
India's biofuel drive pecks at chicken farmer profits

In Ghazipur, a small town tucked along the Ganges river in north India, farmer Satyadev Prajapati is counting fewer eggs hatched by his 350 free-range hens as the price of their feed soars by 40%. India's fast-expanding biofuel programme, meant to cut oil imports and their emissions, has ratcheted up competition for maize, and small poultry producers like Prajapati are bearing the brunt. "If maize prices go up, but the price of eggs doesn't, it hits us directly," he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone. The Indian government wants every litre of petrol sold across the country to be a mix of 20% ethanol fuel by the end of 2025. Maize, alongside sugarcane, is a key feedstock in the biofuel. But the increase in ethanol production is diverting the food crop from traditional uses like livestock feed — impacting millions of small poultry farmers who rely on maize to raise their birds.
For a country seeking energy security and lower emissions, blending ethanol fuel made with petrol before it reaches consumers saved India about 1.06 trillion rupees ($12.37 billion) in crude oil import costs between 2014 and 2024, according to Indian government data.
It also helped avoid 54.4 million metric tonnes of planet-heating carbon dioxide emissions in the same decade, government data showed. This is roughly the equivalent of about 12 million gasoline-powered cars a year, according to a calculator from the US Environmental Protection Agency. Maize-based ethanol production has risen from 1 million metric tonnes in 2022 to more than 6 million metric tonnes in 2024 and is expected to jump to about 11 metric tonnes by the end of 2025, according to maize feed industry estimates shared with the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Ethanol production now uses about a third of the total maize grown in India, putting it in a direct competition with the poultry sector, which consumes about 60% of India's maize, the document showed.
Rajeev Ranjan, a maize supplier to both ethanol plants and poultry feed mills, said prices have risen more than 20% in the past year. "Any fluctuation in maize availability or cost directly affects poultry feed prices," said Suresh Deora, former chairman of the Compound Livestock Feed Manufacturers' Association of India.
With egg prices set by market demand, small farmers cannot easily pass on rising costs. Once a net maize exporter, India is now being forced to import the grain to stabilise domestic supply, Reuters reported.
India's current demand for maize, including for fuel and industrial uses, already exceeds production, said Ramya Natarajan, a research scientist at the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP), an Indian think tank.
Meeting the 20% ethanol target will require diverting land roughly seven times the size of New York City to grow enough biofuel crops, according to an analysis from CSTEP. Prajapati said spiralling costs and lower egg production have led him to resort to cheaper, lower quality feed, which further hurts the number of eggs his chickens lay. He and other small poultry farmers are already dealing with diseases, a lack of access to credit and heatwaves that reduce egg yields and increase bird mortality. In the neighbouring district of Varanasi, Prince Rajput, a feed and chick supplier, said maize price hikes have shrunk his margins too.
He warned that small farmers have little room to cushion these shocks, and rising costs may squeeze them out entirely. Unlike large producers, they cannot hedge against inflation or negotiate supply deals. "Poultry doesn't seem to be a priority sector for the government," Rajput said. "Even getting loans is difficult."
For now, farmers and feed manufacturers are urging the government to increase maize cultivation and restrict its use in ethanol.
Government departments responsible for poultry, maize and biofuel production did not respond to requests for comment.
Experts say one potential solution could be new biofuel technologies.
While the vast majority of biofuels are made from food crops like maize, second-generation, or 2G, ethanol uses crop residues and non-food biomass, which could reduce the strain on food systems.
If 2G ethanol becomes commercially viable, it could help India meet its blending targets without compromising food security or land-use change, Natarajan said. She added that the government could encourage the shift by limiting the land and water footprint of ethanol production and offering a clearer definition of what counts as "sustainable ethanol."

LAUNCESTON, Australia - Asia's imports of crude oil rose in the first half of 2025 as a surge in June arrivals overcame a soft start in the early months of the year. The world's top-importing region saw arrivals of 27.36 million barrels per day (bpd) in the first half of this year, up 620,000 bpd from the 26.74 million bpd for the same period last year, according to data compiled by LSEG Oil Research. The stronger performance was mainly because June imports surged to 28.65 million bpd, the highest in LSEG data since January 2023 and up from 27.3 million bpd in May and 26.42 million bpd in June last year. The strength in June imports was led by China, the world's top importer, with LSEG estimating arrivals at 11.96 million bpd, the most since the 12.11 million bpd recorded in March. India, Asia's second-biggest buyer, is on track for June imports of 5.26 million bpd, which will be the highest since the 5.35 million bpd in March. The question for the market is whether the strength seen in Asia's June imports is the harbinger of stronger demand in the second half, or whether it was driven by temporary factors. The most obvious of the temporary factors is price, with both China and India known to be sensitive to price movements, increasing imports when they are low but cutting back when they rise. June-arriving cargoes would have been arranged six to eight weeks before delivery, meaning that they were secured at a time when oil prices were in a downtrend. Global benchmark Brent futures went from a high of $75.47 a barrel on April 2 to a four-year low of $58.40 on April 9, then traded sideways before another low of $58.50 on May 5. Since the low on May 5 Brent has been trending higher, reaching $70.40 a barrel on June 12, the day before Israel launched its bombing campaign against Iran. The Israeli attacks and the subsequent U.S. bombings saw crude spike to a five-month high of $81.40 a barrel on June 23, before the risk premium evaporated with a ceasefire deal announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. AUGUST IMPACT? The increasing prices will be felt by Asia's refiners mainly for cargoes arriving in late July and in August, so it will be key to monitor whether there is any pullback in imports in that time period. Certainly there is little to suggest that demand for crude and refined products is growing strongly in Asia. China's refinery processing rose only 0.3% in the first five months of the year to 14.47 million bpd, according to the latest available official data. The tiny gain in refinery throughput suggests that demand growth for refined products in China is sluggish and that the additional crude being imported is largely being added to inventories. India's fuel demand is also flat, with data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell of the oil ministry showing consumption of refined products at 4.51 million bpd for the first five months of 2025, from 4.52 million bpd for the same period in 2024, based on Reuters calculations from monthly tonnages. The increase in oil prices in recent weeks, and the shock of the spike during the Israeli and U.S. attacks on Iran, are likely to weaken Asia's demand for crude imports from August onwards. Will analysts break their 10-year streak on US soybean acres? -Braun

NAPERVILLE, Illinois - The U.S. Department of Agriculture next Monday will publish one of its most important surveys of the year, which also happens to be among the more difficult to forecast. But amid all the noise the June acreage report can create, there has been one constant for ten years running: the trade overestimating soybean acres. New-crop Chicago soybean futures last Friday were less than 2 cents per bushel away from inking new yearly highs, though they have since tumbled 5%. Meanwhile, December corn futures notched contract lows on Wednesday, settling 12% off their February high. To boot, the next few weeks are a seasonally heavy period for U.S. corn futures and Corn Belt weather forecasts are looking decent for now. This means that a much larger-than-usual report shock may be needed on Monday for the corn or bean market to consider a change of course. That's not the most likely outcome, but history suggests it's not impossible. TRACK RECORD The upcoming numbers are not easy to predict. U.S. corn and soybean plantings have landed outside the pre-report range of estimates in four of the last six Junes, though not necessarily in the same years. Soybean acres have come in below the average trade estimate for the last 10 Junes, while corn acres landed above it in seven of the last 10 years, including the latest four. On average, analysts expect U.S. corn plantings at 95.35 million acres in Monday's report, up very slightly from the March figure of 95.326 million. Ten of the 24 estimates pegged corn acres declining from the March survey, interesting given that whisper numbers back in the spring exceeded 96 million acres. The average trade guess reflects the typical lean as June corn acres have been higher than in March in 15 of the last 20 years. The latest two instances where June acres were lower happened in 2019 and 2020, featuring one of the wettest Midwestern springs and then the pandemic. The trend on whether soybean acres rise or fall from March to June is perfectly split over the last two decades. But recently, the bias is for June soybean acres to be smaller than the March ones, having occurred in five of the last six years (not 2020). That makes this year's expectations interesting as analysts peg soybean acres at 83.655 million acres, up slightly from 83.495 million in March. Fourteen of the 24 analysts voted for a larger June bean acreage versus March. The sentiment shift away from corn and toward beans since March likely comes as super wet conditions in eastern areas delayed corn planting, potentially favoring soybeans. But nationally, corn planting was average to faster than average for the entire spring. However, it should be noted that while corn profitability had been significantly better than that of soybeans since last fall, corn prices by themselves were not exactly attractive. This could keep a lid on any corn acreage gains on Monday.
