Tom Jones halts Cardiff Castle gig as fans boo after big hit
Tom Jones halts Cardiff Castle gig as fans boo after big hit One particular song from the Welsh star was met with a tense reaction at his Cardiff Castle show, prompting him to say: "You shouldn't take it literally' Tom Jones at Cardiff Castle (Image: WalesOnline) Tom Jones has taken over Cardiff Castle for two nights this summer, kicking off his homecoming gigs on August 20. The crowd were treated to hits like What's New Pussycat, I'm Growing Old and Sex Bomb, but there was one song that elicited boos from the crowd on a chilly summer night. The Treforest singer was readying the venue to hear his hit Delilah, which became synonymous with Welsh international rugby matches in the decades since. But back in 2023 the track was removed from choirs' playlists at Six Nations matches, and stopped featuring on Principality Stadium half-time playlists back in 2015. The song, released in 1968 when it reached number two in the charts, is about a jealous lover stabbing his unfaithful partner. One line reads: 'I crossed the street to her house and she opened the door; she stood there laughing, I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more.' Tom, who earlier in the night told the crowd what Wales meant to him, has sung the song at his big gigs since that 2023 ban and he wasn't dropping it for his 2025 summer gig either. On Wednesday night he told the crowd after finishing the hit: "'Who's that man who said we shouldn't sing that song anymore? That used to make my day that on an international match. "I used to wait for it and then they said we can't sing it anymore. Who is this man who said we can't sing Delilah? They said it's about a man killing his wife with a knife. Well it is, but you shouldn't take it literally.' The crowd booed in support of Tom's backing of the song. At the time of the controversy the WRU said: "Delilah will not feature on the playlist for choirs for rugby internationals at Principality Stadium. The WRU removed the song from its half-time entertainment and music play list during international matches in 2015. Guest choirs have also more recently been requested not to feature the song during their pre-match performances and throughout games. 'The WRU condemns domestic violence of any kind. We have previously sought advice from subject matter experts on the issue of censoring the song and we are respectfully aware that it is problematic and upsetting to some supporters because of its subject matter.' Tickets for Tom Jones at Cardiff Castle on Thursday, August 21 There are also tickets available for Tom Jones at Cardiff Castle on Thursday, August 21 on Ticketmaster. Prices start at £84. People tell me, but you don't live in Wales do you?" He explained: "But Wales lives in me." Tom was supported by Ben Ellis and Stone Foundation before he took to the stage at about 8.45pm.
