CBS analyst predicts potential Red River Showdown in College Football Playoff

USA Today15 hours ago
Oklahoma and Texas have met on the football field at least once every single year since 1929. The last time they faced each other twice in a season was in 2018 in the Sooners' Big 12 championship win over the Longhorns. But if one CBS Sports football analyst's prediction comes true, the two schools may do so again this season.
Bud Elliott, who hosts a show for CBS Sports and 247Sports, released his College Football Playoff predictions on Wednesday. In it, he has the Sooners as the No. 11 seed facing No. 6 Clemson in the first round. Were the Sooners to win that game and Elliott's projection hold, OU would face No. 3 Texas in the national semifinals.
To make it to the playoff, Oklahoma would have to outperform its preseason rankings. The Sooners enter the season ranked outside the Top 25 in the first USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. They're barely out of the Top 25, though, picking up the most poll points of any unranked team, checking in at a de facto No. 26. Texas is atop the poll, ranked No. 1 in FBS in the preseason.
Last year, Texas rolled over Oklahoma, 34-3, in a season that didn't go the Sooners' way. OU finished 6-7 for the second time in coach Brent Venables' three years. The Longhorns, on the other hand, went 13-3, making the College Football Playoff for the second straight season, ultimately falling in the national semifinals to eventual national champion Ohio State. Those two schools open their regular season against each other this year on August 30 as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country.
If the Red River rivals were to meet in the College Football Playoff, it would be a showdown of the two most talked about quarterbacks in the country in 2025, John Mateer and Arch Manning. There will be a ton of buzz surrounding the two signal callers throughout the season, and how they fare against SEC defenses will determine a lot about how the SEC season will go.
Texas was picked to win the Southeastern Conference during SEC Media Days. OU was picked 10th in the 16-team league. Oklahoma opens its season August 30 against FCS Illinois State before an opportunity to make a statement comes week two against the Michigan Wolverines.

Pretty good,' McShay said on The Todd McShay Show this week. 'They haven't had great talent. They lose and 1,505 [yards] he rushed for last year. So they lose that, but now you got all these other [players] and now we're in the Big 12. Not the competition level of certainly the SEC and Big Ten and even the ACC. 'Arizona State, still the top dog. returns. out, they brought in a running back transfer, they're gonna have two or three-man rotation. They're going to spread things out more. 'And I haven't you mentioned , right? That's going to be fascinating in the Big 12.'

'Nothing' preventing talks between Jerry Jones, Parsons, but Cowboys owner in no rush

Jerry Jones did not give much away about where things stand with Micah Parsons' contract, but what he did emphasize spoke volumes. When asked if talks might pick up now that Dallas Cowboys training camp is coming to a close, Jones responded, 'I don't know that necessarily talks will, but we've got a game coming and he's under contract.' Pressed on whether there is a deadline to determine if Parsons will play Week 1, Jones stayed on message. 'No, not at all. You don't have deadlines when you're playing under a contract.' Jones also said 'nothing' is preventing the Cowboys from negotiating with Parsons right now. But despite that, the focus on Parsons being 'under contract' feels like more than just a casual reminder. It hints at a deliberate stance from Jones and the Cowboys: they are not in a rush to lock in a record-breaking deal when they already have control over Parsons' future. Parsons, one of the NFL's most dominant defenders since his 2021 debut, is in the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. The Cowboys picked up his $20+ million option for 2025 (the NFL and NFLPA disagree on the exact amount), and they still hold the option to use the franchise tag in both 2026 and 2027. That could mean three more full seasons before a long-term agreement becomes unavoidable. Parsons is in line to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in league history. Jones' comments suggest the Cowboys are perfectly comfortable waiting a while before making that happen. The team has used the tag as leverage before, most notably with Dak Prescott and DeMarcus Lawrence, to either buy more time or see if a player's performance justifies the long-term commitment. For now, Parsons remains active in camp, which Jones called 'important for him' as he takes in coaching and builds chemistry with his teammates. But Jones' bottom line is hard to miss: 'I have a lot of respect for a contract," and the Cowboys are not feeling the pressure to change it early. Rumor Claims Cowboys Have Big Trade Offer For Micah Parsons

Rumor Claims Cowboys Have Big Trade Offer For Micah Parsons originally appeared on The Spun. Will the Dallas Cowboys trade Micah Parsons before the start of the 2025 season? That seems to be a popular question in NFL circles this month. Parsons requested a trade from the Cowboys just 13 days ago. The All-Pro pass rusher made it clear that he wasn't thrilled with the way Jerry Jones and the front office handled contract negotiations. "I did everything I could to show that I wanted to be a Cowboy and wear the star on my helmet. I wanted to play in front of the best fans in sports and make this America's team once again," Parsons wrote. "Unfortunately I no longer want to be here. I no longer want to be held to closed-door negotiations without my agent present. I no longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization, our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me." While at practice Wednesday afternoon, Jones was asked if he expects Parsons to suit up for the Cowboys in Week 1. He was unable to answer that question, but he did seem confident that a deal will eventually get done. And yet, a popular trade rumor involving Parsons surfaced on social media this Thursday. According to a popular social media user by the name of "Rickey Scoops," the Cowboys have received a trade offer for Parsons from the Green Bay Packers. "Even though I don't think he will be traded, the #Packers have a very serious trade offer on the table to the #Cowboys for Micah Parsons," the latest post from Rickey Scoops states. It's unclear what Green Bay would offer Dallas for Parsons. Earlier this month though, ESPN's Adam Schefter suggested that it'd take at least two first-round picks. Adding Parsons on defense would make the Packers a serious contender in the NFC, but the Cowboys don't seem interested in parting ways with their best defensive player. Nonetheless, we'll continue to monitor this situation until a deal is agreed to.
