England star decides 'preferred option' amid Liverpool and Newcastle interest

Marc Guehi has reportedly picked out Liverpool as his favoured option should he depart Selhurst Park, but Crystal Palace are still yet to receive any formal offers for the defender this summer. The 25-year-old has established himself as one of the most highly regarded and sought-after centre-backs in Premier League football since leaving boyhood team Chelsea for Palace back in 2021. A string of assured performances at Euro 2024 only enhanced Guehi's reputation and the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle and Liverpool all expressed an interest in signing the England international following last summer's tournament. Newcastle, in particular, pushed hard to get a deal over the line right up until the deadline, but saw several bids rejected for Guehi, who was subsequently named Palace's club captain ahead of the 2024/25 season. However, Guehi's future has once again been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks and the Magpies remain in the hunt for the Chelsea academy product, with Eddie Howe keen for defensive reinforcements at St James' Park. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. According The Guardian's Ed Aarons, Guehi would be 'happy' to stay put at Palace to see out remainder of his contract, which is due to expire in June 2026. But Liverpool are said to be Guehi's 'preferred option' and the centre-half would jump at the chance to join the Premier League champions should the opportunity arise. While Palace have not yet been tempted with any bids for Guehi, the club could be prepared to do business should they receive an offer in the region of £40million. Guehi has made 155 appearances in all competitions across his four years at Selhurst Park and last season wrote himself into Palace history as he captained the club to FA Cup glory at Wembley. Prior to Palace's famous victory over Manchester City, Guehi refused to provide any assurances over his future with the Eagles. 'I think the most important thing is just always doing the best that I can for this football club. I come in every day and I try to be the same,' he said. 'I try to work hard. And you know, this football club has given me a lot. I'm still under contract at this football club, so my focus is always at this football club. 'So, you know, for me, the most important is just doing the best I can and seeing where the future holds.' Speaking to talkSPORT in June, Jermaine Pennant tipped Guehi to replace Ibrahima Konate at Anfield, with the latter rumoured to be attracting strong interest from Real Madrid. 'If Liverpool are in for Marc Guehi, that signals to me that Konate is more on the side of leaving,' the former Liverpool winger said. 'I'm thinking, is this a situation like Real Madrid and Trent Alexander-Arnold, where Liverpool are saying to Guehi, 'Just see your contract out and we will look after you'? 'Because Konate is in the same situation, he's in the last year of his contract and they haven't agreed a deal. 'So Liverpool might be saying to him, 'Look, Konate's going to go at the end of this season, Marc Guehi, you see out your contract and come, join us for a free and we're prepared to offer you this'. 'I could see that happening.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Alexander Isak's dream Liverpool transfer in limbo as Man Utd plan Benjamin Sesko swap deal

Manchester United matched Newcastle's £74m bid for RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko - and Rasmus Hojlund could head the other way in bad news for Alexander Isak and Liverpool Alexander Isak was in limbo on Tuesday night - with the wantaway Newcastle striker fearing that Benjamin Sesko could scupper his dream move to Liverpool. ‌ With Manchester United matching the Magpies' £74m bid for RB Leipzig hitman Sesko, the Slovenian now has to decide which club he will join ‌ But if he chooses United ahead of Newcastle, then Isak could find himself in no-man's land with the new season just 10 days away. And that scenario is looking increasingly likely with the Bundesliga side keen on taking United misfit Rasmus Hojlund in the deal. ‌ Toon officials have made it clear to the Swede that they will only sell him if Liverpool match their valuation AND they have a replacement lined up. Liverpool have so far lodged an initial bid of £110m plus add-ons, well short of the Toon's valuation. And they won't be back in until Newcastle have brought in a replacement for their prize asset. For their part, Newcastle want the situation resolved as quickly as possible. They had hoped that United's delay in bidding for Sesko would leave them firmly in the driving seat but now both clubs had made similar offers to Leipzig leaving the final decision firmly in Sesko's court. The player trained indoors away from his team-mates, with his departure imminent. Various sources in Germany claim he favours a move to Old Trafford despite a lack of European football next season. Newcastle, however, won't give up knowing they can't fail to land yet another of their top transfer targets having already missed out on Bryan Mbeumo, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Dean Huijsen. ‌ And while no-one inside the club will admit it, they would rather have Sesko leading their attack than a disgruntled Isak, who would rather be wearing the red shirt of Liverpool. The Magpies remain confident of signing forward Yoane Wissa despite their two offers so far falling well short of the price tag Brentford have slapped on him. And they have stepped up their bid to land AC Milan's 23-year-old centre half Malick Thiaw.

David de Gea sends Man Utd message as goalkeeper prepares for Old Trafford return

Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea spent more than a decade with Manchester United but left the club in 2023 when Erik ten Hag was in charge at the Premier League club Manchester United will welcome goalkeeper David de Gea back to Old Trafford this weekend, two years after he left the club. And the Spaniard has sent a message to fans aead of his return. ‌ The former Atletico Madrid star saw his contract expire in 2023, joining Fiorentina a full year later. The Viola are due in Manchester on Saturday for what will be United's final warm-up game ahead of the new season - a year to the day after De Gea moved to Tuscany. ‌ "United Road. See you Saturday," De Gea wrote on social media. The keeper's comments were met with positivity from United supporters, some of whom even suggested he'd be preferable to the English side's current options in the home goal. ‌ "Right after the game, we won't let you out of Old Trafford. Fiorentina can go with [Andre] Onana," one supporter wrote under De Gea's message. "Welcome home Dave," wrote a second, with a third saying: "We miss you". "Will be great seeing you play again. Terrible how our club treat you," was the verdict from a fourth. De Gea's former club are looking to round off an unbeaten pre-season campaign by getting the better of Fiorentina. After a goalless draw with Leeds in Stockholm, Ruben Amorim's team claimed two wins and a draw in the Premier League Summer Series in the United States. There was room for improvement in the last of those games, a 2-2 draw with Everton, which prompted captain Bruno Fernandes to ask questions. Ruben Amorim's side will now hope to go out with a bang before beginning their Premier League campaign against Arsenal on August 17. United could find themselves without first-choice keeper Onana for the weekend friendly. The Cameroon international has been working his way back from injury and is optimistic about returning for the league opener, but the Fiorentina match-up may still come too early. "l'm good, I feel great," Onana told NBC during United's spell in the US. "It's been a few difficult weeks but yeah, hopefully, I will be back for the start of the season. I'm enjoying the training with my guys and we are looking forward." Reflecting on the tour, he added: "We're happy with the way things are going. We play well, score goals and I'm happy how the team is developing themselves. Let's see. I think it's going to be important to have a good start against Arsenal and then everything is possible."
