China's Chery denies improper subsidy declarations

A government audit disqualified declarations by Chinese carmakers Chery and BYD for a combined S$67.8 million in government subsidies.
SHANGHAI - Chinese automaker Chery on July 12 denied assertions that it had improperly claimed government subsidies for environmentally friendly vehicles.
An audit by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology
disqualified declarations by Chery and BYD for a combined US$53 million (S$67.8 million) in government subsidies for thousands of vehicles sold in the five years to 2020, accounting for nearly 60 per cent of such improper claims.
Chery denied its declarations were improper.
It said in a statement it had previously consulted the authorities about the challenges of missing receipts because the cars were sold more than five years ago and that the government had advised the company to declare the cars for the ministry to determine if they should be qualified.
'Our company has truthfully reported to the authorities we did not collect certificates for end sales; there's no fraudulent act,' Chery said in the statement.
The government's assertions do not include allegations of fraud.
EV maker BYD did not respond to requests for comment.

The audit, initiated earlier this year to verify subsidy applications over the five-year period, disqualified 21,725 vehicles for subsidies as it found discrepancies such as failure to submit required supporting documents or to meet the mandated mileage thresholds, according to the documents published by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in June.
Chery had 7,663 vehicles disqualified - 19 for mileage thresholds and 7,643 for not providing certificates.
The audit documents did not lay out any penalties or mention reimbursement.
The government has previously said automakers will have to repay subsidies for vehicles found not to have met mileage requirements.
Chery said the audit covered declarations for subsidies that were not prepaid and thus automakers did not need to repay. REUTERS

After Mr Trump went public with his plan by posting on social media, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum noted in speeches near the northern border that every country has been getting a letter from Mr Trump as he implements global protectionist policies. Her team had already begun discussions with the US on July 11 and she was confident Mexico would get a deal. 'We've had some experience with these things for several months now,' Ms Sheinbaum said at a clinic opening in Ensenada, Baja California. 'And I think we're going to reach an agreement with the United States government.' Mexico-US relations have taken a bumpy turn since June, with increasing roundups of migrants by US agents, the border shuttered to livestock due to a screwworm infestation in Mexico , US Attorney-General Pam Bondi's reference to the neighbouring country as an adversary, and the financial strike by the US Treasury on three Mexican financial firms accused of aiding fentanyl traffickers. Mexico is still in a favourable position relative to the rest of the world and its poised to benefit from protectionist US policies over the medium term, according to Bloomberg Economic's Felipe Hernandez. That outlook assumes the US does not apply the 30 per cent rate to goods that are compliant with the US-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) free trade agreement. That exception is part of the plan, but the situation remains fluid, a US official cautioned. Continuing the exclusion for both Mexico and Canada narrows the scope of Mr Trump's continental tariffs and would be a lifeline to sectors like the auto industry that rely heavily on the USMCA pact, which was renegotiated under Mr Trump's first term. Mexico and the US established a new binational working group on July 11 to address security, migration and economic issues, according to a statement posted on July 12 by Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard on X. The first major task of the group will be to find an alternative to the tariffs and 'protect jobs on both sides of the border', the statement read. 'We told the group that this treatment is unfair and that we're not in agreement,' read the statement, jointly signed by the Economy and the Foreign Affairs ministries. The US president said the 30 per cent tariffs are separate from sectoral ones and could be raised if Mexico retaliates. 'Mexico still has not stopped the Cartels who are trying to turn all of North America into a Narco-Trafficking Playground,' Mr Trump wrote. 'If Mexico is successful in challenging the Cartels and stopping the flow of Fentanyl, we will consider an adjustment to this letter.' On July 11, the son of Sinaloa drug cartel kingpin Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman Loera pleaded guilty to federal drug trafficking charges and agreed to cooperate with US prosecutors. The US has blamed the Sinaloa Cartel for leading the fentanyl trade, importing chemicals from China to make pills in Mexico and smuggle them into the US. On July 9, US Treasury extended a deadline that will cut off three Mexican financial firms from the US financial system for potentially aiding in money laundering from the fentanyl trade. [LONDON] At a private markets conference focused on the ultra-rich in London last week, the typically discreet sector was notably candid about its growing interest in private credit. 'We like selective parts of alternative credit,' said Harinder Hundle, managing partner of multi-family office Hundle, on a panel at the London Private Markets Meeting. 'We can see it generates yield and income for investors and that's great in the current environment.' Family offices represent a vast pool of capital – around US$3.1 trillion globally as at 2024 – and are increasingly seeking new sources of returns as private equity distributions slow. Private credit, unlike private equity, does not rely on an exit to return money, but rather, throws cash off regularly through quarterly or even monthly interest payments. The burgeoning US$1.6 trillion asset class is expanding its sources of cash as traditional buyers, including pension funds and endowments, become fully allocated to the sector. Posing less risk than an equity portfolio, private credit funds are also producing high single digit returns, according to the Cliffwater Direct Lending Index, just shy of the roughly 10 per cent performance of the S&P 500, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Family offices also typically have a buy-and-hold mentality, making them comfortable with an illiquid asset class such as private credit. Volatility in public markets is also increasing the appeal of privately held assets. In a November 2024 survey by BNY Wealth, single family offices reported allocating more than one quarter of their portfolios to private equity – the largest share among asset classes. Private credit did not make the top three. To be sure, the influx of capital does not come without concerns, as firms worry about the huge sums of capital the largest private-equity asset managers have amassed. 'We think that's potentially a material problem in financial markets,' said Hundle. 'There's so much crossover between managers on the largest deals so I worry about the closed environment of these deals.' Nevertheless, the overall direction of travel for the ultra-rich is clear. The 2025 BlackRock Family Office Survey shows a third of respondents wanted to increase their allocations to private credit, the highest of any asset class. BLOOMBERG
