Conor Coady to Rangers transfer jolted by 'obvious' Leicester boss revelation as Mbuyamba pitch made

Daily Record2 days ago
The push by the Glasgow giants to sign the experienced centre-back has dragged on throughout the summer
Boss Marti Cifuentes admits Leicester City need to cut the size of their squad amid Rangers' interest in Conor Coady.
The defender has been a target at Ibrox all summer and both the Scottish Premiership giants and Coady had been keen to make a deal happen in time for the Champions League qualification double-header against Panathinaikos.
But the England cap remains in training with the Foxes as they prepares for the English Championship campaign after Premier League relegation.
Cifuentes has praised the 32-year-old following his pre-season showings - and has kept Coady as his captain going into the new campaign.
However, Cifuentes told BBC Radio Leicester that cash-strapped City would have to cut their cloth before the end of the window.
The Spaniard said: 'It's very clear we have a lot of players in the squad. Definitely there is a lot of quality, but at the same time we need to understand that we need to trim this squad.
'At the moment we have 32 players which is quite a lot. It's not what I want. Everybody is aware is that the market, there's a lot of weeks until it's closed. A lot of things can happen.
'The important thing in these days is to learn from the players, to understand more what they can give to the team, what they can give to the idea, and take some decisions.
'What I know for sure is that I don't like to work with very big squads.
'I know the Championship and hopefully we're going to do very well in both cup competitions.
"We're going to need enough players to rotate, to make sure everybody's ready during the season. You never know if you're going to have a bad period of injuries.
'At the same time, I'm a big believer that we have a fantastic academy so I want the young guys, even the ones who are not here today, that have a chance to train with us to show themselves, to hopefully have opportunities during the season.
'I think it's pretty obvious some changes will happen during the next weeks.'
Xavier Mbuyamba is also reportedly on Rangers radar as the club search for defensive reinforcements.
The Dutch defender has just helped FC Volendam return to the Eredivisie by winning the second division title.
The 23-year-old - who was previously linked to Celtic back in 2023 - has entered the final year of his deal and is reportedly available for £450k this summer.
And former Volendam star Kees Kwakma is baffled that the centre-back hasn't found a move - as he told suitors exactly what they will be getting.
He told ESPN's Voetbalpraat: "It's striking that Xavier Mbuyamba still hasn't found a club.
"He's a true, pure defender. He's very fit and still very young at 23. He's definitely an investment that can make a difference, so I expect things to move forward."

Hamza Igamane to Feyenoord 'leak' sparks Robin van Persie rage with Rangers alert to Lille confession

The boss in Rotterdam has been left irked by the murmurs over deals escaping the Feyenoord inner circle Rangers striker Hamza Igamane is on Feyenoord's shopping list - but the latest set of transfer murmurs around the Dutch giants has resulted in fury from boss Robin van Persie. ‌ ‌ The Scottish Premiership side have stood firm on their £15million valuation of the 22-year-old so far this summer amid ongoing interest from Lille - with Everton, Stade Rennes and Udinese also among the clubs on alert to a deal this summer. ‌ The Moroccan international has already agreed personal terms over a move but talks are deadlocked over the valuation of the Ibrox chiefs just a year on from his £1.7m move from AS FAR. But amid fears over a leak inside the Feyenoord camp after interest in Igamane and losing out on the signing of Valentin Gomez to Real Betis, the former Manchester United and Arsenal striker told VI: "What I personally find annoying, and I want to express this, is that quite a lot of things leak at Feyenoord. "I really hope Feyenoord supporters realise this; it hinders potential transfers. Because it simply hinders potential transfers. "That's happened several times now. I'm not saying that every scoop is spot on, because sometimes they're wrong, but it doesn't help the club. "That makes the job very difficult for Dennis te Kloese (technical director) for example. ‌ "Suppose we're working on a transfer together, and it leaks out too early, then the Feyenoord supporters who leak it have to take into account that this will have a negative impact on a potential transfer for their club. "That's something I think I hope we'll start thinking about more together. It's a very frustrating factor and it also hinders the process. Sometimes we just need a few days for things to calm down." The interest from the Netherlands comes with Lille playing a waiting game - with president Olivier Letang previously insisting the club were in no rush to deal done. ‌ And the bullish supremo has now moved to claim that the club are cash-rich at this stage - and have no need to sell their stars. He told La Voix Du Nord:"Even if nearly €25 million in revenue has vanished in the space of two years from TV we're in a good position. "We're probably going to have the fourth year in a row where we've had the best economic performance, while maintaining sporting momentum ‌ "It would take exceptional circumstances for one or two players to leave us; there won't be a fire sale, there's no open door at all. Our best marketing tool is to win matches, and the goal is for the team to remain as competitive as possible." Igamane was missing from the match day squad in the pre-season friendly clash with Middlesbrough after picking up a knock in Tuesday's 2-0 first leg victory over Panathinaikos. But boss Russell Martin is hopeful he will win the fitness race for the return fixture in Athens: "Hamza picked up a little injury on Tuesday night. "He missed a lot of pre-season, and he's been really trying hard to catch up fitness wise. 'He's got himself to a good place and then the other night, the intensity of the game coming on to that is not easy, but he's not going to be out for a long time. He's a big, strong boy and we hope to have him back on Wednesday night."

Only Celtic switch up for Rangers Champions League congestion can soothe Premier Sports Cup fixture headache

Both of the big two being handed home ties against Falkirk and Alloa severely limits the options of then ties can be played Both Celtic and Rangers being handed home draws has given the SPFL a fixture headache. ‌ Both entered the League Cup at the second round stage along with the other European qualifiers from the Premiership. ‌ But it's the big two's Champions League qualifiers that could throw a spanner in the domestic works in terms of both playing in Glasgow on the same weekend. ‌ Holders Celtic are at home to top flight new boys Falkirk while Russell Martin's side host Alloa Athletic at Ibrox on the weekend of August 16/17. Gers take a 2-0 Champions League second round qualifying first leg lead to Athens this week, looking to finish the job against Panathinaikos. Do so, and they will face either Servette or Viktoria Plzen in the third qualifying round. It's not unthinkable that they will book a spot in the playoff round alongside their city rivals, leaving both 180 minutes away from the lucrative league phase. The first legs of those ties will be played on Tuesday August 19 and Wednesday 20, with the Premier Sports Cup fixtures being played the weekend prior. That's still a while away, but it won't be known if Rangers make it before the TV picks for the domestic cup clashes are made. ‌ That rules out the Sunday with at least one of them set to play on the Tuesday, and assuming Police Scotland don't go for staggered kick-offs on Saturday August 16, then the most obvious solution at this stage looks like Celtic hosting the Bairns on Friday 15. There is a precedent for both to kick-off on their own respective patches at the same time, however. July 2022 saw the Light Blues host Tottenham Hotspur in the friendly while Norwich City were across town at Celtic Park. ‌ Both games kicked off at 3pm on the same day in the same city - which was the first time that had happened since January 1999. Just under 38,000 watched Rangers beat Stenhousemuir 2-0 in the Scottish Cup while over 42,000 were at Parkhead to see the Hoops see off Airdrie 3-1. Luis Diaz set for 75m euro move to Bayern Munich as Liverpool accept latest bid

Liverpool have agreed a 75 million euro deal with Bayern Munich for Reds forward Luis Diaz, the PA news agency understands. The agreement comes after the Bundesliga champions were understood to have reopened dialogue regarding a move after having an initial offer of 67.5 million euros (£59m) dismissed last week. Liverpool are currently on their pre-season tour in Asia and Diaz was still with the team when they arrived in Tokyo on Sunday, but now has permission to leave. The 28-year-old has two years left on his original contract and it is understood the Reds accepted the bid for what they consider to be his market value. Diaz joined Liverpool in January 2022 and made 50 appearances in all competitions last season – scoring 17 goals – as he helped the team clinch the Premier League title. His time on Merseyside also saw him lift the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups. Diaz was left out of Liverpool's 4-2 friendly defeat by AC Milan in Hong Kong on Saturday as speculation surrounding his future continued to mount. Speaking post-match, head coach Arne Slot said: 'In Lucho's (Diaz's) situation, there's a lot of rumours around him lately and I cannot go into that. 'He's training really well with us but we have decided for now not to play him yet. 'I'm used to talking to most of my players on a regular basis. I cannot comment much more about that.' Liverpool have been busy in the transfer window so far and have bolstered their attacking options with Florian Wirtz – who made his first start as a false nine on Saturday – and Hugo Ekitike joining the club. There have also been further arrivals on Merseyside, with Jeremie Frimpong, left-back Milos Kerkez and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili all signing and the trio played in the second half of Saturday's friendly.
