Games Publisher Kepler On Cloud Nine After Smash Hits
Games publisher Kepler Interactive has notched up two of the breakout titles of the year with "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" and "Rematch", reaping the rewards for developing independent projects on tight budgets. "It's almost impossible to predict a success like 'Expedition 33'," Kepler chief Alexis Garavaryan told AFP ahead of the Gamescom trade show in the German city of Cologne this week, where he will be on the lookout for future hits. Developed by a small French studio, the role-playing title with its Belle Epoque style setting has notched up glowing reviews, four million sales and a message of congratulations from President Emmanuel Macron. The response crowned four years of hard work for Kepler, founded by seven independent studios with a $120 million investment from Chinese tech giant NetEase in 2021. Garvaryan believes Kepler's unusual structure -- each studio is a part owner -- allows for better decision-making as developers who have already had several hit games have input into the group's direction. Based in London with around 50 employees, Kepler also publishes games from studios that do not belong to the group. Unlike most publishers, it does not demand a high level of control over production of the games in its stable. Kepler "never forces a decision on the teams", Garavaryan said. "We're just there to guide them and help them along, not to interfere," he said. That promise of creative freedom encouraged the team behind "Expedition 33" to sign up with Kepler, rather than one of their other publishing suitors. "We liked their vision, the aspect of a publisher set up by developers who know what it's like being a studio," said Francois Meurisse, co-founder of creators Sandfall. Kepler enlisted star actors like Andy Serkis and Charlie Cox to lend their voices to characters, and struck a deal with Microsoft to add "Expedition 33" to its Gamepass subscription service as soon as the title was released. "We're very selective: we look at 1,400 projects per year on average and only sign up two or three," Garavaryan said. He added that projects with "restrained budgets" but "sufficiently strong visual rendition and innovative game mechanics" were Kepler's unique selling point. French studio Sloclap, Kepler's biggest member with 135 staff, applied that formula for the hit football game "Rematch" that reached five million players in just one month. Sloclap chief Pierre de Margerie said that they shared with "Expedition 33" both "an original proposal and quality execution". "The creative freedom we have is also tied to the fact that we don't need to sell five or 15 million copies to turn a profit," he added. Compared with so-called "AAA" blockbusters, whose development costs can run into the hundreds of millions, Kepler's titles are "more sustainable, more lean," said Rhys Elliott of gaming data firm Alinea Analytics. The production style "is going to be a real test case for the rest of the industry", he added. Now grown to nine member studios with the addition of outfits Tactical Adventures and The Gentlebros, Kepler has "no expansion plans" for now. Garavaryan called the strategy "reassuring" after "all of the excesses there have been in our industry over the past few years".

Paul Pogba's return to Monaco this summer set tongues wagging as the 2018 World Cup winner made his comeback to football after nearly three seasons on the sidelines -- a turbulent period blighted by injury, blackmail and an 18-month doping ban. Now with the 2025-26 Ligue 1 season looming large, the former Manchester United star must put all that behind him and get to work if he is to light up Monaco's Stade Louis II and realise his "dream" of winning back his spot in the France national team. "It's the wish of every French football player to represent the France national team, but there are stages," Pogba said during his unveiling at Monaco in July. "Today I'm at stage one: coming back and performing well." Pogba's words attracted attention for what he could still offer on the field, but it was his tears of joy that really grabbed the spotlight. Images of the 32-year-old weeping as he signed a two-year contract with Monaco went viral on social media -- thus setting the tone for a very different type of graft. The arrival of the midfielder at Monaco represented more than just the return of a star name of French football to Ligue 1, it was clearly a marketing opportunity too good to pass up. Pogba was sent straight to work. First, he joined Zinedine Zidane for a video produced by their mutual sponsor, which garnered huge attention. Then, he took a trip to Saint Tropez with American influencer Darren Watkins Junior, who has 40 million followers under the name IShowSpeed. After that, he and his wife, Zulay, launched their new high-end jewellery brand, accompanied by a suitable social media campaign. Named 'Unbreakable', the jewellery collection is a direct nod to Pogba's recent travails. He was the victim in March 2022 of an attempt to extort 13 million euros ($15.1 million) from him by relatives, including his brother Mathias who was sentenced to three years in prison, with two years suspended, in 2024. Pogba was also injured for a long period and then suspended for 18 months after failing a drugs test while at Italian club Juventus in August 2023. Since having his contract terminated by the Serie A outfit last November, Pogba had been living in the United States and training alone until Monaco came calling and offered him the chance to make his comeback. "A lot of boxes were ticked: the conditions, the lifestyle, France, Ligue 1, the family, and of course the club," explained Pogba, who will be playing club football in his home country for the first time in his professional career. Once back in a professional environment at Monaco, "the easy part was just beginning" for Pogba. If the exquisitely gifted ball-player was less worried about getting his touch back, rediscovering the fitness and intensity of an elite athlete would be more challenging. A month later, Pogba has moved on to the second phase of his programme: individualised work on the pitch, often with the ball. "I'm determined," he said on his arrival. "I want to get back on the pitch. But it will take as long as it takes." "Everything is going in the right direction," Monaco general manager Thiago Scuro told AFP. "He has started sessions on the pitch and is making progress. The timing is on track, the process is positive, with no red flags or setbacks so far." Pogba's progress is been closely monitored by Monaco coach Adi Huetter, who so far is impressed by his commitment and how quickly he has integrated into a squad in which he is the elder statesman. For Scuro the key moment will be "when (Pogba) is able to participate in all training sessions with the group". "The intensity, pressure and level are very high. He will have to be able to repeat this training load on a daily basis. We will then see how his body adapts." Should all go to plan, Pogba could return to competition in the autumn -- perhaps even in time for the home match against fierce rivals Nice on October 5. "We really want to see him succeed," said Scuro. "It's going to be a great story. The most special thing would be to see him play in the World Cup (in 2026). That would mean he's done a lot of good things in Monaco." Child Dies In Italy As European Heatwave Sets Records And Sparks Wildfires
A young boy died of heatstroke in Italy while wildfires threatened a UNESCO site in Spain and French cites saw record temperatures, as a heatwave baked Europe on Monday. The four-year-old Romanian boy died days after being found unconscious in the family's car in Sardinia. The boy was airlifted to a Rome hospital but died of irreversible brain damage, the hospital told AFP on Monday. The news came as Italy's health ministry issued a red alert warning for seven major cities, including Bologna and Florence. Some 11 Italian cities are on red alert for Tuesday, and 16 cities on Wednesday, while around 190 firefighters and the army continue to tackle a wildfire on Mount Vesuvius that caused the closure of the national park to tourists. Wildfires damaged a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site in northwestern Spain and forced evacuations in three Balkan countries as high temperatures fanned by strong winds left parts of Europe in flames. Spanish firefighters struggled to contain a wildfire that damaged a Roman-era mining site in Las Medulas and prompted hundreds of residents to evacuate. High temperatures and winds of up to 40 kilometres per hour (25 mph) created "many difficulties", said Juan Carlos Suarez-Quinones, the Castile and Leon regional environment minister. "We will not allow people to return until safety in their communities is absolutely guaranteed," he told reporters, estimating that about 700 people had been displaced. Four people, including two firefighters, suffered minor injuries, he added. The blaze broke out on Sunday near Las Medulas, an area famed for its striking red landscape. Spain has been in the grip of a heatwave for the past week, with temperatures nearing 40C in many areas and fuelling wildfires. Castile and Leon alone has seen 13 fires in the past three days, according to Suarez-Quinones, who said that some were believed to have been deliberately started. In neighbouring Portugal, firefighters were battling three large wildfires in the centre and north of the country. People were evacuated from dozens of homes in the Balkans as firefighters battled blazes in Albania, Montenegro and Croatia, where red alerts were announced. In Albania, hundreds of firefighters and soldiers had subdued most of the nearly 40 fires that flared up in the last 24 hours, according to the defence ministry, but more than a dozen were still active. Fires continued to burn in the southern coastal area of Finiq, around 160 kilometres south of the capital, where about 10 people were evacuated and several homes were razed on Sunday night, according to local media. Since the start of July, nearly 34,000 hectares (84,000 acres) have been scorched nationwide, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). Police allege that many of the blazes were deliberately lit, with more than 20 people arrested in recent weeks. Just outside the capital of neighbouring Montenegro, where temperatures soared to 40C, fire crews managed to save dozens of homes when a blaze broke out in inaccessible terrain on Monday, the commander of the Protection and Rescue Service, Nikola Bojanovic, told media. In Croatia, around 150 firefighters also spent the night defending homes from a blaze near the port city of Split. In the northwestern Turkish province of Canakkale, more than 2,000 people were evacuated and 77 people received hospital treatment for smoke inhalation after several fires broke out around the tourist village of Guzelyali, authorities said. Several homes and cars caught ablaze, according to images shown on Turkish media, while more than 760 firefighters, 10 aeroplanes, nine helicopters and more than 200 vehicles were deployed to battle the flames. Turkey had just experienced its hottest July since records began 55 years ago. Temperature records were broken in at least four weather stations in southern France, as the government called for vigilance. The southwestern city of Bordeaux hit a record 41.6C while all-time records were also broken at meteorological stations in Bergerac, Cognac and Saint Girons, according to the national weather service, Meteo France. The heatwave, the country's second this summer, began on Friday and was forecast to last possibly until August 19 or 20. On Monday, 12 French departments were placed on red alert, the country's highest heat warning, with four more expected on Tuesday.
