Matt Bloomfield believes it was about time Luton had some luck
It was cruel on Wimbledon who had limited the hosts to a single shot on target until that point as they coped admirably with the step up after winning the League Two play-off final.
Bloomfield, who took over in January but despite a strong finish to the campaign was unable to save the team from the drop, was asked whether he felt his side deserved their late good fortune.
'Yes,' he said. 'We feel like there's certain things that have gone against us over the last period of time.
'One thing you can't do is whine about it. All you can do is get on with your work, and you have to be grateful when the gods shine on you and give you a little bit of fortune.
'There were only two teams in the last 10 league games (last season) that got more points than us – Burnley and Leeds.
'But after being relegated you can't expect that everything's going to be looked on smoothly with sunshine and smiles.'
Prior to the late winner, defender Reuell Walters had had Luton's only attempt on target in the 63rd minute, drawing an excellent save from Bishop with a half-volley struck from range.
'Relived and pleased to get the win,' added Bloomfield. 'Pleased with elements of the performance – the togetherness, the unity within the group.
'Frustration that we didn't create more clearcut opportunities and look more threatening. But pleased to get off to a winning start.
'We can't expect to click our fingers and get to the final product overnight. There's been a definite change of identity which we saw on show tonight.
'We're an evolving group, we're a new group. Now it's about getting better every week and keep working to where we want to get to.'
Dons boss Johnnie Jackson, whose team were playing in the third tier for the first time since 2022, said: 'I'm gutted for my players and supporters. To lose the game in that manner was cruel.
'It's a fortunate goal from their point of view. They made us defend that situation, caught us in that position but that rarely happened to my team all night. I thought we defended brilliantly.
'To lose it on an own goal on the side of the bar is a hard one to take.'

ARSENAL 2-3 VILLARREAL Viktor Gyokeres made his first start in Arsenal colours as the Gunners geared up for the new season with a home friendly against Villarreal Arsenal continued their pre-season preparations with a 3-2 defeat against Villarreal, though there were some causes for optimism. The match brought a first Gunners start for Viktor Gyokeres after his big-money move from Sporting CP, but the striker wasn't able to mark the occasion with a goal. Nicolas Pepe came back to haunt his former club, with his shot possibly clipping team-mate Karl Etta Eyong on its way into the Gunners net. Bukayo Saka threatened a quick leveller, forcing a low save from goalkeeper Luiz Junior after cutting inside, but Eyong doubled the visitors lead when he followed up after a big David Raya save. Christian Norgaard got one back for the Gunners, but it was Villarreal who led at the break. Mikel Arteta changed things up at the break. with Norgaard making way for Martin Zubimendi and fellow new boy Cristhian Mosquera coming on for Ben White. A further flurry of changes appeared to disrupt Arsenal's momentum, and Arnaut Danjuma restored the visitors' two-goal advantage. Martin Odegaard reduced the deficit from the penalty spot, but Arsenal couldn't find a third - despite Dowman continuing to pose a threat as he continues his impressive pre-season. Arsenal have one more friendly, against Athletic Club in the Emirates Cup on Saturday, before beginning their Premier League campaign against Manchester United eight days later. Here are Mirror Football 's talking points from the Gunners' penultimate pre-season game. 1. Gyokeres still getting into gear After a brief run-out from the bench against Tottenham, Gyokeres had a chance to show what he can do from the get-go. The Swede showed flashes, but will have to wait to open his account for his new club. There was a half-chance inside the first 15 minutes, only for Gyokeres to fail to bring the ball under his spell as a cross came in from the right. The Gunners were clearly keen to attack down the flanks early on, with Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka providing an obvious threat. He found a proper sight of goal around the hour mark, forcing a smart save from Luiz Junior with a powerful effort from the edge of the six-yard box. That was his last chance, though, with his evening coming to an end after an hour. 2. Pepe scores on return There will be a fair few Arsenal fans hoping Gyokeres makes a bigger impact than fellow big-money signing Nicolas Pepe. The Ivorian winger cost more than £70m from Lille back in 2019, but ended up leaving for nothing and is now on Villarreal's books. He looked up for the game, perhaps keen to show his old employers what they were missing. There was even a muted celebration after he helped the ball into the home net early on. A little later on, the more frustrating side of Pepe was on show as he tried to run at Myles Lewis-Skelly but was watched well by the youngster. Despite that early goal, Lewis-Skelly got the better of the direct duels between the pair - though Pepe will surely chalk it up as a personal victory after finding the net. 3. Norgaard up and running Gyokeres wasn't the only Arsenal new boy to start the match. Christian Norgaard's arrival came with a little less fanfare, but he got the nod to play alongside Mikel Merino in the middle. The Danish midfielder wasn't signed for his goal threat, but he won't have been complaining. Just a few minutes after Villarreal got their second, Norgaard arrived late to head home a Martinelli corner at the back post. Martinelli should take just as much credit for his deep delivery. It looks like those discussions of the Gunners' set piece provess won't go away just yet. 4. Kiwior caught out With Gabriel working his way back to full fitness, Jakub Kiwior partnered William Saliba at the back. And he didn't have his proudest moment for the opener. The Polish defender looked to use his strength to hold off the threat of Eyong and Pepe as the Gunners failed to clear their lines. Sometimes, though, a more simple clearance can be the better option. It didn't get a great deal better after Gabriel's arrival, with former Spurs star Danjuma rounding off a quick counter-attack. Arteta will hope it was a case of getting sloppy defending out of their system. 5. Nwaneri sends reminder as Dowman shines again Ethan Nwaneri's minutes for Arsenal have largely come in an attacking role, but he started in a deeper berth on Wednesday. The youngster was essentially filling the role usually occupied by Martin Odegaard, and he showed more than enough with the ball to suggest he can do the same against certain Premier League opponents. It won't always be the right play, with more physical teams potentially able to take advantage. However, his ball-carrying from deep gives the Gunners a different option. Fellow youngster Max Dowman also got some more minutes, showing te home fans what he's all about. He didn't take long, either, drawing a foul from which Odegaard scored Arsenal's second of the evening, and a league bow looks like a matter of when not if.

Arsenal and Man Utd should have 'taken a chance' on £46m Liverpool star
Arsenal and Manchester United have been told they missed a trick by not considering a move for Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez this summer. Signing a striker has been a priority for a host of Premier League clubs this summer, including Arsenal and United. After injuries forced Arsenal to deploy Mikel Merino as a makeshift striker last season, the Gunners were keen to bring in a natural striker, eventually settling on Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres. Arsenal had also given heavy consideration to signing Benjamin Sesko, but the RB Leipzig striker now looks poised to join United after spurning a similar offer from Newcastle United. However, former Premier League striker Dean Saunders reckons both clubs should have looked closer to home and namechecked Nunez as a player who they both should have tried to sign. The Uruguayan looks set to leave Liverpool this summer to join Al-Hilal for an initial £46m fee after the Reds brought in Hugo Ekitike earlier in the window. But Saunders believes the 26-year-old could well have been worth a gamble for other clubs despite finishing last season with just five league goals. 'Nunez, he's up for grabs. Would you rather not have Nunez than Sesko and Gyokeres?' Saunders told talkSPORT. 'They paid a lot of money for them, and I thought, 'he's up for grabs.' I would take a chance on him. Saunders added: 'He's got every finish in his locker, both feet, headers, he's gone round the keeper, he's slotted the keeper, he's chipped the keeper, he's scored from distance. 'We've seen him do every finish, but somehow he manages to conjure up a miss – I don't know how many times he hit the post and the crossbar last season. 'There's definitely a player in there, you look at him and think, 'what a handful he is to play against.' More Trending 'He scored a lot of goals for Benfica in his second season and a couple of seasons ago he got 20-odd for Liverpool. 'I wouldn't be surprised if Nunez goes somewhere else and scores 20 goals next season.' Nunez's departure to Saudi Arabia could well clear the way for Liverpool to renew their interest in Alexander Isak, who has indicated he wants to leave Newcastle this summer. Jimmy Thelin confirms Aberdeen contract talks ongoing with Shayden Morris and other Scottish Cup final heroes
A number of Dons players are into the final year of their contracts in the Granite City Jimmy Thelin has confirmed that contract talks are ongoing with Shayden Morris and several others from Aberdeen 's Scottish Cup-winning squad. The fans' favourite has been the subject of several failed bids from Luton Town. The winger, 23, is out-of-contract at the end of the season and the Dons are trying to extend that deal. The likes of captain Graeme Shinnie, Dante Polvara and Ester Sokler are others who are now in the final year of their Pittodrie contracts. Thelin admitted: 'I think it's a question for Steven (Gunn, Aberdeen's director of football), but we have on-going talks with a lot of players. Let's see.' The Swede knows that when you are successful and you have good players, like Morris, then there is going to be interest. Thelin has insisted he can't worry about what he cannot impact. It is about working with what he has, while he has it and trying to improve his players, his squad, his staff and himself. Thelin acknowledged: 'I think we always have dialogue with all our players and when the time is right, the time is right. 'I don't go into specific players, but of course we have good players and other clubs have eyes on our players also. That's the reality we live in. 'But as long as you're a player, a manager, you have to always focus where you are. 'Otherwise, you stop growing and performing. 'So it's important to always stay in the moment and then what happens, after you're controlling one way, that will happen. 'But when you're a player or a manager, you have to focus where you are.' Aberdeen's model is and has been for several years based on a player trading model. They regularly sell on talent and that has been the case in recent years from Scott McKenna to the likes of Calvin Ramsay, Lewis Ferguson, Bojan Miovski, Ross McCrorie and Ylber Ramadani. This summer has been no different. Another cup hero in Pape Gueye has since been sold to Turkish side Kasimpasa earlier this month. Thelin knows others could go before the close of the window and it is about being proactive rather than being reactive. The Aberdeen manager, when asked about more out-goings, answered: 'No, I think it's difficult to speculate. I think we're taking it day by day now, week by week and the window is still one month away from closing. 'So that's why it's so difficult to see what's going to happen in the future. We have to focus on now. "We have a competitive game on Sunday and then the rest of the thing is going on in the background. The window is open, so you never know if someone comes in for a player or if you need to rebalance your squad or whatever. 'But we have to focus right now. As long as the window is open, it's on-going work. 'Even when the window is closed, the recruitment department keeps working to the next window. I think when everybody's aligned, they're aligned then things happen.'
