Move over, Dickie! Meet Channel Nine's rising new star anchor who could take Richard Wilkins' job - and the ladies are already swooning

Daily Mail03-07-2025
It appears that Channel Nine could have a rising star on its hands.
Aspiring TV presenter Chaad Hewitt caused quite a stir recently, when he made an appearance on the Today show.
After wowing Karl Stefanovic with his anchor chops in a university assignment, Chaad found himself front and centre on the Today set recently.
He shared a clip of his on-air experience that saw him stepping into the rather large shoes of Nine entertainment veteran Richard Wilkins.
'Today we found an aspiring entertainment journo and if you squint he looks like a young Richard Wilkins,' Karl said on air.
From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop.
A side-by-side photo was then shown on screen, highlighting the similarities between the pair.
'Somebody needs to do the math, because my mum worked at MTV in the '90s so what's going on there?' Chaad joked, referencing Richard's stint at the music television station.
'Who's your daddy?' Karl excitedly asked, which elicited quite the laugh from the rising star.
Chaad was full of gratitude for his big television break.
'WHAT AN HONOUR to share my first full day of learning as an anchor with the team @thetodayshow,' he wrote on Instagram.
'I couldn't have asked for a more special experience with the amazing team and mentors. While sharing the stage in place of Dicky, this little moment caught us all off.'
Despite Chaad's anchor gig only being temporary, it seems he has struck a chord with breakfast TV viewers.
Karl commented on a clip of Chaad on air with: 'Loved having you, son,' to which one viewer replied: 'He needs to be a regular.'
'Today we found an aspiring entertainment journo and if you squint he looks like a young Richard Wilkins,' Karl said on air
Another chimed in with: 'Never has there been a man more suited to the screen.'
'From now on, I love watching the news,' a third swooned.
It looks as though Dickie might have to start looking over his shoulder, with Chaad already a triple threat.
Aside from being an aspiring entertainment reporter, Chaad is also a model, after being discovered by Gold Coast agency Reel Management in 2020, and has since worked with the likes of BOSS and Polo Ralph Lauren.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Chaad is also a budding actor, having hit the stage for the Queensland Drama Academy in Flood.
He also nabbed a gig as actor Stacy Clausen's stand-in for the 2023 film True Spirit.
Chaad recently revealed that his Today show stint all came about thanks to a university assignment.
The second-year journalism student at Bond University posted an after-class exercise to social media that attracted half a million views.
After seeing the video, Karl reached out with an offer for the rising star to appear on the show.
'Karl said, 'I want to bring you on the Today show'. To be honest with you, I thought he was joking… I didn't think he was being serious.'
Turns out Karl was deadly serious with Chaad adding: 'Karl actually said, 'you can be the anchor!' In a matter of about two hours, they had everything sorted.'
He also revealed that his Today cameo did the trick with the network, with Nine keen to stay in touch.

Channel Ten star Angela Bishop pays tribute to late actor David Argue - and reveals her VERY surprising connection to him

Channel Ten star Angela Bishop has paid a heartfelt tribute to late Australian actor David Argue, following his shock passing earlier this week. In her heartfelt tribute, Angela, 57, reminisced about her unique encounter with Argue, revealing an unexpected connection forged on the set of his 1983 movie BMX Bandits. 'Sad to hear of the passing of David,' Angela began, before acknowledging his memorable performances across a celebrated career. 'Many will remember him from The Restless Years, Razorback, or for his great portrayal of Snowy in the 1981 movie Gallipoli.' She then revealed her surprising connection to the iconic actor. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'I'll always remember getting to watch him work when I was an extra on the set of BMX Bandits,' she wrote. 'You'll see a blurry shot of us outside the old Waterworks at Manly where we filmed. He was playing a classic baddie, and didn't mind having a bit of fun with it. Whatever role he played, he made sure it was memorable. Vale.' Accompanying her tribute, she shared a sweet throwback photo from the early '80s, capturing a teenage Angela gazing in awe at David during the filming of BMX Bandits, starring a young Nicole Kidman. The photo showcased David in character, embodying his trademark charisma even off-screen. It follows the news that the legendary actor, best known for his roles in Gallipoli, BMX Bandits and Razorback, died at 65. The Melbourne-born star passed away following a battle with cancer. One of Australia's most recognisable character actors, David played the hapless criminal Whitey in the 1983 film BMX Bandits alongside Nicole Kidman. Along with Moustache and The Boss, Whitey launches a plot to nab $1.5million in a payroll heist, kicking off the action in the Aussie blockbuster. Following his studies at NIDA, David made his on-screen debut in 1977 as Sunny Martin in the Australian soap opera, The Restless Years. He also had a career-defining role in the classic Australian WWI film Gallipoli, playing the laconic Snowy alongside stars Mel Gibson and Mark Lee. Following his stint playing Nicole's antagonist, David took on many big screen roles including 1985's The Coca Cola Kid and the 1993 spoof Hercules Returns. His other credits include Cop Shop, The Sullivans, Special Squad, Winners, Cluedo, Stark, Newlyweds, Halfway Across the Galaxy and Turn Left, Correlli, and Water Rats. Last year, he announced through a GoFundMe campaign that due to his health issues, including cancer, walking had become increasingly difficult for him. He requested assistance to purchase a mobility scooter, describing himself as an, 'Icon, Legend Enemy to himself and Burden to his friends!' The Victorian Actors Benevolent Trust was among those to pay tribute. 'David was a remarkably talented and much-loved actor,' their statement read. 'He had the rare gift of making any character he played utterly unique and totally believable. In recent years, as David's health declined, the VABT was able to provide much needed assistance and emotional support. 'In return, David had no hesitation in championing our work, most recently with a deeply personal and humorous reflection at our Trivia Fundraiser.

Seismic threat of R360 rebel league looms large over Lions' shot at history

Sydney has been the epicentre of the rugby world this week. Senior executives from across the global game are in town. You would call them 'suits' but some are wearing British & Irish Lions hoodies. Hotel lobbies and breakfast rooms are abuzz with conversation and one of the main topics is R360, the proposed new global franchise competition. R360 representatives, including Mike Tindall, are also in Sydney, working towards their target of signing pre-contract agreements with 200 major players by September. Kalyn Ponga and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck are among the NRL stars on their shopping list, as well as the biggest names in rugby union. All of this is taking place before the third Test between the Lions and Australia; a new concept butting up against the old. The impact on the rugby landscape will be seismic if R360 takes off — and it is accelerating down the runway. The Lions have survived professionalism as a 'beautiful anachronism', as the chairman Ieuan Evans describes it, by becoming a commercial behemoth. There will be 40,000 Lions fans at the Accor Stadium on Saturday; here for the rugby and the craic. Not necessarily in that order. But could the Lions survive R360, which is due to be launched next summer? Will the traditions of the Lions, which stretch back 137 years and generate emotions like nothing else in sport, become more or less important in a world of sponsored franchises and million-pound contracts? Will there be space in the calendar for a ten-game, six-week tour? The World Rugby executives milling around Sydney will have some big decisions to make on the direction of the sport if the R360 venture flies. The landscape could look very different in four years' time when the Lions are due to tour New Zealand. Not that Andy Farrell, the head coach, could bring himself to consider anything beyond this third Test. His only concession to the future will be getting back to Dublin in time to see Oasis at Croke Park, where he has eschewed VIP treatment to be 'in the mixer'. Farrell's favourite Oasis song is Talk Tonight, which contains the line: 'You took your last chance, once again.' When Farrell was assistant coach in 2013, the Lions won the deciding Test against Australia to take the series 2-1. This time, they head into the final game having already claimed the series but harbouring ambitions for a 3-0 clean sweep that were laid out when the squad first came together in Dublin. The Lions have not won every Test match on tour since their visit to Argentina in 1927. Before that, it was 1891 in South Africa with a team originally called England, despite containing four Scots, before being retrospectively recognised as the British Isles. 'I never think you should shy away from shooting for the stars because you might land on the moon. That's pretty good as well,' Farrell said. '[Targeting 3-0] sets the mentality in my mind of what delivering means and you've always got a level to aim at. 'What's there to be shy at? Players, coaches, staff, Lions fans want to win every game. You can't be frightened of that.' Farrell's team selection supports his vision. The players are tired, entering the 12th month of the season. Tommy Freeman sat out Friday's captain's run, raising some late concerns over his availability for the Test. R360 would only be an 18-game campaign. You can see the temptation; you can see why Lions players are understood to have signed up. Farrell could have rotated the squad and given a few of his committed tourists the chance to win a Test cap. But no. None of them wanted to be stood down. He will have used only 27 players across three Tests. Blair Kinghorn comes into the starting XV on merit, for James Lowe, and the bench is reconfigured into a 6-2 split, with Ben Earl back in the 23. The only other tweak from last week's 29-26 win in Melbourne is James Ryan and Ollie Chessum swapping roles, with the Ireland lock promoted to start; seen as a better option against Will Skelton's brute physicality, although overall the Wallabies are a weaker side than seven days ago. Skelton has lost his bruise brothers in Rob Valetini and Allan Alaalatoa, who were both prominent carriers in the first half last week as the Wallabies opened a 23-5 lead, before being withdrawn injured at half-time. Australia have also lost both hookers — Dave Porecki and Matt Faessler — injured in training on Thursday. Farrell is going for the kill. 'We came here and wanted to win a series. We've achieved that but we have a massive responsibility to make sure that we finish this off with something that we promised ourselves,' he said of a clean sweep. 'It's a big ask but it's something that we're determined to do. It would mean the world to us.' The Lions means the world to a lot of people. R360's plan is for new teams with star names, targeting the big-event sports fans who want to watch Ardie Savea in the afternoon and Ariana Grande in the evening. It will be more entertainment than emotion. Nothing wrong with that, per se. The Lions hits different. Tadhg Furlong has been close to tears this week as he considers the prospect of his three-tour Lions journey coming to an end. The Ireland prop will start his ninth consecutive Test on Saturday. No one in the professional era has achieved more. 'I've heard a lot of people explain Lions tours. I probably haven't found an explanation in a verbal form that matches how you feel about it as a player,' the 32-year-old Irish prop said. 'It's a special thing, it really is — from all aspects. Sometimes the last memory is the lasting memory you have in a jersey. I want it to be a good one.' Furlong has played every one of his Lions Tests alongside Maro Itoje, who was a replacement in the opening game in 2017 and is now a series-winning captain. Itoje had a go at trying to articulate the emotions. 'You only have one shot at it. The next tour is never guaranteed. You may never have another opportunity,' he said. 'It's amazing to win in that environment with that group of people. In many ways, it shouldn't really work. You have four different nations; four different ideologies; several different ways of how to play the game and how to think. It is not a homogenous group at all, but people buy in and you forge great relationships with people and you build bonds. 'That's what makes it special. To gain the respect of quality players and to respect your fellow quality players is special.' The Lions generate a following like nothing else in world sport. Supporters from four rival nations save for years to fly across the world in their tens of thousands, to sing each other's songs and to be part of a community that is built around this 'beautiful anachronism'. Owen Slot wrote a moving piece before the first Test about a group of five pals from Wales who have each been carrying a small urn around Australia containing the ashes of a friend who died before the tour. On Thursday night, Itoje was presented with his Test jersey by Kate Hardman, who has incurable stage four breast cancer and is following the tour in a caravan with her husband, Kriss, and three children. They have 'Strength In Adversity' emblazoned on their vehicle. Kian, their eldest son, was a Lions mascot at the MCG, where he walked out with Itoje. Farrell then sent the family an invitation to attend the presentation ceremony on Thursday and he asked Kate to do the honours. 'I'm shaking,' she said after receiving the message. Kate spoke to the players about the impact they'd had on the travelling supporters. Australia may need to win this game more than the Lions, given the state of rugby union down under. But Itoje and his men are playing for the Hartmans; they are playing for a 3-0 win; they are playing for a slice of Lions history, so the legend of this team can live forever. The future, whatever it looks like, can wait. After they finished making a reboot of The Naked Gun, Liam said of co-star Pam: 'I'm madly in love with her.' He also quipped that his favourite part of shooting the cop movie spoof, which opened on August 1, 2025, was 'the sex scenes'. The couple were given an intimacy co-ordinator for those shots, with Liam adding: 'I'd never had one before. But she was in the background. There was no kind of, 'OK! Excuse me!'" While Pamela said of her co-star: 'I think I have a friend for ever in Liam and we definitely have a connection that is very sincere, very loving, and he's a good guy.' She added: 'He really is a silly guy. He acts like a silly little boy sometimes.' Their relationship lasted roughly two years, from 2010 to 2012. They reportedly parted ways reportedly because Liam wanted to focus more on his family. In 2012, a source told the Mail: "Liam is heading back to America at the start of next month to work on his new film Non-Stop. "He told Freya that he wants to take a break and concentrate on his family." They met while starring together in the Broadway production of Anna Christie in 1993. Following Natasha's divorce from her previous husband, the filmmaker Robert Fox, she and Liam wed in 1994. They had two sons together — Micheal, born in 1995, and Daniel, who followed a year later in 1996 Their marriage lasted until Natasha's tragic death in 2009, following a skiing accident in Quebec. Liam frequently visits her gravesite and maintains a heartfelt emotional connection. In 2020, Liam told Entertainment Inquirer: 'I speak to her every day at her grave which is about a mile and half down the road. 'I go down there quite often, so I do speak to her as if she's here. Not that she answers me." Brooke Shields (1992) 6 Liam Neeson and Brooke Shields dated before he married his wife Natasha Richardson Credit: Getty Liam Neeson dated Brooke Shields in early 1992, a relationship the American actress detailed in her 2014 memoir There Was a Little Girl. She recalled: "He wooed me with his brogue, his poetry, and his shitty choice of cheap pinot grigio wine." The relationship grew serious quickly and, according to Brooke, Liam proposed to her twice before they parted ways at the end of 1992. Their romance ended after Neeson flew to Los Angeles for the holidays and did not maintain contact, though he later called and proposed again, which Brooke declined, presciently predicting he would fall for his next leading lady. In her memoir, Brooke wrote that they got serious after a few months and Liam proposed "without a ring". In November 2014, she told People: "He came back after the first time he left me and asked me to marry him again. 'This was before he started to do a play [Anna Christie]. "And I said, 'No, no, no, because knowing you, you'll probably fall in love with your next leading lady and marry her, so I'm leaving myself out of this.' And I was dead right.'' The leading lady in the play was Natasha Richardson. Rumoured relationships (1988–1992) There have been rumours of Liam Neeson dating several other singing and acting A-listers. He reportedly dated Barbra Streisand from September 1991 to 1992, although they kept things private. Liam was also romantically linked with Julia Roberts, Janice Dickinson and Sinéad O'Connor, though these reports were never confirmed publicly. Helen Mirren (1981–1985) 6 Liam Neeson and Dame Helen Mirren were in a serious relationship in the 80s Credit: Getty Liam Neeson's notable early romance was with actress Helen Mirren. They met while filming the 1981 movie Excalibur and began dating shortly thereafter. Their relationship was serious — they lived together in London for about four years until they parted company sometime around 1985. Despite ending their romantic relationship, they have maintained a respectful and amicable connection over the years. In February 2023, Liam told Entertainment Tonight Canada: 'Helen is a remarkable woman, a remarkable actress. 'I should be so lucky and be honoured to have spent three or four years with that lady. She's really something else.'
