the bravery and supreme sacrifice of Captain Deepak Singh, a brave son of Uttarakhand, by conferring the Shaurya Chakra posthumously.
According to defence officials, Captain Deepak Singh was killed in action during the ongoing operation in Assar, Doda, in August 2024. He was from the 48 Rashtriya Rifles.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami paid heartfelt tributes to Captain Deepak Singh, expressing their deep condolences to his family. CM Dhami emphasised the heroism of Captain Singh and the significant impact of his ultimate sacrifice on the nation's spirit and the people of Uttarakhand.
'In August 2024, during an encounter with terrorists, despite being injured, he showed unmatched courage and attained martyrdom while protecting the nation till his last breath. The military land of Uttarakhand is proud of this brave son', said Dhami, taking to his Twitter(X).
President Droupadi Murmu conferred six Kirti Chakras, including four posthumous, and 33 Shaurya Chakras, including seven posthumous, to the personnel of the Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces and State/Union Territory Police during Phase-I of Defence Investiture Ceremony 2025 at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi on Thursday, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Defence.
The Gallantry awards were given to the personnel for displaying raw courage, unparalleled bravery and total disregard to personal safety in the line of duty, as per the ministry.
The bravery, which has been awarded, was displayed during various operations related to counter-terror/counter-insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir and the North-East. 'Dreaded terrorists were neutralised & apprehended during these operations, and arms & ammunition were recovered,' it added.
The Indian Navy officers led anti-piracy operations, resulting in the surrender of pirates and the rescue of hostages, while also demonstrating bravery during fire-fighting operations on a burning oil tanker, the statement added.
The statement added that the awardees from the Indian Air Force showed utmost courage in life-threatening circumstances during the rescue of aircraft while manoeuvring away from civilian areas to avoid any loss of life/property.
The gallant act of CRPF officers was performed in various operations in areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism. Maoist insurgents were apprehended and weapons recovered, it added. (ANI)

During his earlier visit, Rahul Gandhi urged the need for a caste census, while highlighting the importance of social justice. Gandhi's current visit comes ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, where the ruling National Democratic Alliance , led by the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) and the BJP, the Mahagathbandhan or the Grand Alliance) comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the INC, and other parties, are the main contenders. The last assembly elections were conducted in three phases from October to November 2020. The National Democratic Alliance secured 125 seats in the previous elections. The BJP won 74 seats, and the JD(U) obtained 43 seats. Meanwhile, the Mahagathbandhan, consisting of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and Left parties, secured 110 seats in the 243-seat legislative assembly.

So when the team tasted its maiden victory on June 3, emotions were bound to run high. But the stampede that unfolded later during the celebration at the Bengaluru stadium, killing 11 and injuring 47, showed a clear absence of communication and apparent abdication of duty, almost to the extent of criminality, which the club has now been accused of in the First Information Report (FIR). THE RCB BASH A video of a man lying breathless, another man slapping him, while the accompanying women trying cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) has gone viral. Visuals of a private security guard carrying a man on his shoulder or five volunteers carrying another person in haste as he was still breathing will haunt the nation. In a video, just before the stampede, loud cheering fans are seen gate crashing the stadium as the contingent of police personnel looks overwhelmed. THE MAHAKUMBH STAMPEDE On June 4, one visual stayed with me for a long time after the stampede was over. A small replica of the IPL trophy lay trampled amid hundreds of slippers in mud. A youngster, probably someone who idolises Kohli, came clutching it, sitting on top of his father's shoulder. But had to leave it in time to flee. Similarly, I remember a photo of a broken spectacle of a youngster left behind, trampled in mud on the night of January 30 this year at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. On the Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious days for the holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, a massive crowd swell between 1 am and 2.30 am resulted in at least 30 deaths and over 60 injuries. The stampede was triggered by an estimated 80-100 million devotees converging at the Sangam Nose, exacerbated by broken barricades and restricted access routes, leading to chaos and suffocation. Eyewitnesses reported devotees climbing over barricades and pushing, causing people to collapse. Just like the RCB event, the Maha Kumbh stampede too raised concerns about mismanagement, inadequate infrastructure, and prioritisation of VIP movements, with calls for better crowd control measures like pre-registration and staggered timings. Both tragedies are as real as it could get. They also bring out the exact same personal loss to which the political discourse remains largely unaffected. In Prayagraj, Karnataka's Saroja witnessed the death of four members of her family; Babita, a resident of Shivkuti in Prayagraj, barely evaded death by minutes after jumping off the barricades. There is no major difference between the two stampedes except that the first happened in a Congress-ruled state where Rajeev Shukla rushed to safeguard the government and the latter was in a BJP-ruled state where Ravi Shankar Prasad could smell a 'conspiracy", as he said in a Lok Sabha discussion on the issue on February 3. In what was seen as a highly irresponsible statement, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge claimed during a parliamentary debate on February 3 that 'thousands" had died in the Mahakumbh stampede. Days after the stampede, Jairam Ramesh accused the Uttar Pradesh government of hiding the true death toll. In India, lives are compensated with an amount the administration deems fit. On February 16, in the national capital, 18 people died in an overcrowded New Delhi Railway Station during a stampede. On July 2, 2024, 121 died at a stampede at a Satsang in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras. On the first day of the year in 2022, in Vaishno Devi, 12 people died due to a heavy influx of devotees that resulted in a stampede. Most of these victims are forgotten and reduced to just statistics. Their significance is limited to the tragedy, but their usage depends upon which political outfit is ruling the state. "Nothing short of state-sponsored man-made disaster": BJP' Shehzad Poonawalla slams Congress over Bengaluru RCB stampede
New Delhi [India], June 6 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Shehzad Pooonawalla on Friday alleged that the Bengaluru stampede was a state-sponsored man-made disaster and further held Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister to be directly responsible for the tragic incident. 'What we have seen in the Bengaluru stampede is nothing short of a state-sponsored man-made disaster for which the CM and Deputy CM are directly responsible. They are A1 and A2, but instead of taking accountability, we see that they constantly attempt to shift the blame. DK Shivakumar, just 24 hours ago, was saying that the Police have done a fantastic job, they have done an excellent job. He was blaming the crowd,' Poonawalla told ANI. Poonawalla further questioned the haste to arrange a big program for the RCB team in a short span of time and also quetioned the clearance given to the parade. 'We have seen the CM trying to indulge in whataboutery and within 24 hours now, to fix the responsibility on somebody, action has been taken on series of officers but no action on the political leadership. Was this RCB team a national team? Did it win a national competition? Then why was the haste there to arrange such a big programme within 24 hours? Did the Polic give the clearance for the programme in Vidhana Soudha? Who gave the clearance? Who was the one who was there with the team, receiving them at airport, kissing the trophy, holding the flag, trying to take the credit through photo-op and who took the decision to continue the celebration even when deaths were occurring?' the BJP spokesperson questioned. Stating that the blame game was another attempt by the state government to save their skin and find a scapegoat, Poonawalla questioned Congress national leader Rahul Gandhi on why there were not standards of accountability set on ministers. 'So, this is yet another attempt to save their own skin and to find a scapegoat. One should now ask the question from Rahul Gandhi, why don't you set the same standards of accountability on A1 and A2, Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar that you set on all others? They are trying to protect their skin and their responsibility by laying the blame at somebody else's doorstep,' he added. On June 4, eleven people died and more than 30 were injured in a stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy stadium as a huge crowd of nearly three lakh people had gathered to witness the victory celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru which won the Indian Premier League (IPL).
