Labourer gets 4 years' jail for kidnapping child, stealing car
PETALING JAYA : A labourer was sentenced to three years' imprisonment by the Butterworth magistrates' court after pleading guilty to kidnapping a five-year-old autistic child last month.
He was also ordered to serve an additional year in jail after pleading guilty to stealing a car.
Utusan Malaysia reported that magistrate Aini Adilah Faizal ordered Jasri Ismail, 36, to serve the sentences from the date of his arrest on March 31.
Jasri was accused of kidnapping Hadif Mone Nazrul from the care of his father Nazrul Nor, 42, at the parking area of Kampung Banggol Pokok Sena Mosque in Kepala Batas at 8.20pm on March 30.
Jasri had driven off with the boy in Nazrul's car, a grey Honda BR-V.
He was charged with kidnapping under Section 363 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to seven years' imprisonment and a fine if convicted.
His lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation requested the minimum prison sentence, saying Jasri was earning RM1,800 a month as a labourer and was supporting his 75-year-old mother.
However, deputy public prosecutor Siti Marissa Safina Saiful Adli pressed for a deterrent sentence due to the severity of the offence.
She also said Jasri had hurt the boy as there were injury marks on his body.
'This happened on the eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri when the child was supposed to be spending time with his family.
'The boy was also slightly injured in the incident. As such, we ask for an appropriate sentence,' she told the court.

Unemployed man gets death penalty for murder of 3-year-old in Langkawi
KUALA LUMPUR: The Alor Setar High Court has sentenced a 44-year-old unemployed man to death for the murder of a three-year-old girl in Langkawi six years ago. Ramlan Abdul Rashid was found guilty of killing Nur Aisyah Aleya Abdullah at a hospital staff quarters between 9 am and 10 am on Feb 23, 2019, under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Justice Evawani Farisyta Mohammad, in her written judgment published on the judiciary's website on July 31, stated that the victim died from prolonged physical abuse. The court noted the accused showed no remorse and callously disposed of the child's body in a forested area at Gunung Raya without proper burial rites. Forensic evidence confirmed the skull and two teeth found at the scene belonged to the victim. The judge emphasized that the accused, entrusted with the child's care, failed in his duty to protect her. The victim's mother had left her daughter in Ramlan's care while working at a food stall. In January 2019, she moved to a hostel, leaving the child with the accused. A month later, she reported her daughter missing after failing to locate her during a visit. Ramlan initially claimed he handed the girl to another person but refused to disclose details. Police later discovered the remains in March 2019. Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Rizal Fadzil led the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer Ai Cha Ran. - Bernama
