HCA Florida Healthcare to bring stand-alone ER to Nassau County
HCA Florida Memorial Hospital has announced the ribbon cutting of its first freestanding emergency room in Nassau County.

Located at the corner of I-95 ad State Road 200, the ribbon cutting will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, March 31.
'The goal of the new space is to provide better access for patients needing emergency care to the Nassau County region,' said Reed Hammond, Chief Executive Officer of HCA Florida Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. 'As a part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the largest healthcare family in Florida, Nassau County is now connected to a wide spectrum of statewide healthcare resources previously not available.'
HCA Florida Yulee Emergency will serve Yulee, Callahan, Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, nearby South Georgia, and Jacksonville residents. Services provided include:

Ultrasound
X-ray
Board-certified emergency physicians

Landscape supervisor turned hero: Man helps over 2 dozen people, pets escape apartment fire
They say not all heroes wear capes, and that is exactly the case with Cornelius Rainey. The people he helped save from a burning apartment complex in Hyde Park on Wednesday night agree. The Landscape supervisor was visiting his family at Riverbank Apartments on Wednesday, June 4, when he quickly realized something was wrong. 'I looked to the left and see fire, flames shooting out the building,' said Rainey. 'That's when I went and helped everyone out of their apartment.' >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< Around 4:45 pm Wednesday, JFRD responded to a fire at Riverbank apartments in Hyde Park. JFRD said the fire originated in a bedroom inside one of the apartments. The fire quickly spread to the attic, and as a result of that, JFRD told me they told JEA to cut the power off for the entire building. The state fire marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire. Without hesitating, Rainey said he ran inside the burning building and began banging on residents' doors, telling them it was time to go. 'I was trying to kick people's doors in, burglary style, but it wasn't flying open,' said Rainey. 'And the doors that I didn't get opened, kicked in, it was people actually in those apartments, too.' [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Rainey tells me he helped get 15 people and 3 dogs out of the burning building, including an elderly woman in a wheelchair. 'I was knocking on their door. It wouldn't open; I opened the door. She was sitting in the living room. Her husband was trying to get her out. And I just grabbed him. I said 'Move, man. I got her, I got her,' said Rainey. 'I grabbed her and rolled her out. And that's how she got out there.' I asked Rainey why he decided to run into that building. He said it was instinct. 'I just care about people. I was just helping everybody. I couldn't leave them in there. The building was shooting fire, like real big flames,' said Rainey. Rainey told me everyone he helped was extremely grateful to him, and he was just happy that everyone was safe. The Red Cross said it assisted a total of 34 individuals displaced by this fire. In addition, there are also other people displaced. Jackson was on her way back home from work on Wednesday when she got a call telling her apartment building was on fire and she needed to evacuate. 'When I walked up, I just see this black apartment complex,' said Jackson. 'I just moved in literally I haven't been here for not even a month yet. And everything I work hard for is ruined.' I spoke with Riverbank Apartment's Property Manager about what they are doing to help residents during this time. They told me everyone who was impacted by the fire can access their units, but they need to obtain an access pass through the city, which they have available if residents contact them. Inmate dies at Jacksonville hospital before making it to Duval County Jail, police say
An inmate died at a hospital while in police custody before he made it to the Duval County Jail, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said. Adam Christopher Torrens, 59, was arrested on May 17 in Clay County on a violation of probation warrant out of Duval County, JSO said. JSO said Torrens' violation of probation stemmed from his local arrest on February 18, for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (domestic). While in Clay County Sheriff's Office custody, Torrens was being treated at a hospital in Clay County. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] On May 19, Torrens was transferred into JSO custody and taken directly to a Jacksonville hospital, JSO said. Torrens remained at the Jacksonville hospital until Tuesday, when he died. St. Johns County Commissioners discuss proposed e-bike ordinance
St. Johns County leaders are considering how to regulate e-bikes in the county after two middle school students were hurt in separate e-bike crashes. Attorney Rich Komando presented his proposed draft ordinance to county commissioners. But the county leaders had more questions about some of the items in the draft proposal. The amended e-bike ordinance would do some things like: Ban people younger than 14 from riding the e-bikes Require those under 18 to wear helmets when operating the e-bikes And require e-bikes to go no more than 10 mph on a sidewalk Some of the Commissioners argued that some points of the proposed draft items, like wearing a helmet while operating the bikes, are already law by state statute, though. 'I don't think having a draft for e-bikes is a bad thing, but what I would love to do is workshops,' Commissioner Clay Murphy said. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Murphy and some other county leaders on the board said that they would rather see more education around the e-bikes instead of more redundant laws. Other leaders like Commissioner Sarah Arnold believe that a draft ordinance would do no good without the accountability and collaboration of parents. 'It does come to being a parenting issue. And as a parent of four, I can say that. And when my kids screw up on their motorized vehicles they lose the keys,' she said.
