
Universe was not formed in big bang but ‘bounced' out of black hole
His new explanation, published in the journal Physical Review D, suggests that the Universe was formed as a result of a gravitational collapse in a larger universe which generated a massive black hole leading to a rebound or 'bounce' causing our universe to emerge.
Professor Gaztanaga said: 'The Big Bang model begins with a point of infinite density where the laws of physics break down.
'This is a deep theoretical problem that suggests the beginning of the Universe is not fully understood.
'We've questioned that model and tackled questions from a different angle – by looking inward instead of outward.
'Instead of starting with an expanding universe and asking how it began, we considered what happens when an over-density of matter collapses under gravity.'
Prof Gaztanaga explained that the theory developed by his team of researchers worked within the principles of quantum mechanics and the model could be tested scientifically.
He said: 'We've shown that gravitational collapse does not have to end in a singularity and found that a collapsing cloud of matter can reach a high-density state and then bounce, rebounding outward into a new expanding phase.
'Crucially, this bounce occurs entirely within the framework of general relativity, combined with the basic principles of quantum mechanics. What emerges on the other side of the bounce is a universe remarkably like our own.
'Even more surprisingly, the rebound naturally produces a phase of accelerated expansion driven not by a hypothetical field but by the physics of the bounce itself.
'We now have a fully worked-out solution that shows the bounce is not only possible – it's inevitable under the right conditions.
'One of the strengths of this model is that it makes predictions that can be thoroughly tested. And what's more this new model has also revealed that the Universe is slightly curved, like the surface of the Earth.'
He added: 'Furthermore, it could also shed new light on other deep mysteries in our understanding of the early universe such as the origin of supermassive black holes, the nature of dark matter, or the formation and evolution of galaxies.'
Prof Gaztanaga, who is the science co-ordinator for the ARRAKIHS ESA space mission, said that the four wide-angle telescopes on the satellite could help confirm the theory through its ability to detect ultra-low surface brightness structures in the outskirts of galaxies which he explained were essential for studying how galaxies grow and evolve.

Alien: Earth review – TV that bristles with bone-deep dread
It's usually a bad sign if you're wondering what the heck is going on in a drama when you're two episodes in, but there is an exception: you can happily ride on if you sense that, although you don't know what it's doing, the show definitely does. Such is the bristling, bewildering, overpoweringly confident aura of Alien: Earth, a new TV take on cinema's greatest sci-fi horror franchise by writer-director Noah Hawley of Fargo fame. We are in the year 2120, just the right setting for a show that plays on our fears that our grandchildren and great-grandchildren are going to live in hell. Simple green-on-black text, styled like a computer readout from the 80s, informs us that, in this broken future, corporations have taken over the universe, and which one achieves total domination will be determined by which of three technologies wins a 'race for immortality': cyborgs (enhanced humans), synths (wholly artificial beings) or hybrids (synthetic bodies with human consciousnesses implanted). The last of these is our primary concern in a first episode that mostly consigns the flesh-ripping aliens to flash-forwards so rapid they are almost subliminal. In Neverland, the laboratory complex of trillion-dollar disruptive startup Prodigy, a girl who looks to be in the last stages of terminal cancer lies down next to an inert adult figure she names Wendy. When the procedure is over, her brain has been copied from her ailing body and pasted into the entirely lifelike synthetic woman. The newly alive Wendy (Sydney Chandler) is the first hybrid and, soon, the leader of a gang of child-robot soldiers mentored by the enigmatic Kirsh, played by Timothy Olyphant sporting harrowing bleach-blond hair, an unnerving murmur and a turtleneck sweater that says something really isn't right here. Up in space, meanwhile, a crew of humans have signed up for a job with big workers' rights issues. If being managed by a humourless cyborg named Morrow (Babou Ceesay) wasn't appalling enough, their cargo of captured alien life-forms are about to break out of the laughably weak glass containers they've been stored in, kill everyone except the self-preserving Morrow, and cause the spaceship to crash as Morrow grimly tries to fulfil his obligation to the super-rich Weyland-Yutani Corporation by returning the bounty to Earth. As the ship mingles with the rubble of the tall urban Earth building it has ploughed into and a Prodigy search-and-rescue (-and-steal-anything-valuable) team descends, led by Alex Lawther as listless medic (and Wendy's long-lost brother!) Hermit, the monsters are finally on the loose. The setup is loose compared with most of the Alien movies, since the human and humanoid protagonists aren't confined with the creatures in a tin box surrounded by an endless, scream-proof void, so Alien: Earth has to find other ways to create bone-deep dread. Most obviously we have the aliens, who aren't yet particularly innovative but are suitably awesome, from a scuttling, leechlike bug to an eyeball with many, many legs and a shiny xenomorph that comes over as a little more man-like than its previous incarnations. They're the classic nightmare fuel updated and sharpened and, when they strike, they leave behind the sort of oddly beautiful tableaux of torn corpses we haven't seen since Hannibal. Sign up to What's On Get the best TV reviews, news and features in your inbox every Monday after newsletter promotion Even better is the casting, with Lawther bringing the same blank resignation he lent to The End of the F***ing World, and Chandler offsetting it with a disturbing blend of naivety and concealed power. In an obvious allegory for the rise of AI, the hybrid Wendy has been given abilities beyond what even her creators understand. Most pleasing to see is Samuel Blenkin, rewarded for his fantastic supporting turn as the resentful weakling Prince Charles in Mary & George with the key role of Boy Kavalier, the 'genius' CEO of Prodigy and the Neverland project. With his comfy robes and puppyish, young-Wonka bounce, he is the frighteningly influential tech-bro pseudo-visionary who might bring the whole world crashing down, essentially just for a laugh: one of many nice touches in Blenkin's performance is the way the Boy takes a crucial video call by lying on a bed and gripping a tablet between his raised bare feet. What Alien: Earth lacks in its opening two instalments is a propulsive, linear narrative or clarity of thematic vision, to the point where it sometimes approaches Westworld levels of making us ask the gloomy screen what in the blazes is happening. But whether it's a padded corridor filmed at a 10-degree angle, a landscape of jagged concrete and raining sparks, a wriggling creepy-crawly from space or just the look in someone's jaded eye, the series always has a way of making us feel like helpless prey being circled. Something gloriously horrific is just around the corner. Alien: Earth is on Disney+ now.

New Airbus satellite launched for climate and weather analysis
A newly launched satellite will help with weather forecasting and climate Aerospace company Airbus, based in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, built the MetOp-SG A1 under leadership from the European Space Agency (ESA).It was successfully launched into orbit on an Ariane 6 rocket from Europe's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, at 01:37 more satellites are being built by Airbus in Toulouse, France, and Friedrichshafen, Germany, which will ensure coverage over the next two decades. The satellites work in pairs, with one providing atmospheric sounding and imaging data, and the other offering microwave imaging and radar satellites included a propulsion system which allowed them to begin a descent into the sea after their mission was complete, reducing space Gittins, head of propulsion programme at Airbus Stevenage, said more than 100 engineers have worked on the project in the Hertfordshire town has worked on this project with his team since said: "You can't get much more exciting than seeing a rocket launch and your payload being delivered safely into space."Yes, it's a long programme, but you have to balance that with the excitement of the launch." Simonetta Cheli, ESA's director of earth observation programmes, said the satellites will help predictions despite "increasingly erratic weather patterns".He explained: "Timely and precise forecasting has never been more crucial, and the MetOp-SG mission is now set to play a critical role in improving weather forecasts and climate monitoring."Alain Fauré, head of space systems at Airbus, added: "The successful launch of MetOp-SG A1 is a landmark moment for Europe and for global weather forecasting."Having designed and built the first generation of MetOp satellites, we now see the first of this powerful new series in orbit. "These satellites will be the sentinels of our planet, helping to deliver more accurate weather predictions that benefit citizens across the globe." See the Galapagos from Hermes, the newest luxury catamaran
'There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that's your own self,' the prominent English scientist Thomas Henry Huxley once said. Nicknamed 'Darwin's bulldog' for his pugnacious defence of Darwin's Theory of Evolution, Huxley believed that we shouldn't claim to know things for which there is no evidence. Brought to world attention 190 years ago, when the 26-year-old Charles Darwin arrived at the Galapagos during his five-year voyage aboard the HMS Beagle, the Galapagos has proved itself over the decades to be one of the world's finest places to see wildlife. Thanks to the foresight of the Ecuadorian government, who in 1959 made the archipelago a national park, today its unique biodiversity has been conserved, making it the world's finest natural laboratory for studying evolution. 'There has never been a better time to visit the Galapagos,' Pablo Vargas, one of the certified naturalist guides, tells me, as we stroll along the copper sands of Rabida Island. Thanks to development projects that have brought together scientists and grassroots volunteers, the islands' conservation data is now certainly impressive. The numbers of endemic wildlife are increasing each year and invasive species (the pigs, goats and rats brought to the islands by passing ships) have been eradicated, in large part due to work undertaken in tandem with Leonardo DiCaprio's charity Re:wild. A preservation-first approach to tourism has also been developed, bringing conservation-minded visitors to this fragile region of the planet, and in turn raising much-needed funding. One of the newest ships to transport high-end visitors around the islands from this May is Hermes, a 50m catamaran that bridges the gap between expedition-style cruise ships carrying up to 100 passengers and smaller local boats. It was launched, said Esteban Velásquez, the second-generation CEO of the Ecuadorian, family-owned, Via Natura, because he recognised that the ultra-rich weren't being catered for when cruising the Galapagos. 'On the cruise liners you're just a number, while the small boats lack amenities,' he explained. While there are private superyachts for charter in the area, he added, restrictions are tight. Which makes Hermes — built in Ecuador and exclusively operated in the Galápagos — the first of its kind. The equatorial sun is riding high as I approach the yacht on a speedy tender, and I catch sight of the first of the full-height tinted windows that give the multihull a distinctly superyacht aesthetic. There is also a distinctive fourth deck — on which passengers can dine on private tables, while observing nightly visitors such as sea lions sleeping on the aft deck near big-billed pelicans and, in the water, circling Galapagos sharks. Inside Hermes, the collaborative vision of Velásquez, his wife, and the interior designer Gabriela Soto of the Dallas-based DeLeo & Fletcher Design manifests in a contemporary cocoon of air-conditioned comfort. The interior is decorated in shades of oatmeal and cream, with wood and brushed stainless steel. There are Ecuadorian touches — headboards carved by Ecuadorian carpenters and soap dispensers hewn from local stone; as well as a library, a mosaiced hammam and sundeck hot-tub. There are 12 butler-serviced double guest suites, each with a private balcony and whirlpool bath in which, on my second morning, I soaked while watching a blood orange sunrise. The two master suites, which also have capacious walk-in wardrobes, can interconnect to an additional bedroom or a private lounge. Across all four decks guests can enjoy the views of wildlife, which last year drew a record 330,000 visitors to these islands. Within minutes of touching down on Baltra Island, I glimpsed the mustard-hued scaly form of a land iguana crawling through tall grass. Across the next four days, the wildlife sightings kept on coming: a Porter's tortoise (its hulking carapace slowly marching across petrified magma cannonballs), a flock of shrimp-pink flamingos, a red-breasted lava lizard (tiptoeing past a razor snake), swooping cactus finches, divebombing frigatebirds (the bully boys of the skies), and nesting pairs of blue-footed boobies (one male giving a nonchalant display of a mating dance).On our third day, on a late-afternoon beach landing on Sante Fé, we found ourselves alongside a colony of sleeping sea lions, their barks and coughs reverberating across the sandy shore. The previous day, we'd snorkelled among them, small pups whipping rings around us in a show of aquatic acrobatics. Each guided snorkel session served up bucket-list marine life: black- and white-tipped reef sharks, sea turtles, octopuses and darting shoals of sturgeon fish. For those wanting to see the Galapagos in style, Hermes' five-star services will be a welcome addition to the fleet. Sadly, though, counter to what Huxley hoped, there was no evidence to show that the journey had improved me. After four days of massages, attentive butler service and guided activities interspersed with cold glasses of soursop juice, I had been spoilt for life. A six-night, all-inclusive cruise on Hermes ( through the Galapagos costs from £8,624pp, excluding flights, (or £163,853 for private charters of up to 20 guests) through
