Himanta Biswa Sarma's 'Pak Link' Jab To Gaurav Gogoi After Pahalgam Speech
On Tuesday Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi delivered a fierce speech in Parliament on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, asking questions of the government's military strategy and demanding transparency about the number of Indian fighter jets shot down by Pakistan.
On Wednesday Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma threatened to transfer an ongoing state inquiry - into 'links' between the Congress leader's wife and a Pak-based non-governmental organisation - to the federal anti-terror body, the National Investigation Agency.
Mr Sarma said the SIT, or special investigative team, formed by his government believes a 'deeper' inquiry into the 'links' between the Gogois and Pakistan is necessary.
The Chief Minister said he may recommend the NIA take over later this year.
The threat followed comments by Home Minister Amit Shah and Dilip Saikia, a Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Assam, in Parliament. The former accused Mr Gogoi of having travelled to Pak and the latter targeted his wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, of being 'on the payroll' of that country.
As justification Mr Saikia claimed Pak media reports- as part of reportage on the Parliament session - used parts of his speech in articles critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mr Gogoi later responded to Amit Shah's attacks, saying, "I went to Pakistan before Modiji went to Pakistan to eat biryani... I don't know why he (Amit Shah) brought that up."
"Today was the time for the present government to accept its failures. Instead... Amit Shah ji wanted to hide his failures behind the valour and the patriotism of the Indian military."
Mr Shah, meanwhile, responded sharply to Mr Gogoi's comments about Pak infiltrators and said, "You have been to Pak many times, Gogoi... ever been to the border?"
The Assam Chief Minister pounced quickly, posting excerpts from Mr Shah and Mr Saikia's speeches on X and accusing the Congress leader of 'aligning with Pakistani interests'.
Adarniya Griha Mantri Shri @AmitShah ji reiterated what we have been saying all along- पाकिस्तान तो कई बार गए हो, कभी हमारे जवानों की हित में भी बात कर लो। pic.twitter.com/qeMXhxYFsl

"The speech delivered by our MP from Jorhat in Parliament yesterday proved beyond doubt he acts on behalf of Pakistan," Mr Sarma said on X, and dragged Mr Gogoi's children into the attack, "... and with his wife and both kids holding foreign citizenship, he can leave India any time."
Earlier Mr Sarma - once a close aide of Mr Gogoi's father and former Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi - had set a deadline of September 10 to reveal "damning" allegations, i.e., Ms Gogoi was involved in gathering confidential information relating to national security.
In May Mr Gogoi slammed the allegations and accused the Chief Minister of lying. Mr Gogoi acknowledged his trip to Pakistan but said that was 15 years ago, when he was not a MP.

Afghan FM's Pak visit blocked by US over UN travel ban waiver: Reports
The United States blocked a planned visit by Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to Pakistan by refusing to approve a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) travel ban exemption, according to a report by Dawn. US decision is believed to have been influenced by concerns over the Taliban government's growing closeness with China.(AP File Photo) According to Dawn, Muttaqi was scheduled to visit Pakistan on August 4 as part of a recent push to improve relations between Kabul and Islamabad. The engagement followed Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar's earlier visit to Kabul, which had been facilitated by China. Citing diplomatic sources, Dawn said that as the Afghan foreign minister is under international sanctions, he is barred from foreign travel without a special waiver from the UN sanctions committee. The committee, set up under UNSC Resolution 1988 (2011), oversees travel bans, asset freezes, and arms embargoes on Taliban-linked figures. The Dawn report stated that Washington delayed its decision until the last moment before ultimately refusing to grant the waiver, effectively scuttling the trip. Dawn noted that the US decision is believed to have been influenced by concerns over the Taliban government's growing closeness with China. When asked at a recent briefing whether the US had blocked Muttaqi's travel, the State Department said, "We do not comment on rumours," Dawn reported. Pakistan's Foreign Office, however, did not directly confirm the US role. At a weekly media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan told reporters there were "certain procedural issues" being worked out and maintained that no official dates had been confirmed for Muttaqi's visit. As quoted by Dawn, he added, "Once these procedural matters are resolved, we look forward to welcoming the Afghan foreign minister to Pakistan." The Dawn report also highlighted that the US has often clashed with China and Russia in the UNSC sanctions committee, with Beijing and Moscow supporting more lenient travel exemptions for Taliban officials.

US tariffs: India set to bounce back bolstered by strategic reforms, robust domestic demand
New Delhi: As India-US trade talks stall, the resilience of India's economy is a cornerstone of its ability to weather these tariff pressures with minimal disruption as over the past decade, the country has transformed into a diversified economic powerhouse, bolstered by strategic reforms and robust domestic demand. According to BJP national spokesperson Tuhin Sinha, the trade talks, initially aimed at fostering mutual economic benefits, descended into a stalemate as the US pressed India with ambitious and arguably unrealistic demands. "Trump's administration sought extensive market access for American agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, and technology services, while imposing steep tariffs on Indian exports such as steel, aluminium, textiles, and IT services. These tariffs, coupled with demands that threatened India's domestic stakeholders, were met with resolute resistance from India, under the steadfast leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," he emphasised in an opinion piece that appeared in NDTV. He further stated that committed to protecting the interests of farmers, fisheries, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), India refused to yield, prioritising its economic sovereignty. "This principled stance, as noted by economists Stuart and Linda Stern in their 2023 book India's Economic Ascendancy: Navigating Global Trade Challenges, has not only safeguarded India's core sectors but positioned it to emerge stronger from the ongoing tariff chaos," Sinha wrote. A SBI Research report last week said that imposition of a 25 per cent penalty on goods trade with India, with a proposition of an additional 25 per cent on the world's largest democracy, can be a bad policy decision for the US and its people. India - strategically protecting its sovereignty - must continue to protect its farmers from likelihood of predatory practices of select global conglomerates who may vie for a lucrative "Desi" pie without investing in sustainable market infrastructure creation, anchoring agri value chain financing and being a partner in welfare schemes that upend 'Ease of Living' for our farming community, the report stressed. According to Sinha, this tariff crisis presents India with a strategic opportunity to accelerate its pursuit of technological autonomy and expand its global market reach. "The Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative, another visionary policy spearheaded by PM Modi, has driven investments in indigenous technologies, particularly in critical areas like semiconductors, 5G infrastructure, and renewable energy," he emphasised. The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has attracted global tech giants like Apple, Samsung, and Foxconn, boosting electronics exports by 22 per cent in 2024, according to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The tariff crisis has also reshaped the geopolitical landscape, creating opportunities for India to assert its global influence. "By standing firm against coercive trade tactics, India has bolstered its reputation as a principled and independent power. This stance has opened the door to fresh alignments, particularly within the Russia-India-China (RIC) framework," said Sinha. Prime Minister Modi's proposed visit to Beijing for the 2025 SCO Summit and his recent call with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva signal India's intent to deepen ties with BRICS partners. "These diplomatic engagements, as noted by the Ministry of External Affairs (2025), reflect India's strategic balancing act, leveraging the tariff dispute to enhance its geopolitical leverage. The potential revival of RIC cooperation, alongside strengthened BRICS collaboration, positions India as a pivotal player in a multipolar world. By fostering these partnerships, India is not only countering US pressure but also shaping a new global order that prioritises mutual cooperation over unilateral demands," Sinha highlighted.

PM Modi to inaugurate newly-constructed flats for MPs in New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate 184 newly constructed Type-VII multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament at Baba Kharak Singh Marg here on Monday (August 11, 2025). On this occasion, the Prime Minister will plant a Sindoor sapling at the residential premise. He will also interact with 'sramajeevis' on this occasion and address the gathering, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The flats will be inaugurated at around 10 A.M. on August 11, the statement said. The complex is designed to be self-sufficient and is equipped with a full range of modern amenities to address the functional needs of the members of the Parliament, it said. "Incorporating green technology, the project adheres to the standards of the GRIHA 3-star rating and complies with the National Building Code (NBC) 2016. These environmentally sustainable features are expected to contribute to energy conservation, renewable energy generation, and effective waste management," the statement said. The use of advanced construction technology — specifically, monolithic concrete with aluminum shuttering — enabled timely completion of the project while ensuring structural durability. The complex is also 'divyang'-friendly, demonstrating a commitment to inclusive design, the statement said. The development of the project was necessitated due to shortage of adequate housing for Members of Parliament, it said. Owing to the limited availability of land, there has been a sustained emphasis on vertical housing developments aimed at optimising land use and minimising maintenance costs. Each residential unit offers approximately 5,000 square feet of carpet area, providing ample space for both residential and official functions, the statement said. The inclusion of dedicated areas for offices, staff accommodation, and a community centre will support members of Parliament in fulfilling their responsibilities as public representatives, it said. All buildings within the complex are constructed to be earthquake-resistant, in accordance with modern structural design norms. A comprehensive and robust security system has been implemented to ensure the safety of all residents, the statement said.
