A team of six UAEU students will study harmonic motion and damping in microgravity, aiming to better understand physical behavior in space versus Earth.
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has announced that a team from the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) will represent the UAE in the final phase of the Asian Try Zero-G 2025 competition, organised in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and other space agencies and entities.
The competition offers university students from across the Asia-Pacific region to propose physics experiments to be conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS), with the final experiments performed by a Japanese astronaut inside the Japanese Experiment Module “Kibo”. 11 teams from nine countries have qualified for the final phase of the competition, which is set to be to be carried out sometime in the second half of 2025 to beginning of 2026.
In this year’s edition, MBRSC received 17 experiment proposals from 74 students representing 8 universities across the UAE. Following a rigorous internal review, three teams were nominated by the Centre, with UAEU’s proposal successfully advancing to the final phase.
The selected experiment, developed by a team of six UAEU students, focuses on investigating harmonic motion and damping effects in microgravity, which could provide deeper insights into physical behaviour in space compared to Earth’s gravitational environment.
MBRSC’s support for student participation in the Asian Try Zero-G initiative is part of its wider commitment to science education, public engagement, and collaboration with academic institutions across the country. Through such initiatives, the Centre aims to offer young talents meaningful opportunities to contribute to real-world research and gain hands-on experience in space science.

Japan firm seeks approval for stem cell treatment for Parkinson's

TOKYO (AFP) Japanese drugmaker Sumitomo Pharma said Tuesday it is seeking approval for a Parkinson's disease treatment that transplants stem cells into a patient's brain, following a successful clinical trial. The company applied to Japanese regulators for manufacturing and marketing authorisation aimed at the treatment of patients with avanced Parkinson's disease, it said in a statement. A trial led by Kyoto University researchers indicated that the company's treatment using induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) cells -- which have the potential to develop into any cell in the body -- was safe and successful in improving symptoms. The study involved seven Parkinson's patients aged between 50 and 69, with each receiving a total of either five million or 10 million cells implanted on both sides of the brain. The iPS cells from healthy donors were developed into the precursors of dopamine-producing brain cells, which are no longer present in people with Parkinson's disease. The patients were monitored for two years and no major adverse effects were found, the study said. Four patients showed improvements in symptoms, it said. The trial results were published in Nature in April. Sumitomo Pharma is also carrying out a clinical trial in the United States. Parkinson's disease is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects the body's motor system, often causing shaking and other difficulties in movement. Worldwide, about 10 million people have the illness, according to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. Currently available therapies "improve symptoms without slowing or halting the disease progression," the foundation says. iPS cells are created by stimulating mature, already specialised, cells back into a juvenile state -- basically cloning without the need for an embryo. The cells can be transformed into a range of different types of cells, and their use is a key sector of medical research.

During their mission, Crew-11 will conduct scientific research to prepare for human exploration beyond low Earth orbit and benefit humanity on Earth. Four astronauts launched into orbit aboard NASA’s SpaceX Crew-11 mission, beginning a new chapter of scientific exploration aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Lift-off took place from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, with a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket propelling the Dragon spacecraft into space. The crew includes NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, JAXA astronaut Kimiya Yui and Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Platonov. Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy said: 'Thanks to the bold leadership of President Donald J. Trump, NASA is back! The agency’s SpaceX Crew-11 mission to the space station is the first step toward our permanent presence on the Moon. NASA, in conjunction with great American companies, continues the mission with Artemis in 2026. NASA’s SpaceX Crew-10 will depart the station following a brief handover period, pending favorable weather conditions at splashdown sites off the California coast. Throughout their mission, Crew-11 will carry out a range of scientific experiments aimed at advancing human spaceflight and benefiting life on Earth. Research will include simulations of lunar landings, studies on protecting astronaut vision, plant cell division, bacterial virus behavior in microgravity, and new methods for producing stem cells and generating nutrients on-demand. The mission, part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Programme, exemplifies the agency’s ongoing collaboration with private industry to maintain reliable access to the ISS while laying the groundwork for future exploration beyond low Earth orbit.
