Sidhu Attacks Gambhir's Critics After IND Vs ENG: 'Will You Stand Up And...'
Navjot Singh Sidhu praised coach Gautam Gambhir for his steadfastness during India's tough England tour, leading to a 2-2 draw. Sidhu urged critics to recognise Gambhir's success.
Former India opener Navjot Singh Sidhu on Wednesday praised current head coach Gautam Gambhir for his steadfastness during the challenging England tour and questioned his critics if they would now acknowledge him for the 2-2 draw in the UK.
India, who embarked on the tour shortly after the retirements of Test stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, played remarkable cricket across five fiercely contested Test matches to secure a commendable draw against England on their home turf.
Reflecting on the result, achieved through a splendid victory in the series decider at the Oval, Sidhu noted that Gambhir also deserves recognition for the team's success.
'We do a lot of hero-worshipping. I want to say that whenever India plays even a little badly, anyone and everyone climbs on Gautam Gambhir and blames him. Will you stand up and greet him today?" Sidhu qas quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.
Sidhu suggested that trying out wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav might have been beneficial but credited Gambhir for persisting with his approach despite criticism and for giving opportunities to younger players.
'It was Gautam Gambhir who insisted on this transition, who gave opportunities to guys like Akash Deep and Washington. Yes, Kuldeep was maybe a better option. But he had conviction. There will be scope for improvement today and tomorrow as well. But for someone who has been questioned and criticised so much, today give him the due that he deserves."
Sidhu added: 'There were many unknowns when the team went who had not made their name. Gambhir had told three to four big names are missing from the team but think of it as an opportunity for others to establish themselves.
'His words have proven to be true. Be it Brisbane, Perth, or England, history has been scripted by youngsters and it is a big thing."
Gambhir entered the England series under pressure following an unprecedented Test series whitewash at home to New Zealand and setbacks in Australia.
Sidhu recalled how Gambhir had encouraged the youngsters before the tour to see it as a major opportunity to make a mark.

MS Dhoni breaks silence on CSK future for the first time since IPL 2025, receives applause: 'It's not about one year...'
After staying silent on his Chennai Super Kings (CSK) future for long, MS Dhoni has finally spoken out, dropping a fresh remark on what lies ahead for him with the IPL franchise. Speaking at a private event in Chennai on Saturday, the legendary former captain reaffirmed his commitment to CSK beyond his playing years, describing his bond with the franchise as one for the ages. MS Dhoni spoke about his CSK future(PTI) 'Me and CSK, we are together. You know even for the next 15-20 years (crowd cheers). I hope they don't think I'll be playing for another 15-20 years! But yeah,' Dhoni said with a smile, suggesting his involvement with CSK will continue in some form long after he hangs up his boots. There were speculations that the 44-year-old would step aside after IPL 2024, but Dhoni made an excellent recovery from his knee issue and even took charge of captaincy midway through IPL 2025 after Ruturaj Gaikwad pulled out due to an elbow injury. Dhoni led CSK through a challenging campaign that saw the five-time champions finish bottom of the table, managing only four wins in 14 matches. 'It's not about one year or two years. I will always be sitting in a yellow jersey. You know whether I'll be playing or not in a while, but yeah, you know yourself,' he added, teasing fans who have long speculated about his final season. Just last week, during a separate event, Dhoni had sidestepped a direct question on his playing future. However, he did not hold back on Saturday while reflecting on CSK's disappointing season and what lies ahead. 'Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also,' he said. Gaikwad will be back The former India captain had previously admitted that CSK's batting issues were a concern during the 2025 season but expressed confidence that the return of Ruturaj Gaikwad would help address the imbalance. 'Rutu will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now,' Dhoni said, also pointing to the upcoming December mini-auction as a window to plug remaining gaps. In a heartfelt closing, Dhoni once again credited CSK and the city of Chennai for shaping his career: 'So, I feel the relationship over the years has grown. It helped me improve as a person. It helped me improve as a cricketer. CSK just happened. I think it's good for Chennai. So, today it's good for me also.'

Like Bumrah, Siraj's workload needs care to avoid injury: RP Singh
Mohammed Siraj is in the same league as premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah and it is important to manage his workload carefully to keep him injury-free, said former Indian fast bowler RP Singh. Siraj bowled 185.3 overs in the recently-concluded five-match Test series in England and finished as the highest wicket-taker with 23 wickets, emerging as the most utilised bowler in the series. The 31-year-old from Hyderabad claimed nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings of the fifth Test, playing a key role in India's six-run victory that helped the visitors level the series 2-2. Workload management will be crucial to prevent Siraj from getting injured in the future," Singh said in an interview with PTI-Bhasha. "Fast bowlers are at higher risk of injury when they play too many matches in a short time. His workload should be managed just like we did with Bumrah." Citing Jasprit Bumrah's example, Singh said: "It's because of better workload management, Bumrah bowled brilliantly in both ODI and T20 World Cups. "Siraj is also in the same league. To protect him from injuries, we need to seriously focus on his workload, sooner or later." Singh, who played 82 matches for India including 14 Tests, praised Siraj for his lion-hearted performance during the England tour. Siraj was the only bowler who played all five Tests and bowled with full energy and intensity in each match," said Singh, a JioHotstar' Cricket expert. "The last ball of the series, which bowled out the batsman, was one of his top five fastest deliveries in the series. Siraj delivered a 143 kmph yorker to clean up Gus Atkinson and seal India's win in the fifth Test. It was the fifth-fastest ball he bowled in the series. "This shows that he never lacked effort. He focused on bowling with the right line and length and contributed beyond expectations for the team. His fitness and rhythm were excellent throughout, Singh said. Having bowled largely under Bumrah's leadership until now, Siraj carved his own identity during the England series. Singh noted that even Bumrah's success has been supported by Siraj. "Just like batsmen need partnerships, bowlers also prefer bowling in pairs. Bumrah tends to take more wickets and his unique action troubles batters more," the former left-arm bowler said. "Siraj's role is to build pressure from his end, and he does that very well. Their partnership has been special and delivered great performances. When Bumrah is not in the team, Siraj automatically becomes our lead fast bowler." On the debate over Bumrah featuring in only three matches on the England tour due to workload management, Singh said: "That was already planned. The good thing about Bumrah is that whenever he's in the team, he gives you wickets. "Captains always expect breakthroughs from him. He usually bowls more than others in any match he plays." Singh also praised skipper Shubman Gill, who led from the front with 754 runs in the series. No one thought India would come back and level the series 2-2. Gill was impressive as captain. He made good decisions and his personal performance was outstanding. "When a captain performs well in his role, it positively influences his decision-making." The series also saw moments of grit as injured players had to bat to save matches. Rishabh Pant came out to bat in Manchester despite a fractured leg, while England's Chris Woakes batted with his left arm in a sling after suffering a shoulder fracture. Singh said in such situations, teams should be allowed like-for-like injury replacements. In my opinion, there should be a neutral doctor or physio during every match who decides the severity of a player's injury and whether the player is fit to play. If not, the team should be allowed to bring in a replacement of similar ability, he said. Kuldeep Yadav and Arshdeep Singh did not feature in any of the Tests, and Singh attributed this to the team management's preference for all-rounders. There's no doubt that every player wants to be in the playing XI. From the first match of the series, India decided to strengthen the batting. To deepen the batting lineup, the team preferred all-rounders. That's why Kuldeep didn't get to play," he said. If the team had prioritized bowling strength, then Kuldeep would have played. Washington Sundar partially filled the spin bowler role. But I believe there were two or three pitches where Kuldeep could have been very effective. But these things happen in cricket, if not today, then there will be opportunities in the future.
