Khalifa Award for Education honours 18th cycle winners
The ceremony was held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Presidential Court, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Khalifa Award for Education, one of the Zayed Charitable and Humanitarian Foundations initiatives.
He stressed education is a national priority and a cornerstone of the vision of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He noted the UAE's continued transformation in education, driven by AI integration across all levels and a deep-rooted culture of excellence.
He affirmed that education is instrumental in shaping future generations who are proud of their national identity and capable of adapting to scientific and technological progress.
Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees, presented the Distinguished Educational Personality trophy to His His Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who received it on behalf of His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed.
Humaid Al Houti, Secretary-General of the Khalifa Award for Education, highlighted the support of the UAE leadership in strengthening the educational sector, tracing its foundations to the UAE's Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He noted that nominations for this edition came from over 48 countries, including the US, UK, China, Argentina, France, Germany and many others.
Al Houti said the Distinguished Educational Personality Award remains a cornerstone of the Khalifa Award, honouring those with significant impact in advancing education systems. He concluded the ceremony by presenting a commemorative shield to Sheikh Mansour in appreciation of his continued support.

In Educational Research, Jordan's Dr Nasreen Al Jaafreh and Dr Sanaa Al Samadi were honoured for their study on AI-powered learning applications. Oman's Najwa Al Darawi won in Educational Writing for her story A Voyage to the Northern Realm.
Khalifa International Award for Early Learning winners included:
Best Research and Studies: Dr Alexander Eble (Columbia University, US); Dr Filipa De Castro (Save the Children US).

The UAE and Pakistan enjoy deep-rooted ties stretching back to the formation of the Emirates. About 1.7 million Pakistani citizens live in the Emirates, the second largest expatriate population in the country. Thousands of people took part in a large-scale Independence Day event held at Expo City Dubai on Sunday, which was attended by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence. Sheikh Mohamed regularly holds talks with Pakistan's leadership to help further bolster the robust partnership between the countries. In June, the head of state met Mr Sharif in Abu Dhabi.

Economic cooperation: Pakistan-UAE ties enter new era with $10 billion investment
Pakistan and the UAE have ushered in new era of robust economic cooperation after the signing of more than 30 Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) and Identity Governance and Administrations (IGAs) in past three years, a top diplomat says. Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, Ambassador of Pakistan to the UAE, said these agreements cover key sectors such as port operations, food security, logistics, banking and minerals. 'These agreements underscore the strategic depth and direction of our economic partnership. With trade volume surpassing $10 billion and growing mutual interest in ports and infrastructure sectors, we are clearly entering a new era of robust economic cooperation,' Tirmizi told Khaleej Times during an interview. He said the UAE has long been one of the key trading partners of Pakistan and the outlook for UAE-Pakistan trade and investment remains highly promising. The UAE is Pakistan's largest trading partner in the Middle East and third largest globally. 'We are actively following up with Abu Dhabi Ports (AD Ports) regarding implementation of MoUs signed with Pakistan under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) platform. We are also engaging with DP World for implementation of MoUs/IGAs pertaining to Karachi-Pipri DFC and development of economic zone. Both sides are determined to fast-track the implementation of these MoUs for mutual gain,' the ambassador said. More Deals on Cards Regarding more agreements are in the pipeline, he said: 'Yes, several MoUs are being actively considered in the fields of halal meat trade, artificial intelligence, science and technology and culture.' About the agreement on mutual exemption of entry visa requirements, the ambassador termed this a good initiative that will help facilitate the movement of official delegations and ultimately strengthen bilateral ties. 'Yes, this is a significant development. The MoU on mutual exemption of visas for diplomatic and official passport holders will enhance institutional cooperation between our two countries. It reflects the trust and strategic alignment at the highest levels of leadership. We expect the MoU will facilitate the movement of official delegations and result in further strengthening of our bilateral relations,' he said. To a question about the initiatives to promote cooperation in renewable energy, infrastructure development, hospitality, and tourism, he said these are priority areas and both sides are keen to strengthen their relationship in key sectors. 'We have made significant strides. In renewable energy, the visit of Dr Sultan Al Jaber to Pakistan led to the signing of an MoU for cooperation in clean energy, with a focus on solar and wind. On infrastructure, DP World and AD Ports Group have collaborated with our government on port modernisation and logistics development. 'In tourism, we resumed PIA's direct flights from Dubai to Skardu, a key step in promoting Pakistan as a destination for adventure and eco-tourism. These initiatives reflect our commitment to broadening the scope of bilateral cooperation,' he said. $10 Billion Investment Tirmizi said the announcement by the UAE of a $10 billion investment is a strong testament to the confidence in Pakistan's future. Since then, both sides have been working to identify bankable, high-impact projects in minerals, IT, banking, railway, Special Economic Zones, ports operations and logistics. 'Our coordination with the UAE Ministry of Investment under the SIFC framework is ongoing. Several of these proposals are under active evaluation, and we are hopeful that 2025 will see concrete progress.' To a question, he said negotiations on Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (Cepa) have progressed well. 'Both sides are fully committed to concluding the agreement. Once the Cepa is signed, I am confident that it will unlock new avenues for trade and investment partnerships between Pakistan and the UAE,' the ambassador said. Progress on GCC FTA In reply to a question about the prospects for the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Gulf nations, he said the GCC-Pakistan FTA is progressing positively. 'A preliminary agreement was signed in 2023, and subsequent rounds of negotiation ongoing. Once implemented, it will significantly boost Pakistan's trade with GCC,' he said. 'This will offer promising prospects for forging a robust economic partnership capable of unlocking significant opportunities for both Pakistan and the GCC.' Elaborating, he said GCC countries import food textile and other manufactured goods, offering vast opportunities for Pakistan's agriculture and food-processing sectors besides textiles and apparels. 'The GCC-Pakistan FTA will reduce customs duties on goods and services while the cooperation chapters will include energy, health, food security, agriculture, transport, environment, culture, and education,' he said. Scope for Skilled Workforce Tirmizi said the UAE is no longer a market for unskilled workers and Pakistanis should do their research before coming to the emirate. 'It's true that the UAE job market has evolved. There is now a strong demand for professionals in fields like IT, AI, fintech, healthcare, aviation and engineering. My advice to job seekers is clear: > Avoid traveling on a tourist visa to search for jobs. > Instead, apply through proper employment channels. > Enhance your skills, learn English, get certified, and acquire specialised > training. > Verify job offers through the Bureau of Emigration or our missions. > Understand UAE laws and cultural norms. 'We do run awareness campaigns and advise our community from time to time. We have recently developed a 14-minute comprehensive tutorial video to guide potential migrants. It's available on our Embassy's official Facebook page and provides practical, detailed instructions for safe and legal migration,' Tirmizi concluded. NEW INITIATIVES LAUNCHED New initiatives and reforms launched to facilitate visitors and applicants visiting the Embassy and the Consulate: · A one-window operation in the passport section · Same-day processing of attested documents (within an hour) · Online appointment booking via Nadra. · WhatsApp support line for prompt responses · Home delivery of passports · 24/7 availability/ response for emergency services (e.g. Death cases NoC/ Out pass) · And importantly, renovation of Dubai consulate building to improve comfort, capacity, and overall service quality. 'Our missions have undertaken significant improvements in recent months. We have introduced a new token system for document processing, created a dedicated WhatsApp helpline and modernised our consular halls,' Tirmizi said. 'Passport and Nadra's online submission along with prior appointment system for visits, and home delivery service have helped reduce congestion. Moreover, we've plans for renovation of the consulate building in Dubai to better accommodate the growing number of visitors,' he said. HIGH POTENTIAL SECTORS Tirmizi sees strong potential in several emerging sectors such as shipping and logistics, banking and fintech, including Islamic finance and digital remittances, mining and rare minerals, where Pakistan has vast untapped reserves, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, railways and aviation. 'These are sectors where both countries possess complementary strengths, and we're actively working to channel this synergy into tangible partnerships,' he said, and adding that the following sectors can attract investment in Pakistan by showcasing their real potential to the UAE. · Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals · Surgical Instruments · Export of skilled HR (especially in healthcare, finance, technical, hospitality) · Mining and Minerals · Logistics and Transport Infrastructure · Real Estate and Urban Development · Manufacturing and Pakistan's Special Economic Zones · Environmental Services and climate change financing. Investment opportunity: Boost Pakistani education in UAE schools
Pakistani investors and businesses should come forward to set up new schools catering to the Pakistani curriculum across the UAE as more students await new admissions every year, says a senior diplomat. Hussain Muhammad, Consul-General of Pakistan Consulate, Dubai, said there is indeed a significant demand for more schools catering to the Pakistani curriculum in the UAE, particularly in Dubai and the Northern Emirates. 'We are actively engaging with established Pakistani school networks to encourage them to expand operations in the UAE. We also highlight this opportunity to Pakistani investors, urging them to enter this sector, which has both community and commercial benefits,' Muhammad told Khaleej Times during an interview. 'Through platforms such as Khaleej Times, which is widely read by our community and businesspeople, I am inviting the private sector to explore this high-demand area. Investing in education is not only financially rewarding but also a meaningful contribution to the welfare of our next generation,' he said. Pakistani schools in the UAE continue to serve the large Pakistani expatriate community, estimated at over 1.5 million, primarily following the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) curriculum from Pakistan. These schools are spread across emirates like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, and Al Ain, offering affordable education to thousands of students. They emphasize Pakistani culture, Islamic studies, and Urdu language alongside academic programmes, with some integrating Cambridge subjects or hybrid curricula. Excerpts from the interview: As Consul-General, welfare of the Pakistani community in Dubai and Northern Emirates is your top priority. What steps have you introduced for the community? Pakistan Consulate General in Dubai serves the Pakistani community residing in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, which numbers between 1.3 to 1.5 million. Their welfare is, without doubt, our top priority. We have worked consistently to improve service delivery in key areas such as the issuance and renewal of passports and national identity cards, along with a wide range of consular services including document verification, attestation, and powers of attorney. We also extend legal assistance where possible, particularly in matters linked to Pakistan. The consulate also receives requests for assistance in repatriating the bodies of community members who have passed away. Recognising the urgency and emotional weight of such cases, I have instructed our welfare team to treat them as emergencies. A monthly duty roster ensures staff availability 24/7, without leave, for the issuance of death NOCs so that bereaved families can proceed with repatriation without unnecessary delays. Additionally, our welfare team undertakes weekly visits to all prisons across Dubai and the Northern Emirates to check on Pakistani inmates. These visits ensure they are receiving appropriate legal and consular assistance. Detailed reports from these visits are submitted to senior officers for oversight, enabling us to follow up effectively on individual cases. What are the major challenges faced by the consulate while addressing issues of the Pakistani community? The consulate operates within the framework of UAE laws and regulations, which we fully respect. However, community members sometimes expect us to intervene in matters beyond our jurisdiction such as financial fraud disputes, civil litigation, or contractual disagreements. In such cases, we guide applicants to approach the appropriate UAE legal forums, as these matters are best resolved through the local judicial system. Another challenge is that some community members request financial support for paying fines or legal expenses. While we cannot cover these expenses, we do provide free legal advice to those in need through a law firm engaged on a monthly retainership. This ensures that Pakistanis facing legal difficulties have access to professional guidance without incurring legal consultation fees. The present building of consulate is unable to handle visiting Pakistani expats. When do you think the consulate will be able to start the construction of a new building? I completely agree that the current consulate building does not meet the needs of our growing community. The structure is old and lacks the space required to deliver services efficiently. We are following up for the construction of a new building, which is currently under consideration by the relevant authorities in Pakistan. I am optimistic about receiving a positive decision, after which we will be able to move forward with the planning and execution. Many Pakistani brands and businesses expand their presence in the UAE and Gulf region. How do you facilitate Pakistani businessmen and investors? We provide Pakistani entrepreneurs and investors with market insights, networking opportunities, and facilitation to connect with potential partners in the UAE. The consulate's Trade & Investment Section acts as a bridge between Pakistani businesses and the UAE's thriving commercial sector. We work closely with business councils, such as the Pakistan Business Council Dubai and the Pakistan Business Council Sharjah, as well as with local chambers of commerce. This collaboration allows us to help Pakistani businesses navigate the UAE market, identify potential sectors for investment, and explore joint ventures that can lead to sustainable commercial partnerships. Dubai hosts several events and trade exhibitions every year. How do you facilitate Pakistani companies and businesses to participate in these exhibitions to secure export orders and promote Pakistani products? Dubai has established itself as a hub for global trade, attracting businesses from all over the world. The consulate, through its Trade & Investment Section and with the support of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), facilitates the participation of Pakistani companies in these prestigious exhibitions, particularly those held at Dubai World Trade Centre. Our role is to ensure that Pakistani exporters can use these platforms to their advantage. We help them secure exhibition space, guide them on presenting their products effectively, and connect them with buyers and distributors. These events have proven to be highly productive; many Pakistani companies have secured export orders and signed agreements directly because of participating in these exhibitions. Such exposure not only boosts sales but also positions Pakistan as a competitive player in the international marketplace. Some Pakistani expats need legal assistance to get out of financial and civil court cases. How does the consulate bail out applicants seeking legal help? The Consulate General of Pakistan in Dubai has retained the services of a law firm on a monthly basis to provide free legal consultations to our community. The firm's lawyers visit the consulate twice a week to meet with applicants and offer professional advice on their cases. This service covers a range of legal matters, both civil and criminal. Over the last three years, we have provided legal advice to 1,396 individuals through this arrangement. While we cannot pay legal representation fees or fines, our free advisory service helps Pakistanis understand their legal position, explore possible solutions, and approach their cases with confidence.
