Humber Bridge tolls to go up later this year as new fees revealed
Tolls to cross the Humber Bridge will increase later this year, the bridge board has announced.Drivers without an account will see the fee for a car rise from £1.50 to £2 with the cost for vans increasing to £5 and £15 for HGVs.Those with an automatic payment HumberTag account will see prices increase from £1.35 to £1.50 for cars, with vans paying £4 and HGVs £12.The bridge's chief executive Andrew Arundel said the increase would go towards "ongoing maintenance".
"Despite significant increases in the cost of operating and maintaining the bridge, the toll has remained frozen since 2012," Mr Arundel added.Motorcycles will continue to cross for free and the concession scheme for drivers with disabilities will continue. The Stroud Hotel holds Berni Inn night to mark 1970s heyday
An historic hotel is celebrating its delayed reopening by holding a "Berni Inn night" on Friday - an event named after the famous steakhouse chain - to mark its 1970s Stroud, formally known as The Imperial Hotel, in its namesake town in Gloucestershire, only reopened earlier this year after redevelopment was delayed when the building was awarded Grade II listed status, by Queen Elizabeth II in protection added £1million to the renovation costs and delayed the reopening by several months. Laurence Saffer, one of the hotel's partners, said that the costs were worth it to properly preserve the "iconic" building. "In lockdown, we came across this building and we found out the Beatles had visited here when they were performing, and Her Majesty the Queen visited us in 1950."It was a great honour (to receive listed status), and it's something that we really do cherish," he added."It put us back about six months and at considerable cost, but we're really proud of what we've done - something that's got a heartbeat."There's a lot of life in this area and we thought that creating something which is warm and people want to go to would be a great idea." Local resident Kate Yates said she was excited to attend the 1970s throwback event having had her wedding reception at the venue in 1978."It was new, it was exciting. There weren't really many other places to eat," she said."I think we had orange juice to start. Then we had steak, and black forest gateau."I can't wait to try it again. We have done it at home to show them to my children what we used to have."My daughter has come in with me this evening to experience it too."

New cabin baggage rules on the cards
The European Parliament 's transport and tourism committee has voted to mandate airlines to allow passengers two pieces of cabin baggage, a personal item and small hand luggage, without additional fees. This initiative aims to prevent budget airlines from imposing "unjustified extra costs" on travellers who currently face charges for larger cabin bags or are limited to one small personal item. Budget airlines, including Wizz Air and Ryanair, oppose the proposal, arguing it would increase costs for millions, slow down boarding processes, and undermine their low-cost operational models due to limited aircraft space. The proposal will proceed to a full vote by the European Parliament, followed by "trilogue" negotiations involving the Council and Commission, indicating a lengthy process before potential implementation.
