Fireworks unit blast: Families protest demanding higher compensation

Time of India13 hours ago
Virudhunagar: Tension prevailed at the Virudhunagar Govt Medical College Hospital on Wednesday as families of victims killed in the fireworks factory blast near Sattur held a protest, refusing to receive the bodies until enhanced compensation was assured.
Eight workers were killed in the explosion at a private unit in Chinnakamanpatti owned by a Sivakasi-based operator. While postmortem was completed for all victims, families of five workers — Ramajeyam, Naga Pandi, Lakshmi, Chellapandi, and Punniyamurthi — sat on the road outside the hospital demanding 10 lakh compensation each from the state. After revenue and police officials intervened, the body of Punniyamurthi was received, but others continued their protest and later were dispersed by the police.
The incident triggered sharp political responses. CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam urged the state govt to immediately disburse 20 lakh to the families, in line with the National Green Tribunal (NGT)'s earlier directive for blast victims, and an additional 10 lakh from the factory management. "The 4 lakh announced by the state is grossly inadequate," he said, adding that recurring mishaps expose a lax attitude towards enforcing safety norms.

AMMK general secretary T T V Dhinakaran also condemned the district SP D Kannan's threatening tone in a video that surfaced, showing him warning protesters to "stay quiet or face consequences." Calling it "high-handedness," Dhinakaran demanded that the govt respect democratic protests and ensure just compensation.
Responding to criticism over the police's handling of the protest, the Virudhunagar district police in a statement clarified that no force was used against the victims' families and that their intervention was aimed at preventing disruption to hospital services and road access for ambulances.
The release added that protesters repeatedly attempted to block the main road outside the hospital, affecting patient care and public movement. Police said they only issued firm warnings to disperse the crowd and facilitated the handing over of bodies to the kin. Claims of high-handedness were dismissed as exaggerated and not reflective of actual events.

‘Speak Marathi in Maharashtra': Minister after shopkeeper thrashed in Thane - What we know so far

NEW DELHI: A political and linguistic controversy has erupted in Maharashtra after a viral video showed a shop owner being assaulted in Mira Road for allegedly refusing to speak in Marathi. The incident has sparked sharp reactions, including from state Minister Yogesh Kadam who said, 'In Maharashtra, you have to speak Marathi. If you don't know Marathi, your attitude shouldn't be that you won't speak Marathi… If anyone disrespects Marathi in Maharashtra, we will enforce our laws.' He, however, added that vigilante action was wrong and that the attackers should have filed a complaint instead. What is the controversy about? The issue began when a group of men, suspected to be members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), allegedly thrashed Babulal Khimji Chaudhary (48), the owner of a sweet shop in Mira Road, after his staff responded to them in Hindi. The incident, which took place on Tuesday, was captured on video and widely circulated online. Chaudhary told the police that around 10.30 am, the men, wearing clothes with MNS insignia, entered his shop and asked for water. When his worker replied in Hindi, they objected, leading to verbal abuse. The argument escalated when Chaudhary said that his workers were from other states and not fluent in Marathi. The situation worsened when the men allegedly asked him which language is spoken in Maharashtra, and Chaudhary responded that all languages are spoken. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The attackers, reportedly angered by this response, assaulted him and filmed the incident. An FIR has been registered against seven unidentified men at the Kashimira police station under relevant sections of the IPC. MNS defends action, blames 'arrogant' attitude An MNS office-bearer defended the confrontation, saying their workers were celebrating the state government's rollback of a language policy resolution and went to the shop to buy water. 'The owner was arrogant and said that all languages are spoken in Maharashtra. This triggered the argument,' the leader claimed.
