Gaza famine death toll rises to 227, including 103 children
"The Gaza Ministry of Health has recorded five deaths from starvation and malnutrition in the past 24 hours, including two children.
"This brings the total number of deaths from starvation to 227, including 103 children," the statement read.
According to data from Gaza authorities, 173 people have died of starvation in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of 2025, 50 in 2024, and four more a year earlier.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said last Monday that Israel's denial of food to the civilians in Gaza may constitute a crime against humanity, calling the images of people starving in Gaza "heart-rending and intolerable."
Israel continues to severely restrict humanitarian assistance from entering Gaza, and the amount of aid allowed to go in falls far short of what is needed, Turk said.
After partially resuming humanitarian aid deliveries to Palestinians from July 27 to August 10, Israel allowed 1,334 trucks to enter the semi-enclave, which covers no more than 14 per cent of the population's aid needs.
Most of the trucks are looted with the connivance of the Israeli military, according to local authorities.
To adequately address the basic requirements for food, fuel, and medicines, at least 600 trucks should be allowed into Gaza daily, they estimated.

Gaza's daily toll tripled as health system collapses
GAZA CITY/ISTANBUL: Medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said on Saturday that the number of injured Palestinians by Israeli fire in Gaza has tripled since late May, as the territory's shattered health system struggles to cope, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. MSF's deputy medical coordinator in Gaza, Mohammed Abu Mughaisib, said in a video message that food distribution centres set up under an Israeli- and US-backed body known as the Gaza Relief Organisation have turned into "areas of death" rather than safe points for civilians. "What remains of the health sector is only a fragile skeleton, and now it faces a new horror," he said, warning that many of the wounded never make it to hospitals alive. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, nearly 1,924 people have been killed and more than 14,000 injured while waiting for aid at such sites since May 27, when the Israeli-run scheme began. Abu Mughaisib described scenes of crushed bones, amputated limbs, torn arteries and severe infections, stressing that emergency surgery and intensive care, both already decimated by months of war, are collapsing in the few hospitals still functioning. He called for an immediate ceasefire and unfettered humanitarian access, saying without them "there will be nothing left to save, neither hospitals, nor patients, nor the future." Israel has killed 61,900 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

2nd measles death reported in Israel amid surging cases
JERUSALEM, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- An 18-month-old Israeli boy died of measles on Saturday at Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek Medical Center, marking the second fatality in the country's current measles outbreak, Israel's Health Ministry said in a statement. The toddler was unvaccinated, it noted. The first death, a two-year-old Israeli boy also unvaccinated, took place on Wednesday at Jerusalem's Hadassah Medical Center. Since the outbreak began in early April, 526 measles cases have been confirmed, including 209 active infections, the ministry said, noting that there are 19 hospitalized patients under age six, including a one-year-old girl on ECMO support. The ministry urged parents to ensure that their children are vaccinated according to the national schedule, which includes one dose at 12 months of age and a second one in the first grade. Measles is a highly contagious viral illness marked by fever, nausea, a runny nose, and a rash. In some cases, it can lead to severe and life-threatening complications.
