Teen crashes SUV into two at Verna, 1 dead, other critical
Vasco:
A 23-year-old woman Anisha Borkar died on the spot, while Akshata Naik was critically injured, when a speeding SUV driven by a teenager crashed into them when they were crossing the road at Verna on Saturday morning.
Borkar was a Quepem resident, while Naik is a resident of Ulga, Karwar.
The two women, are employed at Medizest, a pharmaceutical company, at IDC, Verna and were headed to their work place when the accident occurred.
Accused Jonathan Xavier Pereira (19), a resident of Agasaim and a student of Padre Conceicao College, Verna, was arrested by Verna police, under Sections 281, 125 (B), 106 (1) of BNS and Sections 196, 190 (2) of M V Act.
Police said the accident occurred at around 8.20am when the two women were crossing the main road near the Hyundai showroom at Verna, while the SUV was heading towards Margao from Panaji via the Titan junction.
The SUV was driven by the accused in a rash and negligent manner, police said.
PSI Pramila Fernandes is investigating further into the case under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar.

Bodies of woman, two sons found in Pune: family member held for murder
Two days after the bodies of a woman and her two children were found in a partially burnt condition near the Pune- Ahilyanagar Highway in Shirur taluka, the Pune Rural Police Saturday arrested her family member for allegedly murdering them. The woman identified as Swati Keshav Sonawane (25) and her sons Swaraj (2) and Viraj (1) were found murdered around 11 am on May 25 in Ranjangaon town. The arrested accused was identified as Gorakh Popat Bokhare (36), police said, adding that he was in a relationship with the woman. Police said Swati wanted to marry Gorakh, but he allegedly refused and killed her along with two sons. The accused was remanded in police custody till June 11 for further investigation. After the bodies were found on May 25, the initial probe and the autopsy revealed they were murdered before being set on fire to destroy the evidence. Accordingly, an FIR was lodged at the Ranjangaon MIDC police station under sections 103 (1), 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said on the front of the right hand of the woman, there was a tattoo of a heart shape followed by a heartbeat sign in the form of an ECG line, followed by words 'mom' and 'dad' in English. The right hand also had the words 'Jai Bhim' written in Marathi. On the back side of right hand there was a tattoo of the name 'Kartik' in Marathi, in addition to two heart signs with letters 'R' and 'S' written in those hearts and the name 'Rajratan' in English. Also, on her left hand there is a tattoo of a floral design. Seven police teams were formed to identify the deceased and their killer. There was no CCTV close to the spot where the bodies were found. But police checked videos from over 250 CCTVs from Wagholi in Pune to Rahuri in Ahilya Nagar district. Sandeep Singh Gill, Superintendent of Pune rural police, then formed 27 teams coordinated by inspector Avinash Shilimkar of local crime branch and inspector Mahadev Waghmode of Ranjangaon police station for probing this case. Information about missing persons cases was gathered from all districts and cities. Police then came across a missing woman report filed at Majalgaon police station in Beed district on May 9. Police said the description of the missing woman from Beed matched the body found at Ranjangaon. This led the police to identify the deceased woman as Swati Sonawane of Waghora village in Majalgaon, Beed. Investigation revealed that Swati had a dispute with her husband, who worked as a worker at a private place. She left her husband and went to her maternal house in Pune's Alandi along with her sons Swaraj and Viraj. Further probe revealed that Swati and her sons went along with her relative Gorakh Bokhare on a motorcycle around 9 pm on May 23 and then did not return. Police said Swati's parents working as labourers in Alandi were not aware of her location. Police then traced Gorakh, a native of Shrigonda in Ahilyanagar, currently residing at Saradwadi village in Shirur taluka. During interrogation, he allegedly admitted his involvement in the triple murder, police said. Probe revealed that Swati's sister is married to Gorakh's brother. Being family members, they knew each other. Police said when Swati and her husband had quarrels, Gorakh used to mediate and solve it. But in the meantime, Swati and Gorakh developed a relationship. Police said Swati asked Gorakh to marry her. But Gorakh was already married and had two children. So he refused to marry Swati and when she started insisting, he allegedly decided to kill her, police said. Accordingly, on May 23, he allegedly took Swati and her sons with him on a motorcycle from Alandi to Ranjangaon in the night hours. He allegedly murdered Swati and the two boys by strangulation, then stoned their faces and burnt their bodies with petrol for destroying evidence, stated a press release issued on Saturday. 'Gorakh worked as a driver on a private vehicle. He hails from Ahilyanagar, but had shifted to Shirur a few years before,' said Sandeep Singh Gill, during a press conference.

17 arrested for attacking cops in Azamgarh village
Seventeen people were arrested on Saturday for allegedly attacking several police officials in an Azamgarh village when the latter arrived there amid reports of a clash between two groups on Friday night, police said. The incident took place in the district's Barra, which falls under the jurisdiction of Bardah police station. Bardah station in-charge Rajiv Kumar Singh, sub-inspector Sanjay Kumar, head constable Vihgal Yadav, and constables Lalit Saroj, Anil Saroj, and Valmiki were grievously hurt in the assault, said a senior police official. While Singh was still under treatment at a hospital in the district for head injuries, the other four had been discharged, the official said. Azamgarh senior superintendent of police (SP) Hemraj Meena inspected the incident site after the assault. He stated that the officials went to the village after they were informed that a clash had erupted between two groups there over the playing of loud music. On the way, a police vehicle was stopped by a few people, who have been identified, who pelted the officials with bricks and stones, he added. Later, the station in-charge rushed and his team rushed to the spot, but they were also attacked with bricks and stones by more than 30 people, the SSP added. Additional police personnel were rushed to the village, who brought the situation under control. Based on the complaint of the S-I, a case was registered under sections 191(2) (rioting), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 109 (attempt to commit murder), 131 (assault), 121(1) (causing hurt), 121(2), 324(4) (mischief) 126(2) of the BNS, and the relevant sections of the CL Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act against 34 people for attacking the police officials, said the officer. Meena said strict action would be ensured against all the accused, adding teams had been pressed into service to ensure the arrest of the remaining accused.

Bengal: SIT files chargesheet against 13 in Murshidabad father-son murder case
Kolkata: The West Bengal Police's special investigation team (SIT) has reportedly named over 50 witnesses in its chargesheet against 13 people in connection with the April 12 murder of a 72-year-old man and his 40-year-old son at Jafrabad village in Murshidabad, police officers aware of the development said on Saturday. 'We have framed charges against 13 persons under various sections of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita), including 103(2) (murder committed by more than five persons particularly on grounds of caste and religion), 191(2) (rioting), and 310(2) (dacoity), along with some sections of the Arms Act,' a senior officer said, adding the police have over 50 witnesses, CCTV footages and telephone call details. Another senior police officer said that 11 of the 13 people named in the over 980-page chargesheet have already been arrested. Communal clashes had erupted following protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in some areas of Murshidabad district on April 11 and 12, leaving three persons dead. Houses and shops were looted and set on fire. Around 170 villagers had left their houses, and people took refuge in a relief camp in Malda across the Bhagirathi River. Three persons were killed, including 72-year-old Haragobindo Das and his son Chandan Das, who were hacked to death by a mob in Jafrabad. The Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central forces. More than 300 people were arrested in connection with over 60 first information reports (FIRs) at various police stations in Murshidabad. Union home minister Amit Shah, during his recent visit to the state, called the Murshidabad riots 'state-sponsored.' Earlier, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, during her visit to the district in May, had alleged that the clashes were egged on by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and that situations wouldn't have flared up on the second day had the border security force (BSF) not opened fire.
