Govt suspends Sambhajinagar additional tehsildar on the run since ACB trap

Time of India13 hours ago

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: State govt has suspended Nitin Garje, an additional tehsildar from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, who remains at large after the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) filed a bribery case against him.
Two men, who allegedly collected bribes on Garje's behalf, have been nabbed.
Authorities issued the suspension order on Friday, under rule 4(1)(a) of the Maharashtra Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1979, following grave corruption allegations. Garje allegedly sought ₹3 lakh through intermediaries to process five land correction files that had been pending in his office since Dec 2024.
The ACB initiated action on May 15 after receiving a complaint from a 50-year-old man regarding his son's plot at Mitmita under area correction proceedings.
The complainant said during an April hearing, people connected to Garje demanded Rs 60,000 per file for favourable outcomes in five cases. The complainant then contacted the ACB.
After verification on May 13 and 14, investigators discovered that Garje had instructed his associate Nitin Chavan to collect the bribe. On May 15, ACB personnel set up a trap at the tehsildar's office, where Sohail Bahashwan was caught accepting Rs 60,000 from the complainant.

ACB arrested both Chavan and Bahashwan, seizing Rs 60,000 and several mobile phones. Garje, upon learning about the operation, fled and remains untraceable.
After a lower court rejected his anticipatory bail application, Garje has approached the high court, where his petition awaits consideration.
The Friday suspension order states that Garje's actions tarnished the revenue department's reputation and violated Rule 3 of the Maharashtra Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1979. During the pending departmental inquiry, he must remain at the district collector's office headquarters and obtain permission before leaving. While suspended, he will receive a subsistence allowance but must declare non-engagement in private employment or business.
The investigation continues under sections 7A and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

'Might be dead soon': Minnesota killer's last text to friend; police probe shooter's motive

(AP photo) Police are searching for 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, the main suspect in a deadly shooting that killed Minnesota state lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, and injured State Senator John Hoffman and his wife. The shooting has shocked the community, and a manhunt is now under way. According to police, Boelter was last seen Saturday wearing a light-coloured cowboy hat, a dark long-sleeved shirt or coat, and carrying a dark bag. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for help leading to his arrest. 'Might be dead soon': Boelter's last text to friend Carlson David Carlson, 59, who shared a house with Boelter in Minneapolis, said he last saw him Friday night. Then early Saturday morning, he got a troubling text from Boelter. "He said that he might be dead soon," Carlson told Reuters. He then called the police. Carlson, who has known Boelter since fourth grade, said Boelter worked at an eye donation center and stayed at the house because it was near his job. "His family has got to suffer through this," Carlson added, saying he feels betrayed by Boelter and heartbroken for the victims. Links to ministries and security work Boelter had a complex background. State records show he was appointed in 2016 to the Governor's Workforce Development Board, which helps advise the governor on Minnesota's workforce system. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She Found THIS Chat on Her Husband's Phone and Vanished Overnight medalmerit Learn More Undo He also claimed to be a Christian minister and security expert with experience in places like the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe. He and his wife ran a security business called Praetorian Guard Security Services LLC, which offered armed guard services. He also said he led an organization called the Red Lion Group in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These claims, however, have not yet been confirmed. Boelter was also linked to a Christian nonprofit ministry called Revoformation. He said he became a minister in 1993 and grew up in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. On the Revoformation website, Boelter claimed he travelled to dangerous areas in Gaza and the West Bank to talk to militants about peace and religion. "He sought out militant Islamists in order to share the gospel and tell them that violence wasn't the answer," the biography on the website said. Boelter and politics Boelter didn't list a political party preference. On LinkedIn six years ago, he encouraged Americans to vote and respect the process. "If you believe in prayer, please keep the United States in your prayers," he wrote. Carlson said Boelter voted for Donald Trump and was a Christian who didn't like abortion. But he also said, "He wasn't really angry about politics." Authorities are still trying to find out if Boelter personally knew the lawmakers. "We are still exploring that," said Drew Evans, head of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. "There's certainly some overlap with some public meetings, I will say, with Senator Hoffman and the individual. But we don't know the nature of the relationship or if they actually knew each other." 'Manifesto' found in car After the suspect shot at police on Saturday, he ran off and left behind a vehicle. Inside, officers found a "manifesto" and a list of other lawmakers and officials. Investigators are still reading through the writings to understand why Boelter may have done this. "It would be premature for me at this point to really say exactly what the motivation might be from these writings," Evans said. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz believes the attack was not random. "It appears to be a politically motivated assassination," he said.

‘We just want them home': Punjab families await return of their sons amid escalating Israel-Iran tensions

Amid an open conflict between Israel and Iran, a wave of fresh anxiety has swept through three villages in Punjab. The families of Husanpreet Singh (27), Amritpal Singh (23), and Jaspal Singh (32)— who were kidnapped in Iran while attempting to migrate to Australia — are clinging to hope, even as fears grow over their safe return from a region now gripped by military chaos. Even as the families said that they trust the Indian government, which has assured them of the men's safe return, their fears have intensified with Iran now embroiled in a full-blown tension. The three men, who hail from Sangrur, Hoshiarpur, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh (SBS) Nagar, were missing for weeks after falling victim to a transnational human trafficking ring. Having paid Rs 18 lakh each to travel agents based in Hoshiarpur who had promised a legal entry to Australia, their journey was derailed in Tehran, where they were kidnapped, beaten, and held for ransom. Manpreet Singh, cousin of 27-year-old Husanpreet Singh from Dhuri who received a phone call from an Iranian number on June 3, said, 'Can't explain in words, it was such a big relief when he first called saying he is safe now. He said that the Indian authorities have rescued them and they were now being taken to the embassy.' He started calling us daily after that saying that the formalities for their return were being completed. And now, with news of fresh tension, we are very worried.' Yudhvir Singh, cousin of 23-year-old Amritpal Singh said, 'We waited through silence, torture videos, and ransom threats. Now we wait through the Israel-Iran tension. They told us then that they are now safe,' he added. Ashok Kumar, brother of Jaspal Singh from SBS Nagar, added that Jaspal had told him last week that it would take at least a week for them to return. 'But now this conflict has added a new layer. We saw the news about how Israeli forces struck multiple Iranian facilities, and how Iran has responded with attacks on Israel,' he said. He added, 'Jaspal told us that due to their prolonged stay in Tehran after the kidnapping, new travel documents are being prepared. This process has caused delays; otherwise, they would have returned by now, as they were rescued by Iranian police on the evening of June 3. It has now been 10 days since their rescue.' What began in April as a dream migration quickly turned into a nightmare. After being flown to Dubai, the three were taken to Iran under a false promise of onward flights to Australia. There they were stripped, and tortured by captors allegedly linked to a Pakistan-based human trafficking syndicate.
