The Chicago Air and Water Show returns in August—see who's included
The 66th edition will feature all the high-flying, heart-pounding military and civilian stunts you'd expect, and, best of all, it's completely free.
From 10:30am to 3pm both days, be dazzled as the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds headline the action, slicing across the sky in their F-16 Fighting Falcons. They're joined by the U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights, the U.S. Coast Guard Search & Rescue Demo and a fleet of crowd-pleasing performers from across the armed forces, including A-10s, C-17s, Ospreys, and KC-135s.
Civilian acts round out the show with aerobatic daredevils like Bill Stein Airshow, Kevin Coleman and the Warbird Thunder crew, plus stunt biplanes, mini jets and vintage aircraft performing choreographed chaos over the lakefront. And the Chicago fire and police departments get in on the action, too, with sea rescue demonstrations and helicopter flights, respectively.
The official event is Saturday and Sunday, but don't sleep on the Friday, August 15, rehearsal. For prime viewing, North Avenue Beach is the main stage, but anywhere along the lakefront delivers solid views, with the city skyline adding a cinematic backdrop.
There are plenty of options to make it a full day out. Why not snag a reservation at Offshore, the world's largest rooftop (as certified by Guinness World Records), for panoramic views? Or skip the crowds at North Avenue Beach for the less populated Northerly Island or Montrose Beach.
Bring blankets, snacks and sunscreen, and be ready to stake out your spot early. The city installs white and green pole markers in Grant Park for easy reference points and emergency info, so take note of your nearest one. Whether you're a local with nostalgia for the roar of jet engines or a first-timer looking to soak up one of summer's most quintessentially Chicago experiences, the Air and Water Show delivers patriotic flair, family-friendly thrills and more than a few moments that'll leave you looking up in awe.

Bill Bailey responds to 'toxic' Strictly Come Dancing claims with honest verdict
Former Strictly winner Bill Bailey says he never witnessed anything that let him to believe the BBC dance show had a 'toxic culture' during his time behind the scenes Strictly Come Dancing winner Bill Bailey has spoken out about recent allegations surrounding the show's off-camera culture, and says he never witnessed anything of concern during his time on the programme. The comedian and musician lifted the Glitterball trophy in 2020 alongside professional dancer Oti Mabuse, during a series which was heavily impacted by Covid-19 restrictions. Bill has addressed the ongoing controversy, insisting he was unaware of any behind-the-scenes issues. In recent years, the long-running BBC dance competition has been plagued by allegations of misconduct and bullying involving both contestants and professionals. It comes after Strictly's Anton Du Beke shared heartbreak over wife's 'cruel and inexplicable' diagnosis. Sharon Osbourne breaks down in tears at Ozzy's funeral in heartbreaking scenes Sir Michael Palin says he is preparing for the end of his life in sad update. However, Bill has given a short response to the allegations of a 'toxic culture' as he told The Times: "I don't know anything about it to be honest. We were under Covid protocols. There was no carousing." In 2023, an independent investigation upheld complaints of verbal bullying by Giovanni Pernice towards his celebrity partner Amanda Abbington, although the most serious claims of physical aggression were not substantiated. Fellow professional Graziano Di Prima also publicly apologised after kicking Zara McDermott during rehearsals that same year. While these incidents have drawn significant media attention, Bill's experience on the show paints a different picture. He described his time on the programme as physically gruelling but ultimately positive. He explained: "It was hard. It's physically quite a tough thing to do and I don't think sometimes people realise what it takes to train. Certainly there's a lot of pressure on the pros to come up with the goods. It's a big gig, Strictly. There's a lot of pressure to choreograph, to look good." He also spoke about the high expectations that are placed on the professional dancers, adding: "A lot of dancers then become very well known in their own right. They get book deals and they appear on shows and it's a big thing. It's a big show." While Bill didn't personally witness any bad behaviour, some behind-the-scenes staff have described a less supportive environment. In reports shared with BBC News, unnamed runners claimed they were subjected to verbal abuse, mood swings and shouting by certain dancers and celebrities. One runner claimed: "I think it's awful for the celebrities who suffered, but I think for the crew it's a much bigger problem." A BBC Studios spokesperson responded to the allegations, saying: "The welfare and safety of our crew on each series has always been, and remains, our utmost priority." They added that the claims "do not reflect the experience of the hundreds of production personnel who have worked on Strictly over the past 21 years." Meanwhile, excitement is building ahead of the new series, with rumours swirling about who will be taking to the dancefloor this autumn. According to reports, trailblazing model Ellie Goldstein has signed up as one of this year's contestants. Ellie, 23, made history as the first model with Down syndrome to appear on the cover of British Vogue in 2023 and has also been honoured with her own Barbie doll. A source told The Sun: "Ellie is thrilled to be taking part in Strictly. She has broken down so many barriers in her career... and can't wait to show people what she can do." They added that the BBC is "incredibly proud" of the signing and believes she "could go all the way".

Rebecca Loos' unexpected reaction to 'harsh' David Beckham interrogation
Rebecca Loos is about to surprise Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins viewers when she's interrogated about Sir David Beckham. In 2004, Loos, 48, alleged she had an affair with the footballing hero shortly after he'd moved his family to Spain after signing with Real Madrid while she was working as his Personal Assistant. More than 20 years on, the mother-of-two now lives in Norway as a qualified yoga teacher and A&E medical assistant and largely remained out of the spotlight until Beckham's 2023 Netflix documentary renewed unwanted interest in the scandal. Loos is part of the Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins line-up with the likes of Strictly's Tasha Ghouri, Louis Spence and S Club 7's Hannah Spearitt, and in a new trailer the controversial TV personality is shot at, punched in the face and can be seen breaking down in tears. It's all part of the course in the most challenging television show in Britain where a bunch of celebs who think they're hard as nails get taken down a peg or 10 by an elite team of ex-Special Forces soldiers lead by chief instructor Billy Billingham. He's joined by Jason Fox, Rudy Reyes and Chris Oliver to push the cars to their emotional and physical limits, and, naturally, they interrogate Loos about the accusations she threw at Beckham which he continues to deny. Speaking to The Telegraph though, Loos insisted that she remained unfazed as they grilled her about the alleged fling and was actually relieved that was the only ammo they had on her. She explained: 'I've been asked all those things hundreds of times before. It was all a bit: 'Here we go again…' 'I tried to answer clearly without giving them too much. Also, I'm one of the oldest people in there, so I have more experience with interviews and harsh questions. 'If they had asked me about more issues that are fresher in my heart, like my youngest son's diagnosis with a kind of autism just a few months before I went on the show, then they might have broken me down, got the waterworks going.' The waterworks did eventually start pouring though. In a new trailer, Loos is shown frantically driving away from a masked shooter while later she's seen with a fist to the face when the contestants are forced to battle each other in the ring without holding back. The TV personality also bursts into tears, and cries: 'I don't know if I can do this.' The end goal of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins is to last as long as possible without being ordered to pack your bags by an officer or throwing in the towel first. Ahead of the first episode airing this Sunday, Loos said it was a 'good time in my life to do this'. She said: 'When I was younger I loved doing extreme things. I was finalist in Spanish Survivor where I was surviving on an island for three months in Honduras, and I've done quite a few extreme things, and adventurous shows. So I just felt like it would be really interesting to do.' Being in Norway, however, Loos was unfamiliar with SAS: Who Dares Wins and wasn't prepared for quite how challenging it would be. She admitted: 'I really wish I had spoken to somebody who had done it before. I don't live in the UK, and I don't have much contact with a lot of people from the UK, so I have never watched this programme before. 'I got to see clips on the internet, but I really wish I'd spoken to someone who'd been in there.' She continued: 'I really felt that I was the oldest and the least fit of the group and that was quite hard, which is why I guess that really ignited in me a mission to get into shape or at least get into a better shape. There was a boat challenge, when we had to blow up the boat and carry it for miles, that broke me.' Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins returns Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4. Got a story?
