Dublin scholar in tonight's University Challenge final

RTÉ News12-05-2025
Dubliner Oscar Despard will captain Christ's College, Cambridge in the final of University Challenge tonight - one of the UK's most prestigious and fiercely contested quiz competitions.
Competing in the BBC series has been a childhood dream for the 22-year-old from Portobello.
His father, William Despard, said it's an exciting and nerve-wracking day, and although the programme has been pre-recorded, he has no idea of the outcome.
"I genuinely do not know the result. I did try to angle it out of my son around the second round," he said.
"He's more sensible than his father. He told me, 'Well, you're not going to enjoy it as much if you know.'"
Oscar Despard faced another Dubliner in the semi-final - Kevin Flanagan from Dundrum, who captained the University of Bristol team. They narrowly missed out on a place in tonight's final.
William Despard will be watching the final at the National Yacht Club in Dún Laoghaire, where his son used to sail "when he had time!"
Serving customers in his Portobello bakery today, William Despard also spoke about his son's long-standing interest in bread - specifically gluten.
At the age of 14, Oscar did a project for the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition on how gluten degrades during long fermentation in sourdough bread. He went on to win the Individual Prize at the exhibition in 2020.
Oscar attended Sandford Park School in Ranelagh and was one of just two Leaving Cert students in Ireland in 2021 to achieve nine H1s.
His former principal, Edith Byrne, described him today as a "humble, modest, all-round student" who was "hugely involved in the life of the school."
"He was a wonderful role model as head boy. He was particularly active in debating - in Irish, English, and French - and he also chaired the Young People's Parliament."
She added that Oscar is "very calm under pressure," which she hopes will stand to him this evening.
Now studying for a PhD in molecular biology at Christ's College, Cambridge, Oscar will watch the final at a screening in a theatre on campus.
His mother, Professor Niamh Moran, a scientist at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, said she is immensely proud of her son, no matter the outcome.
The University Challenge final, between Christ's College, Cambridge, and the University of Warwick, airs tonight at 8.30pm on BBC Two.

Emotional Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley moved to tears by fans' touching gesture to son Josh after beating cancer

FAN CHANT Emotional Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley moved to tears by fans' touching gesture to son Josh after beating cancer STEPHEN BRADLEY was moved to tears by Shamrock Rovers fans' heartwarming song in honour of his son Josh after he beat cancer. The young boy, 11, has been undergoing treatment for leukemia for over three and a half years. 1 Josh Bradley has beaten cancer Credit: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile And on Tuesday, he got to ring the bell at Crumlin Hospital in a ceremonial nod to having finished up his last bout of chemotherapy. Advertisement On Thursday night, his dad Stephen oversaw Shamrock Rovers shock Santa Clara in their Europa Conference League play-off first leg in the Azores. And after the game, the Hoops fans that had travelled serenaded their beloved gaffer with the chant "There's only one Josh Bradley". The beaming Dubliner put his hand to his heart in gratitude to the gesture before wiping tears from his eyes. And on social media, fans praised the song and the bond between supporters and manager. Advertisement Gavan Reilly said: "This is magnificent. What a week for that family" while a second fan called it a "proud evening". A third said: "The real "beautiful game"" A fourth hailed: "For my English followers, this is the lovely moment tonight as Shamrock Rovers fans sing about their manager Stephen Bradey's 11 year old son Josh, who has beaten cancer after a 3 year battle. "It is indeed the #GreatestLeagueInTheWorld" Advertisement A fifth said: "Absolutely brilliant, f*** the football, a great week for a family that have gone through so much" Heartwarming moment child rings cancer bell for all-clear after three years of treatment And a sixth said: "That's a very, very rich man". Bradley admitted he and his family feel "lucky" after Josh got the all-clear from leukemia. He told the Irish Mirror: "He got his last chemotherapy last week, and then they tell you then that he's free to ring the bell, which is, again special, because ringing the bell signals the end of your treatment. 'He doesn't have to get chemotherapy anymore, so to get that news last week was the best news we've had in three and a half years. Advertisement 'Yesterday, we went in as a family, and all the nurses and all the nurses and doctors that looked after him for the last three and a half years were there, because they're incredible." When quizzed on how Josh has taken everything in, he added: 'He's been really, really excited, really hyper, because he got the news that he was allowed to ring the bell, and that's the end of it. 'So he's been really hyper, and, like I said, excited, looking forward to it, but then yesterday came the emotion of the realisation that he's done, and he rang the bell, and he was really, really emotional, which is to be expected. 'He's very like me, in terms of, he's a deep thinker. He's been holding a lot inside and I think we've seen a lot of that coming up yesterday. 'Then, yesterday evening he was able to go and meet his friends and play a club match, a friendly, and then after the game, he's hyper again, because he's just telling us all his friends, the referee, the coaches made a big thing of him. Advertisement 'There were all different ranges of emotions yesterday, but he's been really hyper, really emotional, and then last night he was just hyper again. 'We understand how lucky we are as a family to be given that opportunity yesterday.'

BBC reveal major show ‘is going nowhere' after lead star quit as bosses give update on beleaguered series

The last series had been bankrolled by Disney+ WHO, WHAT, WHERE? BBC reveal major show 'is going nowhere' after lead star quit as bosses give update on beleaguered series THE BBC has tried to alleviate the concerns of Doctor Who fans after Ncuti Gatwa quit the Tardis following the shortest Time Lord tenure in 20 years. But they've not been very convincing. 3 The BBC has tried to alleviate the concerns of Doctor Who fans after Ncuti Gatwa's exit Credit: PA 3 Gatwa had the shortest Time Lord tenure in 20 years Credit: PA Advertisement The corporation's new Chief Content Officer Katie Phillips was grilled about the sci-fi show's future on a stage at the Edinburgh TV Festival, and she couldn't say for sure when, or if, it would be recommissioned by them. She was asked about Disney+, who bankrolled the last two series, and whether the Beeb would be willing to keep the show going if they didn't renew their arrangement. Katie replied: 'Absolutely. Any Whovians out there, rest assured, Doctor Who is going nowhere. 'Disney has been a great partnership, but going forward with or without Disney Doctor Who will still be on the BBC.' Advertisement But when pressed on when they'd confirm any decision she replied: 'Soon, don't worry. "The Tardis is going nowhere. Lindsay Salt will be on soon so she can talk a bit more about that.' Then when Lindsay, the BBC's director of drama, arrived on the same stage, she was equally vague about the long-running show. She said: 'There's no update at the moment, but honestly we will share as soon as we do have an update. Advertisement 'The BBC is committed to the brand. "For drama, it's the biggest brand for the under 35-year-olds. Billie Piper announced as new Doctor Who as she replaces Ncuti Gatwa in BBC series "So it's very important to us and we're committed.' A massive question mark now hangs over the future of the show and whether the Beeb's 'commitment' and determination to keep it 'with the BBC' actually means they'll order a new series any time soon. It all comes after Ncuti's departure amid plunging viewing figures, which some fans have blamed on the increasingly woke storylines under the tenure of Russell T Davies. Advertisement The BBC had previously said they wouldn't make any decisions until after the most recent series finished running — well, that was nearly three months ago now. Bizbit SKY announced that it is making an interview series with Dame Judi Dench which will see her chat to various celebrities. Called Tea With Judi Dench, the show sees her tap into her contacts book for subjects – the first being her fellow luvvie Sir Kenneth Branagh. PLOPPER FUNNY, DANNY ATTENDEES at the Edinburgh TV Festival like to think they are a sophisticated bunch, but the biggest laugh heard at the event proved otherwise. Sky unveiled a clip of its upcoming show, The Dyers' Caravan Park, which sees Danny Dyer and daughter Dani try their hand at running a holiday park they have invested in. The first thing they are seen doing is organising a meeting with the residents. During the chat, complaints are raised that the park's swimming pool had people doing number twos in there. Advertisement While discussing this later in the day, Danny delivers a lovely little anecdote to Dani. He tells her: 'I s**t in the bath once, didn't I? "Me and my brother used to have a bath and I s**t in it and I pushed it up his end of the bath, because I didn't want to get in trouble.' You had to be there. Bizbit QUOTE of the day came, predictably, from hilarious ITV boss Kevin Lygo, who was asked at the TV festival how he felt about making shows for young people. He was trying to say it could be a venture that could backfire, but instead said: 'You can get in terrible trouble chasing teenagers.' NO LAUGHING MATTER JUST like the contestants have to stifle a giggle, try to contain your excitement as Prime Video gives us a first look at the new line-up for Last One Laughing. Advertisement The breakout hit show has brought together a top-class collection of comedians for the second series, which arguably tops the first run. 3 The cast of Last One Laughing series two Bob Mortimer, who triumphed last time round, is back along with hosts Jimmy Carr and Roisin Conaty. All Bob had to do to win was spend time with ten of the funniest men and women in Britain and not even smile, let alone laugh. Which is no mean feat. Advertisement Prime Video promises that the new season, which airs next year, will once again be 'packed with comedy cameos, format twists and surprises designed to elicit laughs from both players and viewers alike'.
