From one 14 to another, White Sox great Konerko gets gift from Pope Leo XIV

CHICAGO (AP) — White Sox great Paul Konerko got a present from one No. 14 to another in honor of the 20th anniversary of the 2005 World Series championship run — a jersey signed by noted Chicago fan Pope Leo XIV.
Cardinal Blase Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago, presented Konerko a jersey with the new pontiff's signature on the back during a ceremony prior to the game against the Cleveland Guardians. It had the six-time All-Star's last name and 'Pope Leo' above the No. 14.

Robert Prevost became the first pope from the U.S. in the history of the Catholic Church when he was elected on May 8. The Chicago-born missionary, who took the name Leo XIV, is a White Sox fan.
Prevost attended the 2005 World Series opener against Houston in Chicago. He watched from Section 140, Row 19, Seat 2 as the White Sox beat the Astros 5-3 on the way to a four-game sweep and their first title since 1917.
In May, the team unveiled a graphic installation near the seat paying tribute to Pope Leo and that moment. The pillar artwork features a waving Pope Leo XIV, along with a picture from the TV broadcast of the future pope sitting with good friend Ed Schmit and his grandson, Eddie.
Members of the 2005 team are in Chicago this weekend to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the championship run. The White Sox debuted uniform patches honoring late closer Bobby Jenks, who died last week in Portugal, where he was being treated for stomach cancer. On Friday, the team unveiled a statue of former ace Mark Buehrle.

Hall of Fame Shortstop Urges Cubs to Make Moves Prior to Trade Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Things are beginning to feel like 2016 all over again in Chicago. The beloved Chicago Cubs entered the All-Star break 57-39, good for a season-best 18 games over .500 and the best record they've had at the break since 2016, when they won the World Series. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 14: Matthew Boyd #16, Pete Crow-Armstrong #4, and Kyle Tucker #30 of the Chicago Cubs pose outside the Coke-Cola Roxy Theatre during MLB All-Star workout day at Truist Park on July... ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 14: Matthew Boyd #16, Pete Crow-Armstrong #4, and Kyle Tucker #30 of the Chicago Cubs pose outside the Coke-Cola Roxy Theatre during MLB All-Star workout day at Truist Park on July 14, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. More Matt Dirksen/To some, though, the Cubs still may not have enough firepower to compete with the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter spoke Monday about the Cubs' success this season and what they will need to do prior to the trade deadline to hope even the playing field with the Dodgers. "Everyone asks, are the Cubs a contender? Of course they are," Jeter said during FOX Sports' MLB All-Star coverage. "If you're the Chicago Cubs you have to sit back over the next couple weeks before the playoffs and sit and say, are we good enough to beat the Dodgers in the postseason. If not, you've got to go out and get something. Even if you think you are, you've still got to go out and get something." Are the Cubs the best team in the National League?@derekjeter tells us if that is the case — FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) July 14, 2025 Jeter certainly makes a good point, as Chicago currently trails Los Angeles by a half-game for the best record in the National League. The two teams have already completed their season series and that saw the Cubs take four out of seven games from the Dodgers. It would appear that the Chicago front office is very aware of the need to improve at the trade deadline. It has been noted several times that Chicago is interested in trying to acquire at least one if not two starting pitchers such as Mitch Keller, Edward Cabrera or Lucas Giolito. The Cubs & the Pirates have been engaged in serious trade talks regarding RHP Mitch Keller for more than a week, per @BNightengale. Keller is currently in the second year of a five-year, $77 million contract. — Cubs Zone (@CubsZone) June 29, 2025 Improving the rotation is certainly a starting point, but it is likely that the Cubs will need to improve a couple other areas of the team to have a real chance of knocking off the reigning World Series champions. Potential Yankees Target Addresses Trade Rumors

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Eugenio Suarez is currently the hottest name being floated around as a potential trade candidate. The Diamondbacks' slugger has eclipsed thirty home runs in six of the last seven full seasons he's played in, making him a highly sought after player. SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - JULY 09: Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks reacts after hitting a solo homerun during the fourth inning of a game against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on July 09, 2025 in San Diego, California. More Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images One of the teams that has come up as a potential landing spot are the world-famous New York Yankees. Suarez spoke to several media members during All-Star Game availability on Monday, addressing the trade rumors and giving his thoughts on how he'd react to a trade. "Yankees are the Yankees," Suarez said in an SNY post on X. "It's a team that wants to win. They had a chance from last year and they're hungry still. If I got over there, I would do my best and try to help them win the World Series." Eugenio Suárez is asked about trade rumors, and the Yankees specifically: "It's a team that wants to win. They're hungry still. If I got over there, I would do my best and try to help them win the World Series." — Yankees Videos (@snyyankees) July 14, 2025 New York is certainly chasing a World Series victory, as it hasn't reached the top of the MLB mountain since it knocked off the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009. A trade for Suarez would be the first step in the right direction, as he would bring an incredible amount of power to a lineup that already features both Giancarlo Stanton and reigning MVP Aaron Judge. Eugenio Suarez feels like the most obvious trade deadline target for the Yankees — Talkin' Yanks (@TalkinYanks) July 11, 2025 Suarez is no stranger to being traded, as he has already been involved in trades three separate times in his career. He was moved from Detroit to Cincinnati, then Cincinnati to Seattle and finally Seattle to Arizona. A fourth trade from Arizona to New York could potentially be exactly what New York needs to not only reach the World Series in back-to-back seasons since the early 2000s but also win the World Series for the first time in 16 seasons. ‘Sullivan's Crossing' Dethroned In Netflix's Top 10 List By A New Show

Sullivan's Crossing It's Tuesday, and unlike Squid Game, a new show at #1 on Netflix's Top 10 list could not stand up to the behemoth that is Netflix's big Monday night program. That would of course be WWE Monday Night RAW, which has now unseated Netflix's big licensed hit, Sullivan's Crossing, which has ascended the ranks and become a rare, non-Netflix-original. Sullivan's Crossing has been planted at #1 for a while now, the low key, drama-romance series that originally aired on CTV and the CW airing two seasons on Netflix. Viewers can already watch season 3 of the series, but not on Netflix, rather on the CW site or app, which will be full of ads, but at least it's better than nothing. It should be on Netflix in August, however. Season 4 of Sullivan's Crossing is already greenlit, and presumably Netflix will snag that as well, given how well these first two seasons are performing. Top 10 Squid Game season 3 remains at #3 well after launch, no great surprise given its record-setting performance at release, and it continues to climb the overall most-watched charts on Netflix. It's been there so long it doesn't even have a 'new season' badge on it anymore. A new season of Quarterback, the Drive to Survive-for-the-NFL series, has now hit Netflix, coming in at #4 currently. This time around the show is following the lives and games of Joe Burrow, Jared Goff and Kirk Cousins over the course of last season. The first season did well, and this seems like a show that's going to air for quite a while here. The Waterfront, the original Netflix crime drama, is still in the top 5 at #5, and fans are still waiting for news about the show being renewed for a second season. As I've said before, I believe this is almost a sure thing, given its performance, but it can just take a while to get these sorts of things finalized, and I'm expecting we will hear something in the coming weeks. The final season of Sandman did not do amazingly well, down to #9 already, but that was the last one, so it doesn't exactly matter. One not-amazing story so far is the recent debut of Lena Dunham's comedy Too Much, which has arrived at #10, quite poor for a new series, and may drop off the list in short order. I expect Sullivan's Crossing to return to #1 soon, but how long it stays there is unclear. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.
