David de Gea sends Man Utd message as goalkeeper prepares for Old Trafford return
Manchester United will welcome goalkeeper David de Gea back to Old Trafford this weekend, two years after he left the club. And the Spaniard has sent a message to fans aead of his return.
The former Atletico Madrid star saw his contract expire in 2023, joining Fiorentina a full year later. The Viola are due in Manchester on Saturday for what will be United's final warm-up game ahead of the new season - a year to the day after De Gea moved to Tuscany.
"United Road. See you Saturday," De Gea wrote on social media. The keeper's comments were met with positivity from United supporters, some of whom even suggested he'd be preferable to the English side's current options in the home goal.
"Right after the game, we won't let you out of Old Trafford. Fiorentina can go with [Andre] Onana," one supporter wrote under De Gea's message.
"Welcome home Dave," wrote a second, with a third saying: "We miss you". "Will be great seeing you play again. Terrible how our club treat you," was the verdict from a fourth.
De Gea's former club are looking to round off an unbeaten pre-season campaign by getting the better of Fiorentina. After a goalless draw with Leeds in Stockholm, Ruben Amorim's team claimed two wins and a draw in the Premier League Summer Series in the United States.
There was room for improvement in the last of those games, a 2-2 draw with Everton, which prompted captain Bruno Fernandes to ask questions. Ruben Amorim's side will now hope to go out with a bang before beginning their Premier League campaign against Arsenal on August 17.
United could find themselves without first-choice keeper Onana for the weekend friendly. The Cameroon international has been working his way back from injury and is optimistic about returning for the league opener, but the Fiorentina match-up may still come too early.
"l'm good, I feel great," Onana told NBC during United's spell in the US. "It's been a few difficult weeks but yeah, hopefully, I will be back for the start of the season. I'm enjoying the training with my guys and we are looking forward."
Reflecting on the tour, he added: "We're happy with the way things are going. We play well, score goals and I'm happy how the team is developing themselves. Let's see. I think it's going to be important to have a good start against Arsenal and then everything is possible."

However the striker has expressed a desire to head to Old Trafford, shunning Champions League football in the process, as Amorim closes on the No 9 he's been after.
