Somalia celebrates 65th Independence Day
On 3 July, the Embassy of Somalia commemorated its 65th anniversary of independence as well as the inauguration of the new chancery in Pretoria. Back in 1960, on 26 June, the Northern Region gained independence from British rule, and on 1 July of the same year, the Southern Region achieved independence from the Italian colonial administration, culminating in the birth of modern Somalia.
Freedom is a cornerstone of Somalis' identity, enabling them to express themselves, pursue prosperity and uphold justice.
Somalia's ambassador to South Africa, HE Mohamed Sheikh Issak, remarked on the long-standing relationship between Somalia and South Africa that dates back to the apartheid era. Formal diplomatic ties were established in 2012 and the embassy in Pretoria was inaugurated in 2013.
A bilateral agreement was signed in September 2023 on general cooperation, paving the way for collaboration in key sectors such as agriculture and the ocean economy.
HE Issak said: 'Let us reaffirm our commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties, fostering economic partnerships and promoting cultural exchanges between Somalia and South Africa.'
The minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation of Somalia, HE Abdisalam Abdi Ali, who travelled a day earlier to officiate the opening ceremony of the new embassy, thanked South Africa for the warm hospitality and unwavering support of the Somali community. 'South Africa's commitment to regional stability and economic prosperity is commendable, and Somalia stands ready to deepen our engagement and expand our areas of collaboration.'
He said that through its seat at the United Nations Security Council, Somalia is committed to representing African and Arab collective interests. These include advocating for peace, security and sustainable development, while ensuring that African and Arab voices are heard in addressing global problems.
In closing HE Ali said: 'Thank you, South Africa, for your friendship. Thank you Somalia, for your courage. May our nations continue to build a future of shared prosperity and lasting peace.'
South Africa's Deputy Minister Narend Singh, of the department of forestry, fisheries and the environment, congratulated Somalia on its Independence Day, stating that South Africa is proud of the cordial bilateral relations between the two nations.
'The Somali diaspora in South Africa has been a vibrant force across the country, contributing to this great nation's cultural and economic tapestry.'
The deputy minister went on to say that South Africa remains concerned about the continuing violence and loss of life in Somalia. South Africa takes cognisance of the significant strides made by the African Union in terms of peace and security efforts in Somalia through various AU missions, he noted.
'We reiterate our view that lasting peace in Somalia can only be realised through negotiations,' he said.
Deputy Minister Singh wished the government and people of Somalia a happy Independence Day, good health and prosperity.

The police crime intelligence division is investigating allegations of Basotho nationals undergoing military-style training on South African farms to reclaim land 'stolen' from the mountain kingdom. This comes after Lesotho police chief advocate Borotho Matsoso is reported to have confirmed the emergence of a group calling itself 'Malata Naha' which is allegedly recruiting Basotho youth from within the country and abroad to incite insurrection against their government and to fight for the contentious land in South Africa. The land being claimed includes parts of the Free State, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Matsoso's comments come after the recent arrest of Lesotho MP Dr Tshepo Lipholo, leader of the Basotho Covenant Movement, a political party which has been demanding the return of Lesotho's 'stolen land'. The arrest sparked unrest in the country. On Saturday, national commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola said Matsoso's allegations were high on the agenda of a meeting with all nine provincial commissioners to discuss crime combating efforts in the country. 'A preliminary report from the crime intelligence division was discussed in which intelligence structures have highlighted that they have heightened their operations to investigate allegations made and where necessary, track down and take down such illegal activities. 'The DPCI, also known as the Hawks crimes against the state (CATS) unit has also been roped in to investigate. Various searches have been undertaken by CATS at various identified farms and no such evidence has been found to date.' Masemola said he reached out to Matsoso to discuss the allegations and they had agreed that both countries' law enforcement agencies' intelligence structures would investigate the existence of such camps. Masemola said intelligence structures and operatives were on the ground to establish facts and urged South Africans not to panic as police from both countries were on high alert. In 2023, Lipholo tabled a motion for the kingdom to reclaim South African territory that purportedly belonged to Lesotho in precolonial days. Kenny Kunene resigns as Joburg councillor and transport MMC
Suspended Patriotic Alliance deputy and City of Johannesburg MMC for transport Kenny Kunene has resigned as a councillor with immediate effect. Kunene's resignation comes after police found him at the Sandton house of murder accused Katiso 'KT' Molefe on Tuesday. Kunene told media outlets he was at the house when police arrived to arrest Molefe because he was facilitating an interview with a newsmaker for journalists from his online news platform. On Friday, PA leader Gayton McKenzie served his deputy with a suspension letter pending an investigation into allegations against him. Molefe is accused of being the mastermind who ordered the hits on DJ Sumbody and Armand Swart, a Vereeniging engineer killed after his company allegedly flagged price gouging in a Transnet tender. In a letter to City of Johannesburg speaker on Friday Kunene said: 'I regret to inform you that I have tendered my resignation as a proportional representation councillor for the PA effective immediately and will thus be unable to continue as a member of your mayoral committee responsible for transport'. 'I am stepping aside from public life for a period, while my party satisfies itself as to certain allegations that have been raised against me, which are unfounded. But I have nevertheless agreed it would be in the public interest for me to await the clearing of my name before considering a return to public service and duty.' Earlier in the week McKenzie said: 'I believe Kenny 100%. I can't expect everyone to believe him, hence we are launching a full investigation to prove what we know, which is that he is innocent,' McKenzie said. The DA responded to Kunene's resignation with renewed calls for an investigation into processes, organisations and projects under his portfolio. DA caucus leader Belinda Kayer Echeozonjoku said the party wrote to m ayor Dada Morero demanding Kunene's removal. Kenny Kunene steps away from Joburg and PA roles
Suspended Patriotic Allianc deputy president Kenny Kunene. (X) Suspended Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president Kenny Kunene has resigned from his roles in the City of Johannesburg. His resignation follows his official suspension from the PA pending an investigation into his relationship with murder-accused Katiso 'TK' Molefe, who was this week arrested for allegedly orchestrating Oupa Sefoka (DJ Sumbody's) murder in 2022. Kunene has agreed to 'cooperate with an investigation' and will step aside from his political role in the Patriotic Alliance until he is cleared of the allegations. He will also not act and work in any official capacity in the party while on suspension, its leader Gayton McKenzie said in a statement. Kunene tendered his resignation as Proportional Representation Councillor and transport MMC in the city of Johannesburg with immediate effect. 'I am stepping aside from public life, for a period, while my party satisfies itself to certain allegations that have been raised against me, which are unfounded, but I have nevertheless agreed it would be in the public interest for me to await the clearing of my name before considering a return to public service and duty,' Kunene said in a statement. This week, Kunene, who also owns the online publication African News Global, said the purpose of his visit to Molefe's property was to facilitate an exclusive interview on various topics for one of his journalists. He added that he only knew Molefe from a distance. Molefe was arrested for allegedly orchestrating DJ Sumbody's murder in 2022, and he was also on R100 000 bail for another murder case at the time of his arrest. The Democratic Alliance, which has been critical of the Patriotic Alliance following these recent revelations, said it notes Kunene's resignation, but demands investigations into the projects that Kunene was overseeing. These include a full investigation into all contracts and procurement processes at the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), a full investigation into the contractors and procurement of the Lilian Ngoyi street repairs and a full investigation into contracts, appointments and procurement processes at the Metropolitan Trading Company (MTC). 'Should the executive mayor fail to respond to the DA within seven days, the DA will use all avenues at our disposal, including approaching law enforcement with the information available to us, to hold the executive mayor as shareholder representative himself responsible for the alleged irregularities at JRA and MTC,' the party's Johannesburg caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku said in a statement.
