Bayern Munich's João Palhinha set for Tottenham medical ahead of loan move

Yahoo04-08-2025
reports that João Palhinha is set to have his medical ahead of completing a loan move to Tottenham.
Palhinha will have his medical in Germany, with Tottenham currently in Hong Kong for pre-season, ahead of his move back to the Premier League.
The 30-year-old joined Bayern last summer for €51m after the club failed to sign him two summers ago from Fulham. However, Thomas Tuchel, who wanted to sign Palhinha, was no longer at the club, and new head coach Vincent Kompany used the Portuguese international sparingly.
An injury at the front end of last season did not help, but Palhinha only made 10 starts for Bayern, totalling 986 minutes across 25 appearances.
The fact that Bayern went ahead with the €51m move for the 30-year-old, mainly due to goodwill, does show the current state that the club is in at the moment. The failed move for the midfielder will likely approach the transfer of Sadio Mané in terms of failures.
Other departures from Bayern this summer are Thomas Müller, who is set to join Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS, as well as fringe players Adam Aznou to Everton, and Bryan Zaragoza has joined Celta Vigo.

Ruben Amorim's Manchester United are looking to bounce back from a historically bad season, while Mikel Arteta's Arsenal aim to finally take the next step and secure the title after three seasons of finishing second. Some neutrals might say, rather cruelly, that this is a clash of a movable force with a stoppable object. Which will come out on top? Right here, right now on The Athletic is exactly the place to find out.

Eberechi Eze expected to start Crystal Palace opening match, Tottenham pursuit ongoing

Eberechi Eze is expected to start Crystal Palace's opening Premier League match against Chelsea on Sunday amid ongoing interest from Tottenham Hotspur. Speaking before Palace's opening game of the season, head coach Oliver Glasner praised Eze's professionalism but offered no guarantees he would remain at the club beyond the September 1 transfer deadline. Advertisement Spurs have already added a forward to their squad this summer, completing the permanent transfer of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich in a deal worth €35m, plus €10m in potential bonuses. They begin the start of the Premier League season without former captain Heung-min Son, who joined Los Angeles FC in August after asking to leave the north London side, while James Maddison is set to miss the majority of the coming campaign after suffering an ACL injury. Liverpool take CHARGE of battle for Premier League star

Liverpool are firmly in the driving seat for one Premier League star. The Reds hold the cards as crunch time nears. There are now around two weeks left of the summer transfer window and Liverpool are far from done. That's despite possibly the busiest window we've ever seen from the Reds. Richard Hughes and co. have set about overhauling the first-team squad. We've had record-breaking arrivals, high-profile exits, and a lot of drama, honestly. And yet both areas are set to see moe changes. Alexander Isak is the big one up top, of course. Liverpool are desperate to sign the Swede and would pay a British transfer record fee in order to get it done. Defence, though, isn't sorted either. Liverpool are on the verge of signing Giovanni Leoni from Parma - one of the best young talents in Europe right now. It's a deal that should lock down the future of their defence. But it also hands them the initiative in another centre-back race. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range Liverpool want Marc Guehi Fabrizio Romano is adamant that Liverpool still want to sign Marc Guehi despite the deal for Leoni. Crystal Palace are open to selling their captain as he's now within the final year of his contract. In fact, Palace are actively looking to sell. Chairman Steve Parish admitted as much this week - the Eagles can't afford to let Guehi leave for free in 2026. It created a game of chicken, essentially. Palace want a sizeable fee despite the risk of nothing in a year. Liverpool want a discounted fee because of the risk of nothing in a year. Whose nerve would hold? Well, Liverpool's as it turns out. Palace's power in negotiations came from Liverpool needing a new centre-back. Jarell Quansah left the club this summer, leaving the Reds short. Leoni, however, now fills the void left by Quansah. It means the squad doesn't actually need Guehi right now - Liverpool would just like to have him early. A week ago, Palace knew they could hold firm on their fee and Liverpool may be forced to pay it in order to avoid heading into the upcoming season with only three centre-backs. We've seen that story before, after all, and it ends horrendously. But now Liverpool are likely fine with waiting on Guehi. They've got four centre-backs and now it's Palace who are the most eager to get a deal done. It should see the asking price drop as we get closer to the end of the window and closer to Guehi leaving for free. Advantage Liverpool.
